Sean Paul reveals he is actually saying the name of a cricket legend, not his own, in song intros

Chanderpaul…suh mi give it to…suh mi give it to…

Try to think of any song by Sean Paul. What is he saying in the intro?

Paul is a world-renowned artist, and his hit song “Get Busy” led the Billboard Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks in May 2003. It was a playable song in Dance Dance Revolution Extreme 2. It was featured in the second season of The Wire. Michael Scott dances to a version of it in The Office.

“Get Busy” was an international sensation from the Jamaican Grammy Award-winning artist, and two decades later, it was the subject of a recent feature on VICE. During the interview, he made a shocking reveal.

He was asked about the ubiquitous and recognizable intros to his songs, in which it often sounds like he says his own name with “da” separated between the first and last.

“Sean da Paul” are the official lyrics to “Temperature” on Genius.

But to some, like Caribbean sports journalist Santokie Nagulendran, it actually sounded a bit like he was saying Chanderpaul — the last name of a famous cricket player from Guyana.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, also known as Shiv, is the former captain of the West Indies cricket team. He recently made the International Cricket Council Hall of Fame and he currently coaches the United States women’s national cricket team.

As it turns out, Nagulendran was somehow right all along. Just as he suspected, Paul confirmed to VICE that he was actually saying Chanderpaul (and not Sean da Paul) this whole time.

Curiously, that fact actually makes some sense in the context of the song:

“Di gyaldem Schillaci, Chanderpaul.”

Last year, the rapper told HipHopDX that Schillaci was a reference to the Italian soccer player Salvatore Schillaci. So that means Paul was showing love to two athletes at the top of their respective fields.

This is one of those details simply way too specific to be a lie and way too interesting and fun to not fully embrace.

So next time you’re dancing and singing along to “Temperature” at a party, try and remember it’s not Sean Da Paul suh mi give it to, suh mi give it to. It’s actually Chanderpaul who suh mi give it to.

The biggest lessons to take from the Russian bettors who fell for fake IPL cricket matches

Maybe know a little bit about the league you’re betting on.

Indian farmers nearly made off with $3,800 by faking Indian Premier League cricket matches and getting a few Russian bettors to wager very real money on them. The entire scheme was pretty complex and thought out enough for them to make money, though not enough for them to evade authorities.

Still, the operation made headlines Monday and now stands as a cautionary tale for bettors. You’re a target, and if you aren’t careful, you can be exploited.

We saw it with the recent indictment of a former World Series of Poker bracelet winner in a $25 million sports betting scheme, and we’ll see it again in the future. As long as there are people willing to be reckless with disposable (or maybe not) income, there will always be people willing to go to great lengths to be on the receiving end.

The biggest takeaway from the cricket scheme is that bettors should actually know a little bit about the league and sport they’re betting on. The real league these fake cricket matches were supposedly a part of had ended three weeks prior. Even a casual fan would have known that. But these bettors apparently did not, which means they were betting money on something they had absolutely no clue about. Why would you ever do that?

A quick glance at a schedule or a roster or even a past broadcast would’ve revealed this thing for the fraud it was.

Even acknowledging the possibility that the bettors figured it was fake and just wanted a stake in whatever makeshift thing it was they were watching on YouTube, they couldn’t have known the players on the field were being tipped off in real-time about incoming bets. This is where it helps to have a little autonomy, or at least a licensed sportsbook operator to facilitate your bad bets.

Any way you slice it, putting money on these matches was a bad idea. When sportsbooks promote phone numbers for people with gambling problems to call, this is an example of who they might be talking to. If you’re not informed about the thing it is you want to bet on, then just don’t.

Behold the insanely awesome story of Indian farmers faking cricket matches … and fooling Russians to bet on them

What a wicket story out of India

An absolutely absurd betting scandal has been uncovered in India and we can probably go ahead and start planning the eventual movie now.

