Michigan vs Wisconsin Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

Graham Mertz.

It’s absolutely not fair to put two key losses on a college kid – it’s always on the well-paid adult coaches to teach and make the situation work. In Wisconsin’s case, the inability to consistently run the ball has been a problem since the beginning of last year, and the misery in the red zone has proven costly.

The Badgers were 1-of-4 inside the 20 in the 16-10 loss to Penn State, and settled for two field goals when the Notre Dame game was still in question.

With all of that, Mertz has to be better after throwing four picks against the Irish – two were returned for scores – and two against Penn State.

Michigan just has to hang around.

The Wisconsin secondary will give up a few deep shots if you keep testing them out – ask Penn State – and Cade McNamara is averaging over ten yards per throw. As long as the Wolverines can be patient, the chance will be there for a passing attack that has to work because …

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Defense, defense, defense.

Lost in the mega-meltdown of the Badgers in the fourth quarter against Notre Dame was how the defense did its part with absolutely no help from the other side.

The Badgers were supposed to dominate the Notre Dame offensive front – they came up with six sacks and allowed three rushing yards – and allowed just 248 yards of total offense.

The Michigan running game was held in check by Rutgers and it should be ground down to a halt again. It’s all about whether or not those Mertz turnovers and mistakes stop – Michigan only has four takeaways and doesn’t generate enough pressure in the backfield.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been totally forgotten now, but Wisconsin outplayed Penn State and had that game won, but the Penn State defense stepped up in the key moments to pull it off.

Wisconsin was actually winning 13-10 in Soldier Field early in the fourth, and then the ensuing kickoff return after a field goal started the avalanche.

This is one of the big moments for a Badger program that hasn’t been itself. It hasn’t been able to run the ball well enough, there are too many mistakes, and last week’s final 14 minutes were among the most embarrassing in the last 25 years for the program.

That will all translate into a strong first half, but once again, there will be missed opportunity after missed opportunity. Wisconsin will seem like it’s dominating, and it’ll be up 9-6.

Mertz will be fine, and the defense will be great, but the red zone woes will continue as Michigan bends just enough to look shaky.

Two big deep plays will open things up in the second half as the Wolverines escape a brutal fight that ends with Mertz’s first turnover of the game.

Illinois vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

So what’s Charlotte doing so right in this solid 3-1 start?

First, that loss to Georgia State a few weeks ago looks a lot more acceptable – Auburn almost lost to the Panthers, too – and 3-1 is 3-1 even if the Middle Tennessee and Duke games were shaky.

The 49ers are getting terrific play out of veteran QB Chris Reynolds, who threw for over 300 yards twice – he was fantastic against Duke – and failed to throw a pick in two games. He’s the type of veteran leader who can carry the team into a Big Ten stadium and make this a fight.

The team controlling the clock well by making teams play at its own pace, the offensive line has been excellent, and there aren’t a ton of turnovers to deal with. However …

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Illinois Will Win

The Charlotte run defense is having some issues.

Duke went off, Georgia State ran for almost 300 yards, and Middle Tennessee was too busy throwing, but ran for over five yards per carry.

Illinois is having a hard time catching much of a break with three close losses and a bombing from Virginia, but it should be able to line up and pound away  with a decent group of young backs to work in a rotation.

This hasn’t been pretty since the win over Nebraska, but the Illini can control the clock, too, and they’re good at forcing takeaways. If they can get any sort of effective downfield passing game, they should be okay.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA was able to waltz into Champaign and leave with a smoothie and a win, and now it’s up to another Conference USA team to try pulling off something special.

Charlotte was able to get by Duke because of meltdowns from the other side – Illinois has to gack this away to lose.

The Illini have been close, and now they’ll finally get that second win under Bret Bielema. It’s not going to be pretty, and it’ll take a full four quarters to do it, but the Big Ten running game will take over late.

Minnesota vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

Which Minnesota team will show up?

Is it the one that pounded away in a shockingly dominant 30-0 win at Colorado, or is it the one that couldn’t put an offensive drive together in the brutal 14-10 loss to Bowling Green?

Either way, the Gophers have figured out one key thing – their run defense is absolutely stellar.

It held the Buffs to -19 net rushing yards and Bowling Green only gained 22, all while the Gophers were able to run well enough on their own to at least mask a gigantic issue – we’ll get to that in a second.

Okay, okay, Purdue doesn’t run so a great run D isn’t the be all end all in this, but start with assuming Minnesota will allow about 50 rushing yards and …

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Purdue Will Win

Purdue will throw and throw some more.

