Why Boston College Will Win

Well hello, running game.

Boston College relied on Phil Jurkovec and the high-powered passing attack int href first five games, and then it committed to the ground game against Georgia Tech – and it worked.

It tried to run against Duke to start the season, and noting happened. It tried against Pitt, and it really didn’t happen. For the first time all year, BC finally hit the 100-yard mark, cranking out 264 yards.

Clemson’s defense has been incredible, but it’s possible to run a little bit against this group. BC won’t do that – it’ll try winning with Jurkovec – but at least it can give it a shot.

Why Clemson Will Win

Here comes the pass rush.

Boston College hasn’t been great in pass protection – it’s part of the reason why the rushing numbers aren’t any good – and it allows way too many plays behind the line.

Clemson didn’t do much to get to the quarterback against Syracuse last week – bizarre, considering the Orange O line is totally miserable – but it’s been great at flying into the backfield on a regular basis. Get to Jurkovec, and it’s going to get ugly.

The Clemson offense continues to be a machine, having few problems scoring when it needs and wants to. There hasn’t been any stress, and that’s because the team is hitting on the big plays early on and coasting from there.

Except against Syracuse.

The Orange kept this interesting in the second half, but when it was time to end it, Clemson did.

What’s Going To Happen

And now everything just took a big turn with Trevor Lawrence testing positive for the coronavirus.

Clemson has a future superstar in DJ Uiagalelei waiting and ready to go, and the football team should be fine, but obviously the dynamic changes.

In a right-offense-right-coaching-right-quarterback-right-day sort of way, Boston College has a shot to pull off something quirky.

Clemson isn’t close to being a program that looks ahead, but the Notre Dame showdown is up next, and BC has enough of a passing attack to make this scary. No one has totally blowtorched the Eagle secondary, but generating the big plays down the field hasn’t been a problem.

One burst of first half points will do it for Clemson and the running game will take over, but it’ll still be at least a wee bit of a game in the third quarter.

Why Syracuse Will Win

At least head coach Dino Babers received a vote of confidence through 2021 and beyond.

The Orange are dominating the turnover battle. For a team that needs as much help as possible and as many breaks as it can get, generating 16 takeaways and being a nation-leading +11 in turnover margin is everything.

Obviously Syracuse is undermanned, but under Babers, the program beat Clemson in 2017, had the game won in 2018 until an amazing Tiger comeback, and in 2019 was flattened 41-6. Keep that last part in mind later.

Clemson isn’t totally perfect.

Why Clemson Will Win

Clemson has been close to perfect.

Any and all complaints so far are about not being just a wee bit better at times. Maybe the ground game wasn’t great against Virginia, and the Wake Forest passing attack worked a little too well, and allowing a few blocked kicks showed a leak, but that’s looking for problems.

Trevor Lawrence has been almost flawless, there hasn’t been any real drama, and now the defensive front is among the best in college football at getting behind the line.

Syracuse’s offensive front has allowed 4.8 sacks per game. It’s still early, but that’s the worst rate of pass protection by a mile by any Power Five program since Washington State allowed 4.75 sacks per game in 2012.

What’s Going To Happen

The 73-7 Clemson win over Georgia Tech last week was breathtaking, but how long will the team keep its foot on the gas? It took it easy against the Yellow Jackets after halftime, and it still didn’t matter in the final score.

Clemson completely dominated and destroyed the Orange last year, and won by 35. This time around, the Tigers can call their shot against a team that couldn’t slow down Liberty, but they’ll get through this light scrimmage and allow a few late scores with the backups up.

Alabama’s defense has struggled, Georgia’s offense is just okay, Notre Dame hasn’t been sharp, and Oklahoma and LSU are already out of the national title hunt.

Give credit to Clemson for making the dominant look routine.

The Tigers haven’t dealt with any real drama on the field so far with an ultra-efficient offense that’s explosive, tough, and brutally effective.

Georgia Tech isn’t sharp enough.

It commits too many penalties, has too many empty tripes, and the special teams have suffered a few meltdowns.

To make this simple, the Georgia Tech run defense isn’t good enough – it allowed over 240 rushing yards in two of the last three games and seven scores.

The defense has been doing a great job of taking the ball away.

Forget for a moment the five turnovers against both UCF and Syracuse, the defense came up with three takeaways in the wins over Florida State and Louisville, and three combined against UCF and Syracuse.

At home, the Yellow Jackets have to pound away and rumble for over 200 yards on the ground just to be in the discussion. They’re averaging over five yards per carry, and they have to keep it rolling by owning third downs, controlling the clock, and forcing turnovers and capitalizing on them.

Georgia Tech will have its moments of pesky with a few big shots down the field to at least have a little bit of fun, but Clemson will be emptying the bench in the fourth quarter yet again.

Business as usual.

Oklahoma is already knocked out of the College Football Playoff chase. LSU got whacked around by Mississippi State. Alabama and Georgia have been fine so far, but the two have a few issues.

Clemson hasn’t had to break a sweat to go 3-0.

It’s biggest problem? It was only up 27-17 in the third quarter against Virginia last week, and once it got that close, Trevor Lawrence and company answered with an easy touchdown drive to effectively put the game away.

The defensive front has been great over the first three games – the run D is allowing just 2.3 yards per carry – and it’s got the speed and athleticism at linebacker to keep Miami QB D’Eriq King from taking off and making big things happen.

Welcome to Clemson.

It’s not fair to suggest that Clemson is bored or wasn’t taking the first part of the season seriously, but now it’s time to flip the switch in primetime.

Why Virginia Will Win

What can the Cavaliers do to slow down the Clemson machine?

In a weird season when it seems like everyone is struggling to get down the timing and the crispness of their offenses, Clemson hasn’t had so much as a blip. However, it helps to play Wake Forest and Citadel to start out.

There haven’t been any issues so far for the Tigers, and there weren’t a whole lot of problems for Virginia in the 38-20 win over Duke that was even more dominant than the final score.

The three Cavalier turnovers were costly, but the defense taking the ball aways seven times made up for that.

The pressure was coming from all sides from the Virginia defense, and that has to kick in from the start. Trevor Lawrence is taking target practice so far.

Why Clemson Will Win

Yeah, that Trevor Lawrence guy.

He was flawless in the ACC Championship win over Virginia last season – throwing for 302 yards and four scores as the Tigers put the game out of its misery in a hurry – and he started out this year connecting on 30-of-37 passes for 519 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions with three rushing scores.

Remember early last year when it seemed like something was wrong? Lawrence was trying to play a little too much hero ball and was forcing things a bit, giving up eight interceptions in the first seven games. Over his last ten games has has thrown 26 touchdown passes and no picks.

The Virginia secondary came up with five interceptions last week against Duke – former Clemson QB Chase Brice had a rough day. That’s not happening this week.

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia isn’t going to get steamrolled.

Clemson will be in control from the start, but Virginia will be just plucky enough to make everyone try in the second half.

Virginia’s 1-2 rushing punch of transfers Khalil Herbert (Kansas) and Raheem Blackshear (Rutgers) will come up with a few nice scoring drives, but not enough of them in the second half.