It involves a wildly popular cricket league, a fake Telegram channel, nearly pitch-perfect impersonators and a bunch of savvy farmers who might as well have been trained by the crew from Ocean’s 11.

According to Ashish Chauhan in The Times of India, a group of farmers in the Gujarat region were able to put together fake matches for the very real Indian Premier Cricket League. The “players” were given scripts to follow and the whole thing was broadcast on YouTube with commentators who sounded exactly like the IPL’s familiar voices. It all looked real enough that bettors in Russian cities were wagering on the fake action through Telegram channel the scammers set up.

From Chauhan:

All it took for the real-life con caper to be executed were 21 farm labourers and unemployed youths from the village, who took turns wearing jerseys of the Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans. They even did umpiring, flaunting a few walkie-talkies in front of five HD cameras. Crowd-noise sound effects downloaded from the internet made the ambience appear authentic to the audience sitting in Russia.

The ruse amazingly went on for two weeks before anyone who knew better caught on—and the farmers had made it all the way to the “knockout quarterfinals” before it was shut down.

More from Chauhan:

“Chief organiser” Shoeb Davda, who returned to Molipur after working for eight months in a Russian pub famous for taking bets, helped execute the con. “Shoeb hired the farm of Ghulam Masih and installed halogen there. He readied 21 farm labourers, promising them [400 Indian Rupee] per match. Next, he hired cameramen and bought t-shirts of IPL teams,” police official Bhavesh Rathod said.

Shoeb had an accomplice back in Russia who steered bettors towards the fake matches and helped facilitate the wagers. Once Shoeb accepted the action, he would radio the umpires with instructions on what should happen next in the match.

They had just hauled in 300,000 Indian Rupee (equivalent to $3,800 U.S. dollars) when the scheme fell apart.

The scammers were pretty easy to catch since, after all, the real IPL season ended three weeks before they launched their faux league. Police have already arrested four individuals involved.

Maybe they can still get a producer credit when their story inevitably makes it to Hollywood.

Cricket 22 delayed over cover star’s lewd photos

Video games get delayed for a variety of reasons. For Cricket 22, it’s because its cover star sent photos of their private parts.

Video games are often delayed for a variety of reasons. Maybe they’re just not ready, perhaps there’s another big game launching on the same date, or maybe there’s another business reason. For Cricket 22, it’s being delayed because its cover star sent photos of their private parts.

In 2018, Australian cricket captain Tim Paine sent a nude photo and “lewd messages” to a former colleague. An investigation into the incident ruled that the exchanges were “consensual”, but the woman who received the messages lodged a complaint, which sparked a debate about the results of the investigation.

While the incident happened a few years ago now, the scandal has just been brought to the attention of the public. Paine has since stepped down from his role as captain, but he will still play for Australia against England in the Ashes tournament.

Cricket 22 developer Big Ant released a statement about the controversy:

“Hello cricket fans!

We know you’re excited to get your hands on Cricket 22 – The Official Game Of The Ashes.

We’re every bit as keen to get the game to you, as the team has been working incredibly hard to make what we believe is our greatest title yet.

Unfortunately, factors beyond our control have meant that we need to update the game’s cover art, other visuals and team lists. There was a critical day 1 patch that players will need to enjoy the full Cricket 22 experience that has consequently needed to be revoked. The new patch won’t be ready for release until December 2.

As a result, we have made the difficult decision to delay the game’s release by a week for all platforms both physical and digital. This is the first time Big Ant Studios have ever had to delay a game release, but we find ourselves in an unprecedented position. Everyone at Big Ant Studios would like to thank our fans and supporters for understanding our need to do this, ensuring the game is as full and authentic a cricket experience as is possible.

We will update you with further details soon. In the meantime, circle December 2 on the calendar!

We can’t wait to see you out there on the field.

Ross Symons, CEO, and the Big Ant team.”

Pat Cummins will replace Paine as the cover star for Cricket 22

Thanks, Kotaku
