Iowa vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

You know what you’re getting.

Iowa might not be explosive offensively, but the defense continues to be a rock and the other side is getting the job done.

Maryland has been bombing away with the passing game, but the Hawkeye D continues to keep the big plays to a minimum. It’s not taking the ball away like it did in the first two wins over Indiana and Iowa State, but it only allowed over 200 passing yards once and the run defense has been a brick wall.

Kent State is running on everyone and Iowa State’s Breece Hall is still terrific, but it doesn’t matter. The Hawkeye defensive front has yet to allow more than 100 yards. However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Maryland Will Win

The ground game is just along for the ride at Maryland. It’s Taulia Tagovailoa who has taken the job to another level.

Underappreciated on a national scale over the first month, he’s hitting 76% of his passes averaging over 300 yards per game with ten touchdowns and just one pick. He’s been brilliant, the receiving combination of Dontay Demus and Rakim Jarrett has been dominant, and overall the O is humming efficiently.

Iowa might have its style and system, but can it ball if the Terps get up early?

There might have been a slew of big plays from the Hawkeyes on both sides of the ball, but they don’t have enough of a downfield passing game and they’re not going to put up points in bunches.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a game of mismatched parts that comes down to just how much Iowa can maintain control and do what it does.

The pass rush is good enough to get to Tagovailoa and hurry him a bit, but the O was able to roll against West Virginia’s great defense and was solid against Illinois. There’s one issue, though …

The Terps didn’t score enough for all of those yards.

They scored enough to win the games, but they almost put up 500 yards on both the Mountaineers and Illini and couldn’t get the win.

They’ll get plenty of yards on Iowa, but they won’t be able to put the game away. It won’t be a slow-and-steady-wins-the-race for the Hawkeyes, but after a tough first half they’ll work their way back, the D will come up with one big stop, and the O will pull this off with a tough scoring drive.

Houston vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

The Cougars have found a groove over the last three layups.

They were able to roll through Rice, Grambling, and Navy with relative ease with a consistent offense and a nasty defense that’s allowed fewer than 100 passing yards in each of the last three games. While that might not seem like any big deal, Houston kept Texas Tech in check, too.

Tulsa is having a hard time moving the chains, there have been a few key special teams breakdowns, and the defense has been ripped to shreds.

Yeah, playing Ohio State and Oklahoma State screwed up the stats, but Tulsa lost to UC Davis, too.

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Tulsa Will Win

The running game is rocking.

The Golden Hurricane got stuffed by Ohio State, but the 308 yards against Arkansas State helped control the game in a 41-34 win. Yes, the Houston pass defense has been statically great, but it’s about to deal with Davis Brin, who’s averaging over 300 yards per game with five scoring passes in the last two games.

Houston might have a steady O over the last few games against inferior competition, but will the downfield passing game be there? The O line is having problems keeping defenses out of the backfield and the attack has yet to prove it can blow up.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Tulsa is a strange team that manages to play up or down to the competition.

For all of the good things it has done, there have been a few too many breakdowns, too many penalties, and too many failed drives when the chances have been there.

This is a moment for Houston. It has to prove it can beat a decent team and get to 4-1. It might not be anything scintillating, but the Cougars will be just a wee bit sharper when it has to be.

Virginia vs Miami Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

Just how healthy is D’Eriq King?

The star Miami quarterback missed the Central Connecticut game with a shoulder injury because it was Central Connecticut in a short week before Virginia. Tyler Van Dyke was great in the 69-0 win, but when healthy, King is the difference-maker.

For a team that made the Turnover Chain a big deal, Miami has a mega problem with turnover margin, and the offense isn’t showing enough consistent pop to make up for the errors.

Virginia leads the nation in passing averaging over 430 yards per game – Brennan Armstrong has gone off with over 400 yards in each of his last three games.

The Miami pass defense was roasted in the losses to Alabama and Michigan State – the team has lost its last four games when allowing over 200 yards through the air.

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami Will Win

It’s Virginia. It’s head coach Bronco Mendenhall. It’s smart, efficient play on offense, tough defense, and …

Yeah, not so much on that last part.

The Cavaliers have the worst run defense in the ACC after getting hit for 577 yards in losses to North Carolina and Wake Forest. Miami was awful on the ground in the two losses and rumbled in the wins.

Going back to 2019, Miami has won its last six games when getting to 160 yards or more – it has to run and keep testing the Virginia defensive front.

Miami might not be playing all that great overall, but the D is getting into the backfield and should keep on rolling against a shaky Virginia offensive front.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can either team play any defense?

Virginia is getting bombed on way too much just as the Miami passing attack is kicking in. This should be a wild shootout between two disappointing teams, and it should all equal a whole lot of fun with a ton of big plays.

Miami’s ability to get into the backfield will be just enough of a difference to get by. It’s not going to pull the season out of a nosedive, but getting the home victory will be a big deal after the rocky start.

Virginia Tech vs Richmond Game Preview

Why Richmond Will Win

The Spiders are going to bring the play on the lines.

They might be coming off a tough loss to Villanova, but so far this season they’ve been terrific up front at keeping teams out of the backfield on one side, and decent against the run on the other.

