North Carolina vs Duke Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

Can the Blue Devils really get the O going enough to push through an embattled North Carolina D?

Duke has been almost perfectly balanced throughout the first four games – it would’ve and should’ve been 4-0 if it didn’t screw up and give away the opener against Charlotte. There’s a chance the Blue Devils might just have the better offense.

Georgia Tech was all but unstoppable when QB Jeff Sims stepped in and ripped through the Tar Heels in a stunning 45-22 win. Duke has to take charge in the same way, and it has the running game to do it.

North Carolina has a problem with turnovers, and its line isn’t giving Sam Howell any time to work, but it’s that defense that couldn’t get off the field last week that’s the real problem. However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why North Carolina Will Win

Mr. Howell is rolling.

He’s been beaten up and battered, but he has also thrown for close to 1,000 yards in the last three games with ten touchdown passes. The passing game has worked just fine, but can the defense hold serve enough to get by?

The D hasn’t been that awful.

Virginia is bombing away on everyone – the Tar Heels beat the Cavaliers despite giving up 553 passing yards – and Georgia Tech just had a good day. If Howell is on, the Tar Heel passing game will take over.

But …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Howell hasn’t actually been all that amazing in his two games against Duke. North Carolina won both of them, but he didn’t bomb away and he had the worst game of his career in the 20-17 win in 2019.

Yeah, Duke is the 3-1 team in this and North Carolina is reeling, but it’s a little misleading. The Blue Devils beat North Carolina A&T, Northwestern, and Kansas – and they couldn’t handle the passing game in the second half of either game.

The North Carolina offense will go off.

Kansas vs Duke Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks have to come up with takeaways – and score off of them.

They’re +2 in turnover margin on the year with just one giveaway, and they took the ball away twice against Baylor, and it didn’t really matter.

Duke gave away the Charlotte game because of two fumbles – that’s a little overblown, but not much – and did its best to hand Northwestern a comeback with three turnovers. The five takeaways against the Wildcats saved the day.

Kansas has a wee bit of a passing game and could get hot for moments, and again, it has to capitalize on ANY opening. However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Duke Will Win

The Kansas offense wasn’t doing a whole lot anyway, but it sure didn’t help to lose RB Velton Gardner. He only averaged 1.9 yards per carry, but it would’ve been nice to figure out how to use 2020’s leading rusher a bit more.

The Jayhawks can’t find anything that consistently works offensive – it doesn’t have a positive identity. On the other side, the run defense is getting worse each week, and now it gets a running attack that hit the 200-yard mark in two of the first three games.

Duke will hit 200 yards on the ground in this.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The problem with Kansas is that it’s not improving enough. The defense wasn’t totally miserable against Coastal Carolina, and then it got rocked by Baylor.

The offense has a decent QB in Jason bean, but he’s not getting enough help.

Duke can certainly biff this if it somehow screws up time and again like it did agains Charlotte, but the running game will take over early and Kansas will sputter out on drive after drive.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Northwestern (1-1) vs Duke (1-1) Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

It’s been a grind, but the Wildcats have to hope they have the running game going again.

They didn’t exactly turn it loose in the 24-6 win over Indiana State, but at least the ground attack was able to work after doing nothing in the loss to Michigan State.

Transfers and injuries gutted the running back corps, but Evan Hull was able to rumble for 126 yards and two touchdowns behind a line that came up with a decent game.

Duke has done absolutely nothing to control the clock. The D can’t get off the field, there’s no pass rush, and the team is the third-worst in the nation in time of possession. Northwestern will happily hang on to the ball for 40 minutes if it can.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Duke Will Win

It’s not that the offense isn’t working. Rolling through North Carolina A&T is no big deal, but it was a good game just to show a little explosion after getting down early.

The Blue Devils could’ve done more in the choke against Charlotte to open the season, but they found their back in Mateo Durant who do some damage against the Northwestern defensive front.

If they can at least stay even in the turnover battle – only two giveaways so far after a horrible time last year hanging on to the ball – and make Northwestern try to press even a little bit offensively, they should be able to control the tempo.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s the big measuring stick moment for both teams and their respective seasons.

Northwestern was gashed by Michigan State, and it didn’t show much against an FCSer last week. However, slow starts are nothing new to the Wildcats in the Pat Fitzgerald era. This week, though, the defense has to pitch a gem.

Duke has more offensive pop, but it hasn’t faced any sort of a defensive challenge yet. Northwestern isn’t going to run well, but the D will be strong, the O will control the clock, and it’ll be about the tempo as the game grinds on.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Duke (1-0) vs North Carolina A&T (0-1) Game Preview

Why North Carolina A&T Will Win

Wait for it long enough and Duke will screw up.