The Boilermaker passing game isn’t a dominant force – stalled a little too easily in the 13-9 win over Illinois – but it’s doing a nice job of controlling the clock and the tempo of games. Minnesota all but lives on time of possession, and Purdue might be able to take that away.

Oh, and Minnesota really, really can’t get the passing game going.

Tanner Morgan is a veteran quarterback who was among the most efficient passers in America two years ago, and he completed 5-of-13 passes for 59 yards with two picks against Bowling Green.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue is known for its offense, but the defense is playing great.

The win over Oregon State is looking much, much better now after the Beavers rolled USC, the close battle against Notre Dame isn’t anything to be ashamed of, and overall the D has allowed just 57 points in four games.

There’s that, and there’s the anger factor after Purdue gagged/was robbed in last year’s game – a questionable pass interference call was the big hubbub in the 34-31 loss.

Be floored if this is any sort of a shootout.

Minnesota is just flaky enough to pull a brilliant game out of its Gopher hole and turn its season right back around, but the Purdue run defense is playing just well enough to hold on.

Ohio State vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

The talent is there. It’s just whether or not the team can get through the rough patches until everyone starts to mesh.

It starts with this – Ohio State has to keep running the ball.

CJ Stroud – who sat out the Akron game with a shoulder injury – doesn’t take off, but he doesn’t have to with freshman TreVeyon Henderson looking every bit the star he was supposed to be when he signed on. He hit Tulsa for 277 yards and ran through Akron for 93 yards on just eight carries.

The Rutgers run defense has been solid so far, but the Buckeyes have to keep pounding and keep pounding some more. Even if it doesn’t always work – Michigan’s rising ground attack couldn’t get going – controlling the clock is a must because …

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Rutgers Will Win

Rutgers is more than happy to grind this game down to a dead stop.

Head coach Greg Schiano has created a nice formula. Find guys who don’t miss tackles, come up with third down stops, don’t turn the ball over, force takeaways, don’t get penalized, and own the time of possession battle.

The Scarlet Knights can’t hang punch for punch with the Buckeyes, but they can hold the ball for 34ish minutes. Ohio State is getting crushed in the time of possession battle, but …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Lost in the narrative of Ohio State struggling on defense and being relatively down compared to the last few years is one way key element …

The offense is TOTALLY working. Ohio State is second in the nation in total O averaging way over 500 yards per game.

Yeah, Stroud missed some receivers here and there in the first few games, and he wasn’t razor-sharp for stretches against Oregon, and the offensive line isn’t consistent and the team is steady pumping out tons and tons of yards.

Before you blow that off in any way, ask Clemson what it’s like to reload the offense. Check with Oklahoma to see how that thing is working. With that said, be very, very careful here.

Rutgers doesn’t have enough in the bag to win unless there’s a total Buckeye meltdown. There have to be at least four Scarlet Knight takeaways, the red zone D has to be air tight, and everything has to go right when it comes to ball control.

That’s all not going to happen, but a 21-point Ohio State second half explosion will to finally be able to breathe easier.

Indiana vs Penn State Game Preview

Why Indiana Will Win

The Penn State offense isn’t anything special on the ground.

It was able to rip apart Ball State, but it did next to nothing against Wisconsin and got stuffed by Auburn and … Villanova? (The Wildcats can play a little D, by the way.)

The fast-paced offense is getting the job done through the air, but it’s not controlling the clock and it’s not moving the chains like it should.

The Hoosiers haven’t exactly been ripping it up, but they’re starting to get the passing attack going a bit and they can own the clock. Be shocked if they don’t have the ball for at least 35 minutes.

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Penn State Will Win

So what’s missing with Indiana?

Michael Penix Jr. isn’t hitting the deep shots like he did last year – the passing game just isn’t efficient enough – there isn’t enough pressure in the backfield, and the team isn’t catching or forcing the breaks it came up with last year.

Penn State might not be air tight, and it might be overrated based on wins over Wisconsin (no offense) and Auburn (should’ve lost to Georgia State), but it’s throwing the ball well and it’s coming up with the big plays in the key moments.

Sean Clifford has been brilliant after dealing with he Badger D to start things off, hitting over 75% of his throws over the last three games highlighted by his 28-of-32 day against Auburn. If he gets going and the O gets up early, Indiana doesn’t have the pop against this defense to keep up.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a bit silly to call this a revenge game considering Penn State screwed up the 2020 opener every bit as much as Indiana won it, but …

Yeah, Penn State probably wouldn’t mind getting a little payback for the 36-35 game it had locked down until the final 90 seconds.

Lost in the narrative and the ending – with Penix lunging for a game-winning two-point conversion in overtime, and the controversy over whether or not he was down – was that Penn State totally dominated. IU found a way to get the job done.

