Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The Myrtle Beach Bowl

It might not be exactly how the people who put together the Myrtle Beach Bowl thought this whole thing would start, but this kicks off a speed-round bowl season with an interesting afternoon game that should have a whole lot of high-powered offense.

In a bowl like this, you want lots of O, minimal D – at least that should come from one side – and two teams fired up to be in it. Here you go with the inaugural game.

Appalachian State might not be the powerhouse of previous seasons, but it’s still strong. Its losses? Coastal Carolina, Louisiana, and Marshall – back before Marshall lost its mojo. That’s not bad.

The program has won five straight bowl games since moving up to the FBS world – the last bowl loss was 1955 – and the last three have been relative walks in park. Focus hasn’t been an issue for a program that expects to win these things.

Let’s put it this way – North Texas couldn’t be any worse than it’s been in the three bowl appearances so far under head coach Seth Littrell. The Mean Green was annihilated by Utah State in 2018 New Mexico and lost by 20 in the 2017 New Orleans, and at the very least, you’re going to see points one way or another when they take the field.

Marshall (7-1) vs UAB (5-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The Conference USA Championship

The running back battle could be fantastic … hopefully. UAB senior Spencer Brown has been the star of the program’s revival, running for 3,862 career yards with 41 touchdowns, but he missed the game against Rice last week.

He’s not much of a receiver, but he’s a 100-yard machine workhorse who ran for 156 yards and a score in the 2018 Conference USA Championship win and 65 in last year’s loss. If he can’t go, there’s a decent running-back-by-committee approach to work with.

Marshall’s Brenden Knox has been bottled up – relatively speaking – over the last two games, but he still has yet to run for fewer than 70 yards this season. Like Brown, Knox is a big, tough back who’s not used much as a receiver, but will average five yards per pop balancing out the attack. Marshall is 13-2 when he runs for 100 yards, only losing to Virginia Tech in his freshman year, and UCF in last year’s bowl.

This is UAB’s third straight Conference USA Championship appearance – winning in 2018 over Middle Tennessee and losing to Florida Atlantic last year – and Marshall is back for the first time since winning in 2014.

UAB (4-3) vs Rice (2-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why UAB Will Win

UAB has the run defense to hold up.

The secondary has had a few issues, and Miami was able to run wild early in the year, but the Blazers have been great at preventing the big play through the air and force takeaways, and the defensive front is good enough to get into the backfield and be a problem.

No one other than Miami has been able to run for 200 yards on the UAB front, and the line did a decent job of holding up over the last three weeks before missing a whole lot of time.

How much does the time off matter? In a COVID era, obviously it isn’t all about resting up, and of course there’s going to be rust, but it’s been almost since weeks since the team has been able to play. It’ll be ready.

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Rice Will Win

Rice just shut down Marshall.

The Thundering Herd still might be the best team in Conference USA by far, but they couldn’t do anything lsat week with five interceptions given away in a 20-0 loss to Rice.

The Owl defense allowed plenty of passing yards in the loss to Middle Tennessee and too many running yards against North Texas, but it stuffed Marshall for 245 yards of total offense.

Rice is 2-0 when allowing fewer than 385 yards and 0-2 when giving up more.

UAB hasn’t hit 360 yards in two of its last three games and has had a big problem with turnovers, giving it up twice or more in each of the last four games.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Can Rice build off that?

It’s not like the offense did much of anything against the amazing Herd defense, but Rice has a passing attack to bother the rarely-tested UAB secondary, and the run defense will keep Spencer Brown in check, and …

The Blazers will pull this off.

They’ve had enough time off to be ready, the offense will be balanced enough, and they’re not going to turn it over five times like Marshall did.

North Texas (3-5) vs UTEP (3-4) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why UTEP Will Win

It’s UTEP’s shot at a four-win season for the first time since 2016, and to get it, this is when the offense has to get moving.

The North Texas defense has been non-existent at times. It struggles on third downs, it’s getting destroyed against the run, and it gives up big plays and points in bunches.

UTSA has able to run for 443 yards, SMU tore off 366, and the teams that didn’t run all that well was because they were too busy passing. UTEP doesn’t have a special ground game, and it was only able to get over 100 yards three times, but it’s been able to come up with multiple rushing scores in six games.

The Miner offensive line is playing well, and the defensive front is good against the run, but …

Week 15 College Schedule

Why North Texas Will Win

The North Texas offense has the explosion that UTEP doesn’t.

The D might have problems coming up with meaningful stops, but the O is outstanding on third downs, it leads Conference USA in passing, and it’s great at connecting with the downfield passing game.

The accuracy hasn’t been there for Jason Bean – or Austin Aune – but the league’s best attack should be able to roll against a UTEP secondary that hasn’t been tested all that often, but struggled when teams have kept throwing.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Thanks to all the COVID issues, UTEP is not about to play its fifth straight road game – it won’t have a home game this year against an FBS team. The Miners have yet to beat a team that has an FBS win, and it’s not going to happen here.

UTEP will run well early, and then the North Texas passing game will take over and have the game in hand in the second half.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

TCU (5-4) vs Louisiana Tech (5-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The Bulldogs are fresh with just one game since Halloween – rolling by North Texas in a 42-31 shootout a few weeks ago.

The offense isn’t showing its normal firepower of the last few years, and the defense isn’t showing the playmaking ability in the backfield like it should, but there aren’t a lot of giveaways, the O takes advantage of its opportunities, and the team has been competitive against everyone by BYU.

The passing combination of Aaron Allen and Luke Anthony worked great in a strong win over UAB, and TCU is struggling all year against the pass.

Only Oklahoma was able to go off against the Horned Frog secondary, but getting to 200 yards through the air isn’t a problem against this D.

Week 15 College Schedule

Why TCU Will Win

Louisiana Tech doesn’t do anything all that great, and it especially can’t run.

The passing game is okay, and again, Allen and Anthony have been fine, but there isn’t enough pop for the Horned Frogs to be too concerned. The TCU pass rush is good enough to take over, and the defense is among the best in the country at stopping third downs.

Offensively, QB Max Duggan is running well – two 100-yard days in the last four with nine touchdowns on the year – and the passing attack should be good enough to get to 200 yards.

Get up early, and turn the game over to the lines. The Horned Frogs should be able to keep the mistakes to a minimum and take advantage of their chances to pull away.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana Tech isn’t all that bad, but it’s not going to be able do anything on the ground and it won’t throw deep here.

This won’t be anything scintillating, but TCU will go through a business-like effort to roll to an easy win after coming up with a few early scores and a hot start.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL
