Clemson vs Boston College Game Preview

Why Boston College Will Win

The offense keeps on rolling.

The Eagles had a far better running game than it did last year, managing to push through the problems after losing star QB Phil Jurkovec by running for 275 yards against Missouri in the 41-34 win last week.

The Eagles have been ultra-efficient, ranking third in the nation in third down conversions rolling at a 57% clip, there aren’t a slew of turnovers, and the O comes away with points on almost every trip inside the red zone.

It all starts with an offensive line that’s been fantastic in pass protection and gets the job done for the ground attack. Against a Clemson defensive front that’s hit by injuries – but still great – BC should be able to generate a bit of a push.

However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Clemson Will Win

The Clemson defense is still outstanding.

It gave up a few too many passing yards – 243 – in the overtime loss to NC State after allowing 212 to Georgia Tech. The run defense has done enough to get the job done.

Even with the injuries to Bryan Bresee – who’s out for the year with a torn ACL – and with Tyler Davis out with a torn bicep, the defensive front is still going to be a rock. Even with all of the problems, Clemson still leads the ACC in scoring D allowing 12 points per game.

Eventually the Clemson offense will work. There’s too much talent, too much firepower, and too many good parts to be this mediocre. Boston College doesn’t generate enough consistent pressure to matter.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Boston College had three easy games to warm up, and it passed the big test last week in the win over Missouri.

Can Clemson put together an air-tight, efficient performance after failing to do that on both sides of the ball against the first three FBS teams on the schedule?

Nope.

The Tiger offense will continue to stall and sputter, but the defense will once again save the day. Boston College will keep Clemson to under 300 yards, but DJ Uiagalelei will grind out two scoring drives to survive and get out with a tough win.

Clemson vs NC State Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

So is it officially time to freak out?

The offense couldn’t work in the 14-8 win over Georgia Tech, the passing game has been a problem, and hanging 49 on South Carolina State a few weeks ago now seems like more of an aberration.

But the defense has been outstanding.

It stuffed Georgia, held on against Georgia Tech when the O wasn’t getting the job done, and is doing a great job of getting off the field.

NC State’s overall stats are great, but the O worked against USF and Furman, but stalled on the ground in the loss to Mississippi State. The ground attack isn’t going to work this week, either, but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why NC State Will Win

The Clemson defense might be deep and outstanding, but it lost DT Tyler Davis to a torn bicep. He was just getting back into a groove after missing the opener, and now he’s out for several weeks.

NC State just needs to find a way to come up with a few scores – its defense is good enough to keep the middling Tiger attack under wraps. Pack QB Devin Leary has been good, the offensive line has given him time to work, and the defense takes care of the rest.

Yes, there was a long delay, and yes, it was a strange game overall, but things aren’t going well when you can’t get to 300 yards and need a fourth quarter touchdown to get by Georgia Tech. Clemson really is struggling.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

NC State has the defense, the experience on offense, and the coaching staff to pull this off if Clemson really is down and doesn’t have a few kinks to work out …

Offensively. The Clemson defense is just fine.

The Tigers O will continue to be lousy, but the D will come up with stop after stop to keep the game alive. NC State’s offense will stall on third downs, DJ Uiagalelei will hit on one big second half throw, and the upset bid will come up just short.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Clemson (1-1) vs Georgia Tech (1-1) Game Preview

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Does Georgia Tech really have a passing game now?

It’s not the running team of the Paul Johnson days as it tries to balance things out a bit, but it’s still going to try to get things done on the ground. However, that’s not going to happen against the Clemson defense.

Jordan Yates, though, started throwing well with a great performance against Kennesaw State last week to go along with a few big things from the ground game. Basically, Georgia Tech did what it’s supposed to do against an FCS team – it worked on things.

The O had a bad day in the loss to Northern Illinois, but the defense was great and it did the job against Kennesaw State. The secondary has been solid, the D has been great on third downs, and …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Clemson Will Win

Clemson isn’t Northern Illinois or Kennesaw State.

Blowing out South Carolina State doesn’t matter after the loss to Georgia, but the running game got to stretch its legs.

A problem last year – at least by Clemson’s standards – the ground attack went nowhere against a Georgia D that’ll stuff everyone, and then it went off against the Bulldogs of South Carolina State with close to seven yards per pop.

Okay, so it would be nice if DJ Uiagalelei was a little sharper, but that’s nitpicking. The offense should be able to grind away on a Georgia Tech defense that was fine in the first two games but is about to get hit hard.

Clemson still wants and needs to get the running game to a dominant level, and it’s going to give it another push this week.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s one of the biggest discussion points ever since the loss to Georgia – can Clemson get back to the College Football Playoff?

It’s considered a foregone conclusion that the Tigers will rip through the rest of its relatively light schedule, go 12-1 with an ACC title, and then the CFP committee will have a big discussion and decision.

It starts here. Don’t just assume Clemson is going to come out of the tunnel and destroy every ACC thing in its path. It’s in a strange position of having no margin for error as it still tries to go forward with a slew of new starting skill parts, and …

The defense will take care of everything.

It’s not going to be 73-7 like last year, but the points will come. It might be ragged, but the offense will be just fine, the amazing defense will stuff everything Georgia Tech tries to do, and it’ll feel and seem like business as usual.

Just watch, though, for how well Clemson runs and how sharp Uiagalelei is.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Clemson (0-1) vs South Carolina State (0-1) Game Preview

Why South Carolina State Will Win

The Bulldogs can run the ball.

They might have had a few issues in the fun 42-41 loss to Alabama A&M – to be nice about it; more in a moment – but they ran for big chunks with a do-it-all day from QB Corey Fields.