This year’s Hoosier team is missing that spark.

Last year’s version was a +8 in turnover margin over the first four games. This one is -2.

The defense isn’t tight enough, the offense isn’t sharp enough, and …

IU will still give Penn State a game up until the middle of the second half. It’ll take too long for the Nittany Lions to pull away, but they’ll settle in and get it done.

The final score won’t be indicative of how good the game is.

Tennessee vs Missouri Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

Missouri can’t come up with a third down stop.

The offense has been dangerous enough to win games, but the D can’t get off the field. Dead last in the SEC in total D, it’s been roasted but all three FBS teams on the schedule and even gave up close 300 rushing yards to SE Missouri State.

Kentucky and Boston College each moved the chains at will, and Mizzou allowed SEMO and Central Michigan to each convert 45% of their chances.

Tennessee might not be doing a whole lot on the money downs, but they’re running the ball relatively well and should be able to rumble on the porous Tiger front.

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Missouri Will Win

Tennessee isn’t controlling the clock at all. That’s partly by design in the new offense, but in a game like this against a struggling D, being able to dominate the tempo would be nice.

The Vol D hasn’t been all that bad overall but it helps that two of the games were against Bowling Green and Tennessee Tech, and Pitt’s Kenny Pickett was able to throw for over 300.

Mizzou has to keep this balanced. Tyler Badie is one of the SEC’s best all-around backs, and Connor Bazelak is averaging exactly 300 passing yards per game. The O is there …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Missouri defense do anything?

Just when Tennessee was finally figuring out that Hendon Hooker was the team’s best quarterback, he got knocked out of the Florida game and is questionable.

The Vols have some nice backs and a good running game, but can Joe Milton – if he really is the man at QB – be accurate enough to get this done?

Missouri’s offense will be a wee bit sharper at home in a fun shootout.

WKU vs Michigan State Game Preview

Why WKU Will Win

Michigan State, welcome to the Bailey Zappe experience.

WKU went from 0-to-60 in one offseason with the addition of the Houston Baptist offensive parts to make the thing go, and it’s working.

The Hilltoppers are second in the nation in passing, third in passing efficiency, and they’re firing at will with over 400 yards per game through the air.

Amazing on third downs, great at keeping the mistakes to a minimum, and good enough to score in bunches, Zappe is a high-powered passer who’ll hit over 70% of his throws and keep the Spartans on their heels all game long.

WKU almost pulled off the win at Indiana with over 365 passing yards in the 33-31 loss, however …

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Michigan State Will Win

The Hoosiers rolled up over 500 yards.

Michigan State is coming off a grind of a win over Nebraska, but it found a way to get the job done even though it didn’t put together one of its better performances.

The offense sputtered, the defense had issues with QB Adrian Martinez, and yet the defense still came through when needed. Zappe might get the ball out of his hands in a hurry, but he’ll have to be a half-click faster with the Spartan pass rush and defensive front good enough to come up with at least three sacks and a whole lot of pressure.

Offensively, after struggling to get Kenneth Walker and the rushing attack going against the Huskers, MSU will make a point early on to get physical, but …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Michigan State start to control the clock a little bit?

There’s been a slight time of possession problem so far, and that’s partly because the secondary hasn’t been anything special yet.

Northwestern, Miami, and Nebraska were all effective through the air in their own way – they each went for 248 yards or more – and dealing with Zappe and company will be a problem.

The Spartans will be in for a scare, but the defense will figure out how to slow this thing down when absolutely needed.

Georgia vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

This isn’t a perfect team, but it’s been almost flawless so far for what it wants to do. More to the point, it won’t buckle in a game like this. This showdown won’t be a high-flying fun show, but as the Hogs showed against Texas A&M, that’s fine.

Arkansas runs well, hits the big play down the field, controls games defensively on third downs, and wins the turnover battle.

Georgia has given it up seven times in the first four games. Arkansas needs to come up with a few takeaways and capitalize on them all. The defense has to hold on and match the Dawg side big stop for big stop.

Georgia might lead the nation in total defense, but Arkansas hasn’t allowed more than 255 yards in any of the last three games.

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia Will Win

The Bulldog defense is special – it allowed 23 points so far against Clemson, two SEC teams, and a UAB squad that might win the Conference USA title – but the offensive side is getting it done, too.

South Carolina might not be great, but it has a defense. UAB’s D is solid, and Vanderbilt is … uh … Vanderbilt plays in the SEC. The Dawg O came up with over 1,500 yards and 158 in those three games.