The Blue Devil defense was hardly special in the 31-28 loss to Charlotte, but a good, tough game should’ve been a Blue Devil win except for all of the big mistakes.

Duke didn’t see a turnover it didn’t like to commit last year, and against the 49ers the two giveaways and -2 turnover margin was a killer.

North Carolina A&T did a decent job against the run in the 29-18 loss to Furman, but …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Duke Will Win

The Aggies might be able to outdo the Blue Devils when it comes to screwing up.

Two giveaways and ten penalties didn’t help as A&T got down in the first half and had to push to catch up late. Yes, the run defense was statistically fine, but that’s partly because the secondary was torched by Furman’s Hamp Simpson.

Duke won’t have any problems throwing the ball, and as long as they don’t totally mess up there shouldn’t be too much drama.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Mataeo Durant keep up the momentum?

The stunning loss to Charlotte overshadowed a massive 255-yard, three-score performance from the Blue Devil running back, and QB Gunnar Holmberg was great, too.

It’s Duke, so there will be at least one giveaway, but the mistakes won’t matter in this.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Duke (0-0) vs Charlotte (0-0) Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

The 49ers might have struggled through the 2020 season – only playing six games – and were rocked by Duke 53-19, but …

This is a better, stronger team that should do a better job of keeping up the pace.

The offense only worked against the two weak teams on the slate – North Texas and UTEP – but the terrific receiving corps should stretch the field and open things up a bit. As long as the veteran O line can give QB Chris Reynolds – who should be in for a strong season after a banged up 2020 – the offense will hit a few big plays.

Duke is all but starting over on the defensive front, but …

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

Why Duke Will Win

The Duke secondary should be experienced enough and good enough to keep the good 49er receivers from going off.

The 2020 Blue Devils were going through a bit of a transition. They went very, very young on the defensive side, and now the linebacking corps should be a strength.

The Duke offense might have sputtered and struggled last year, but it had its best performance of the season against Charlotte. It was also one of the few games the Blue Devils didn’t turn the ball over a gazillion times. As long as there aren’t a ton of bad mistakes, they should be okay.

The passing game doesn’t have to force anything with the receiving corps likely to take over if QB Gunnar Holmberg can get time to operate.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte will be better than it was in last year’s blowout loss.

It won’t have quite enough defensively to create the turnovers needed to pull this off, but it won’t get hit for 274 rushing yards again,

Don’t expect Duke to do anything crazy. Limiting turnovers and consistent offensive production will be its goal in the opener, and it’ll do both. Charlotte will have a few nice drives to keep this from getting out of hand, but Duke will always have an answer.

ACC Preseason Rankings: CFN College Football Preview 2021

The College Football News 2021 ACC preseason rankings along with a quick take on every team.

The College Football News 2021 ACC preseason rankings along with a quick take on every team.

This is NOT a ranking of where the teams are going to finish. This is based on how good we think the ACC teams are going into the 2021 season.

2021 CFN ACC Preseason Rankings: Atlantic

1. Clemson Tigers

Quick Take: If your concern is the inexperience of QB DJ Uiagalelei and a rotation of top-shelf running back talent to overcome the loss of Travis Etienne, you’re going to be okay. The defense is going to be a killer to make up for any and all concerns on the other side.
Clemson Preview | Schedule

2. NC State Wolfpack

Quick Take: This should be among the ACC’s most interesting X factors. The defensive back seven is as strong as any outside of Clemson’s, but the lines on both sides have to terrific. If they are, this is a dangerous team that should do a whole lot of damage.
NC State Preview | Schedule

3. Boston College Eagles

Quick Take: The BC offense was transformed last season and now it should dominate – at least through the air. The ground game is iffy – to be kind – but QB Phil Jurkovec and WR Zay Flowers will put on a show.
BC Preview | Schedule

4. Louisville Cardinals

Quick Take: The defense has talent and experience to be a whole lot better, and Malik Cunningham should be a difference-making veteran quarterback. It’ll be a bounce-back year, but it’ll still be a grind with a tough slate.
Louisville Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532385]

5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Quick Take: You know exactly what you’re getting. The Demon Deacons will never be outcoached, the offense will be fast and fun, and every game will be a shootout. To sound cliché, it’s the type of team that can beat anyone on the right day, but without the high-end talent to take anyone lightly.
Wake Forest Preview | Schedule

6. Florida State Seminoles

Quick Take: Where are the guys? Where are all the superstar FSU NFL prospects? The linebacking corps will be terrific and the ground game should start to work like it’s supposed to under Mike Norvell, but the O is all about the pop and explosion – that might take a bit.
FSU Preview | Schedule

7. Syracuse Orange

Quick Take: It’s just this simple – can the Orange O line block anyone? It hasn’t been able to do that for a few years, but the skill parts are good enough to make some noise if they get a little time to work.