Of course Clemson is going to do whatever it wants, but as long as South Carolina State doesn’t turn the ball over, it should be able to generate a few good drives with a couple of shots at scoring.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Clemson Will Win

If you want to see DJ Uiagalelei take target practice, here you go.

Alabama A&M’s Aqeel Glass threw for 426 yards and four scores against the Bulldog secondary. Clemson will hit big play after big play early on just to get everything moving.

More than that, this is the game to get the ground game working. The offensive line struggled to generate enough of a push throughout last season, and it didn’t do a thing against Georgia in the 10-3 loss. The team will use this to get the live work before ACC play kicks in.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be over about five minutes in, and then it’s about how much Clemson wants to see what the 2s and 3s can do.

The South Carolina State defense will have one drive that threatens a few points, but it’ll stall. Clemson will open up the attack to see what everyone can do.

Clemson (0-0) vs Georgia (0-0) Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

Lost in yet another amazing season by Clemson, and yet another ACC Championship, and yet another trip to the College Football Playoff was a defense that was never 100% right.

It was still No. 1 in the ACC in total and scoring defense, but it never quite had all of the parts working like they were supposed to.

It was hardly a rebuilding year, but it was a young group that suffered through too many bumps and bruises – which turned into a minor positive to create a more seasoned D for 2021. Even so, it was still fantastic, and now …

Look out. This is a seasoned, veteran D full of next-level talents and top tacklers and producers from 2020.

How good is it? Future NFL starting CB Derion Kendrick left for Georgia, and the secondary might still be the best in college football.

Oh yeah, and the offense has that DJ Uiagalelei guy at quarterback – he almost certainly would’ve the No. 2 overall pick behind Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 NFL Draft, if he was eligible – and in a wonderful story, star WR Justyn Ross is expected to be back after missing all of last year and pushing through a frightening neck and spine condition.

It’s Clemson. It has as much talent as anyone, the coaching is as good as any in the country, and it’ll be a stunner if there’s anything less than another ACC Championship and another trip to the College Football Playoff no matter how this game shakes out.

But to nitpick …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia Will Win

Will Clemson be able to run the ball?

Current Jacksonville Jaguar Travis Etienne wasn’t his normal dominant self stat-wise, mostly because he didn’t consistently have a whole lot of room to move.

The Tiger offensive front will be outstanding, but it has to prove it can blast away for a ground attack that only hit the 200-yard mark three times after getting there in ten games in 2019.

And it has to do it against the nation’s best defense against the run in 2020.

The Bulldog D reloaded with more next-level talents, the rotation on the line is a killer, and overall there could be as many as six top two-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft.

But the spotlight will be on JT Daniels – the best starting quarterback yet in the Kirby Smart era, considering Justin Fields played more of a complementary role when he was there.

He give the Bulldog offense a downfield passing attack it hasn’t had in a long, long time, and it’s all going to work behind a tremendous offensive front that has too much talent to not be among the nation’s best.

Week 1 College Football Schedule, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Be shocked if this is a shootout – these defenses are too good.

Both offenses will hang 40+ on the board on a regular basis, but in Atlanta it’s going to be tough getting the respective ground attacks moving, and both quarterbacks will be under pressure all game long.

In the big picture, this game is about the loser. If it’s a close battle that comes down to the very end, both teams are still deep in the College Football Playoff chase no matter what. If it’s a total wipeout, though, that’s a problem.

It’s not going to be a total wipeout.

Expect a brutal, hard-hitting game with national championship intensity throughout.

Georgia will have a little more success on the ground, Clemson will have a little more success through the air, and in the end, Uiagalelei will throw one more pick than Daniels – that will be the difference.

Welcome to the 2021 college football season. This is is what we’ve all been waiting for, and it won’t disappoint. (Fingers crossed.)

The College Football News 2021 ACC preseason rankings along with a quick take on every team.

This is NOT a ranking of where the teams are going to finish. This is based on how good we think the ACC teams are going into the 2021 season.

2021 CFN ACC Preseason Rankings: Atlantic

1. Clemson Tigers

Quick Take: If your concern is the inexperience of QB DJ Uiagalelei and a rotation of top-shelf running back talent to overcome the loss of Travis Etienne, you’re going to be okay. The defense is going to be a killer to make up for any and all concerns on the other side.
Clemson Preview | Schedule

2. NC State Wolfpack

Quick Take: This should be among the ACC’s most interesting X factors. The defensive back seven is as strong as any outside of Clemson’s, but the lines on both sides have to terrific. If they are, this is a dangerous team that should do a whole lot of damage.
NC State Preview | Schedule

3. Boston College Eagles

Quick Take: The BC offense was transformed last season and now it should dominate – at least through the air. The ground game is iffy – to be kind – but QB Phil Jurkovec and WR Zay Flowers will put on a show.
BC Preview | Schedule

4. Louisville Cardinals

Quick Take: The defense has talent and experience to be a whole lot better, and Malik Cunningham should be a difference-making veteran quarterback. It’ll be a bounce-back year, but it’ll still be a grind with a tough slate.
Louisville Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532385]

5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Quick Take: You know exactly what you’re getting. The Demon Deacons will never be outcoached, the offense will be fast and fun, and every game will be a shootout. To sound cliché, it’s the type of team that can beat anyone on the right day, but without the high-end talent to take anyone lightly.
Wake Forest Preview | Schedule

6. Florida State Seminoles

Quick Take: Where are the guys? Where are all the superstar FSU NFL prospects? The linebacking corps will be terrific and the ground game should start to work like it’s supposed to under Mike Norvell, but the O is all about the pop and explosion – that might take a bit.
FSU Preview | Schedule

7. Syracuse Orange

Quick Take: It’s just this simple – can the Orange O line block anyone? It hasn’t been able to do that for a few years, but the skill parts are good enough to make some noise if they get a little time to work.