It starts with a line that’s not allowing anything to happen in the backfield, giving JT Daniels and Stetson Bennett plenty of time to work. Those two combined so far to hit almost 75% of their passes with 11 touchdowns.

Yes, Arkansas has been phenomenal so far, but it there’s a problem with penalties, the return game isn’t anything great, and the O isn’t good enough on third downs.

It’s going to have to be flawless to pull this off.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas is for real.

KJ Jefferson could stand to be more accurate, but he’s a big-time playmakers who’s making up for his inconsistencies with the big plays. He’ll get to Georgia for one home run, but that should be about it.

Yeah, Arkansas is for real, but Georgia might be the No. 1 team in the country.

The defense will keep the dynamic playmakers in the Hog backfield from taking off, and the secondary will keep the downfield passing game under wraps.

With some due respect to the talented Texas quarterbacks, Arkansas hasn’t faced high-end passing quarterback – Rice and Georgia Southern don’t throw well enough, and Texas A&M’s Zach Calzada is just okay so far.

JT Daniels might not be 100%, but he’ll do enough to give the Arkansas secondary a rough day. The D will take care of the rest.

Northwestern vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Northwestern Will Win

Are the Wildcats figuring it out?

Is this one of Pat Fitzgerald’s slow-starting teams that kicks it all in after the first few games are out of the way?

Getting the running game going against Ohio isn’t all that big a deal – the Bobcats are having a rough time – but at least there’s some production.

The defense isn’t its normal dominant self – Duke went off two weeks ago and Michigan State ran wild in the opener, but it’s been okay at getting into the backfield and Nebraska isn’t doing a whole lot to keep defenses from living behind the line.

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Nebraska Will Win

The passing game is rolling with five straight 200-yard games to start the season. It might not always be consistent, but it’s putting up yards. Adrian Martinez has been great, and …

It’s the other side of the ball that’s stepping it up.

The Huskers haven’t been great at getting off the field – even though they give up too many third down tries – but controlling the clock isn’t a problem with an O that’s cranking out first downs by the bucket.

Oklahoma and Michigan State both stalled a bit too often – the Spartans only came up with 254 yards last week – and now Nebraska gets a Northwestern offense that can’t get anything going with the downfield passing game.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Enough is enough.

Scott Frost and Nebraska went from being a major disappointment, to winning two games they should’ve against Fordham and Buffalo, to coming up with two totally acceptable and gut-wrenching road losses to Oklahoma and Michigan State.

This is one win the coach and program must win.

The Huskers are playing well, but it has to translate into a relatively easy victory against a Northwestern team that’s a mere shadow of its 2020 self. A few early Big Red scores will force the Wildcats to press, and it won’t go well.

It’s Northwestern – and it’s Nebraska – so there will be a bit of second-half comeback thanks to a few Husker mistakes. It won’t be as easy as it should be, but Nebraska will get the win with Martinez being the difference-maker to control the clock and the game in the fourth quarter.

BYU vs Utah State Game Preview

Why BYU Will Win

So how is BYU doing this? How is it 4-0 with three wins over Pac-12 teams and a probably-better-than-it-seems victory over USF?

This isn’t the pounding running team of 2020, but it’s fine on the ground. There isn’t the passing game like it had when Zach Wilson was running it, but it’s efficient.

The offense isn’t turning the ball over enough to matter, and the defense is taking it away helped by a whole lot of pressure into the backfield.

The team isn’t screwing up – there aren’t a slew of penalties, the special teams are fine, and again, there aren’t a lot of giveaways.

How did Utah State lose to Boise State? 13 penalties, three turnovers, and a whole lot of pressure allowed by the Bronco defensive front.

Why Utah State Will Win

Utah State might have screwed up a bit too much – and it only scored three points – but the offensive punch was there.

The Aggies remained almost perfectly balanced – they’re a 200-yard rushing/200-yard passing machine – with the 443 yards put up against the Broncos just fine. They just couldn’t translate the effort into points.

For all the great things BYU does, it’ll give up rushing yards, it’s not great at controlling the clock – Utah State goes fast and gets off the field in a hurry – and it can be run on a bit.

Utah averaged close to eight yards per carry against the Cougars, and Arizona State averaged five. Utah State has the firepower

What’s Going To Happen

The Cougars have been solid so far, but when it’s on, Utah State has been sensational. After a dud of a loss at home against Boise State, can the Aggie offense get its groove back?

Yes, and it won’t be enough.

Utah State will come out roaring with a few big early scoring drives, but the Cougars will hang around with a few key scores up until the early fourth. The BYU O line will take over, the offense will control the final ten minutes, and it’ll come down to one late defensive stop to get out with a tough win.