They’re going to move the chains, they’re going to come up with third down stops, and they’re going to catch a Virginia Tech team that might be moping a little bit after a stunningly mediocre performance in a loss to West Virginia.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The defense that started the season so well wasn’t all that bad against the Mountaineers. It just took too long to wake up.

The pass rush has been strong and the D is taking the ball away, but more than anything else, the team isn’t beating itself.

It’s not getting flagged enough to matter, there aren’t a ton of turnovers, and outside of a few too many empty drives this early in the season, the team has been okay.

Against Richmond, now is the time to empty the passing game tank and test some things out, but …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Be careful with this. Richmond is just plucky enough to keep this from being an easy paycheck game.

This isn’t just going to be for show. The Spiders can pull this off if the Hokies start making mistakes.

The Virginia Tech passing game worked okay in comeback mode against the Mountaineers, but this week it’ll get into a quick-hitting groove from the start. Richmond won’t get ripped apart, but the Hokies should have this by halftime.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Miami vs Central Connecticut State Game Preview

Why Central Connecticut State Will Win

Can the Blue Devils catch the Hurricanes while they’re really, really down?

The ACC season kicks in next week with Virginia, and Miami could use any sort of break after getting rocked by Alabama and Michigan State and struggling against Appalachian State.

The Canes can’t move the ball as well as they should. There’s little to no running game, there’s no ball control, and the defense isn’t picking up the slack.

Central Connecticut State is fantastic at controlling the game by hanging on to the ball for over 38 minutes per game. It doesn’t turn the ball over, the run D has been great, and …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami Will Win

There isn’t enough offense to keep up, and the secondary is about to get bombed on.

Miami will obviously use this game as a tune-up, and it needs it.

The offensive line has to prove it can consistently block someone and the running backs have to know what it’s like to have a hole to run through.

As long as there aren’t any big turnovers, Miami should be able to do whatever it wants against this D.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Normally this would be the game to get some rest, see what the 2s and 3s can do, and just enjoy the scrimmage.

Miami needs this just to feel good about itself, if only for a moment.

It’s not going to play D’Eriq King any more than it has to, but the team isn’t going to take it easy. Beating Central Connecticut State won’t prove anything, but the team needs to have a little fun.

Pitt vs New Hampshire Game Preview

Why New Hampshire Will Win

It’s a dangerous team that could beat Pitt if things go the right way.

The Wildcats force a lot of turnovers, the pass rush is there to bother Panther QB Kenny Pickett, and overall the defense might just be able to keep down what’s been a machine so far.

For all of the good things Pitt has done, the defense fall off last week in a stunning 44-41 loss to Western Michigan. The secondary has been hit-or-miss and enough breakdowns overall are happening to be a concern, but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Pitt Will Win

The offense has ben outstanding.

The Panthers are averaging close to 500 yards per game with 133 points over the first three games. There isn’t much of a running game like in past years, but QB Kenny Pickett is having a whale of a start with the air show.

As always, the pass rush is among the best in the country. It should be a constant bother, there will be a few fumble recoveries – a slight issue so far – and the team should be able to bomb its way out of jams.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

After the clunker of last week and with two straight ACC road games coming up before hosting Clemson, Pitt needs to get everything right.

The offense has been amazing, but it could use a great defensive performance over a dangerous team that’s going to keep bringing the O.

New Hampshire won’t be an easy out, but it won’t keep up.

Temple vs Wagner Game Preview

Why Wagner Will Win

The Seahawks might have been blown out by Buffalo 69-7, but they really do have some good parts.

The passing game pushes the ball down the field, the D isn’t bad on third downs, and there’s just enough scoring punch to matter.

Temple gave up 24 points to Akron, couldn’t stop giving the ball to Rutgers, and couldn’t do anything against Boston College. It might have a win, but it can’t convert on third downs, the offense is bad and there are too many penalties.

However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Temple Will Win

This is where everything goes right.

The Owls did have a problem against Rutgers, and the Boston College loss wasn’t that miserable for 28-3. This week, the passing game should go off against a defense that can’t slow down the big play, and when it comes to penalties, Wagner has no problems getting involved in the fun.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Temple just needs to find something that consistently works well. The pass defense has been good, and overall the D has been fine. The offense is going to use this game to sharpen the tools.

The Owls HAVE to start converting on third downs and they need to control the clock more. Both of those things are about to happen.

Northern Illinois vs Maine Game Preview

Why Maine Will Win

Can the Black Bears get the pass rush going just enough to be a bother, and can they run well enough to control the game a bit.

They’ve been a bit all over the map so far with a decent win over Merrimack, and strong loss to a good Delaware team, and a blowout loss to a great James Madison. They’ve got enough on both sides of the ball to hang around.

Northern Illinois hasn’t been able to do much to get the defense off the field and has the worst run D in the FBS, but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

Maine isn’t running like Michigan, and Wyoming went off in a big firefight.

The Huskies are playing far better than they have in a few years, and it starts with the improvement on the offensive line.

Maine can get into the backfield a bit, but it’s not going to do anything to consistently bother NIU QB Rocky Lombardi – he needs all the time he can get.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

NIU appears to have found something in Harrison Waylee, a freshman running back with the upside to take over games.

The Huskies will average over five yards per carry, the dense will enjoy the relative week off after a rough first three games, and head coach Thomas Hammock will have the team at 2-2 before diving into the MAC season.
