Miami vs Clemson Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

The Hurricanes might not do much off the bench, and they don’t get a lot done on the boards, but they know how to get on the move and come up with a whole lot of points.

It’s an attacking team that should be able to roam free against a Clemson team that doesn’t force mistakes and would rather be in control than get into any sort of a track meet.

No, the Canes aren’t amazing on the boards, but Clemson doesn’t do anything on the offensive glass and doesn’t generate enough second chance points.

There’s one big problem, though …

Why Clemson Will Win

Miami is unbeaten at home. So is Clemson.

It’s not that the Hurricanes are bad away from South Florida, but it’s not quite as effective – it doesn’t generate the same level of big plays and takeaways to convert off of.

The Tigers are fantastic from the free throw line, they’re good enough from three to keep up the pressure, and while the doesn’t do much on the offensive glass, they clean everything up on the other end.

They’re able to keep up the points without a problem, but at home they’ve been able to overcome a slew of inconsistencies to keep on winning, so …

What’s Going To Happen

As long as Miami doesn’t get this thing moving and make Clemson start chasing, there shouldn’t be a problem for the home side.

Both teams will hit their free throws down the stretch, but Clemson will do a bit more from three and the defense will be a tad bit stronger.

Why Clemson Will Win

Boston College just doesn’t score enough.

It’s not shooting all that poorly lately, but it doesn’t have a whole lot of firepower to keep up any sort of pace.

The threes were falling in the win over Notre Dame, but there’s nothing to rely on from the outside. Worse yet, the defense isn’t strong enough to manufacture points when the offense isn’t on.

Yeah, the D will force takeaways, but it doesn’t transition the big plays into scores. All of that is a problem against a vice grip of a Clemson defense that’s the best in the ACC in field goal D. It’s okay at stoping the three, but overall its terrific at keeping teams from getting into any sort of a rhythm.

Why Boston College Will Win

Granted, part of it is Clemson’s ability to shoot, but there aren’t any second chance points happening in bunches. The team doesn’t do enough on the defensive glass, that great defense doesn’t force a lot of takeaways, and Boston College has to take advantage of both of that.

It has to end every Tiger possession fast. It has to move the ball around efficiently, and it has to eat up time. There isn’t the scoring pop to get up and down the floor with enough big things to matter, so this has to be about grinding out every possession.

Virginia Tech almost pulled off a win at Clemson by keeping the score lose, but …

What’s Going To Happen

It will take one good Clemson run to put this away. The defense will take care of the rest.

Boston College will struggle to hit 40% from the floor, there won’t be anything happening from three to keep up, and when things on both sides start to bog down, Clemson will hit its free throws, and Boston College won’t.

Capital One Orange Bowl What Happened

Joe Milton connected with Bru McCoy for a 16-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, Jabari Small rumbled for a two-yard score, and the Vols had a 14-0 lead and no problems from there. Clemson was able to pull within seven in for fourth on a Cade Klubnik touchdown run, but Milton answered right back with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Ramel Keyton to put it away.

Clemson owned the clock and controlled the tempo of the game, but it couldn’t close. BT Potter hit two field goals, but he missed three field goals and the Tigers failed to give him a shot late in the first half when the clock ran out with Klubnik being tackled deep in Vol territory.

Milton threw three touchdown passes. He found Squirrel White late in the third quarter for a 14-yard score and a 21-6 lead and didn’t make any big mistakes. He completed 19-of-28 passes for 251 yards and three scores and he ran for five yards.

Capital One Orange Bowl Fun Stats

– Time of Possession: Clemson 36:23 – Tennessee 23:37

– Total Yards: Clemson 484 – Tennessee 375

– Clemson QB Cade Klubnik completed 30-of-54 passes for 320 yards and two picks, and ran 20 times for 51 yards and a score.

Capital One Orange Bowl What It All Means

Tennessee closed out the season in style – literally. The offense didn’t have star QB Hendon Hooker of his star receivers who made the season so great, and the attack still worked. Of course it’s about the parts that make the engine go, but a 31-14 win over the ACC champion showed that it’s as much about the Josh Heupel system and style of play.

With 11 wins the Vols had their best season since 2001. It was the first bowl win since 2019 – they lost the Music City to Purdue last year – to make it 5-1 in bowls since losing the 2010 Music City.

Yeah, Clemson won the ACC Championship, and yeah, Cade Klubnik looks special. But the program needs to work with the transfer portal and has to upgrade the overall talent just a wee bit to get back over the hump. It’s great as is, but it had more parts in place than Tennessee did in this, and it didn’t matter.

Even so, it was a phenomenal year. It was the 12th straight year with double-digit wins and the first season with 11 wins or more since 2019. No, this wasn’t fun, but under Dabo Swinney the Tigers are 8-4 in post-season games over the last 11 years.

Clemson vs Tennessee Capital One Orange Bowl 5 Things To Know

Capital One Orange Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

This would’ve been so awesome if everyone was in place in a College Football Playoff game between these two. As is it should be extremely entertaining.

It’s not just the Tennessee had a breakthrough season under head coach Josh Heupel. It’s that it showed just how explosive and fun it’s going to be for a long, long time.

It beat Bama, blew out LSU, and wasn’t totally awful in the loss to Georgia. Losing to South Carolina was bad, losing star QB Hendon Hooker to a knee injury was worse, but getting to the Orange Bowl is still a magnificent way to finish up the season.

There’s no Jalin Hyatt – the nation’s best receiver is getting ready for the NFL – and receiving mate Cedric Tillman is joining him, but the offense should still work and the defense is relatively intact.

– Clemson also gets back a ton of future NFL stars, especially on the offensive front. QB DJ Uiagalelei is gone to Oregon State, and losing pass rusher Myles Murphy and LB Trenton Simpson hurts, but this is QB Cade Klubnik’s offense to run and the next level would love to have the Tiger starting front four on D.

The Tigers would’ve been in the College Football Playoff had they beaten South Carolina – yeah, the CFP would’ve gone with a 12-1 ACC Champion over TCU and/or Ohio State.

Considering they way they buckled against the Gamecocks and got run over by Notre Dame, this – even more than the blowout over North Carolina in the ACC Championship – is the biggest moment for this year’s team. This will define the 2022 season narrative.

Dabo Swinney is amazing in bowl games. He lost his first two at Clemson – one of them was the 70-33 epic to West Virginia in the 2012 Orange – and has been 10-4 since with two of the losses coming in College Football Playoff National Championships and two others in CFP semifinals.

Tennessee won four straight bowls before dropping last year’s amazing 47-45 Music City to Purdue. Head coach Josh Heupel is 1-3 in bowl games – he was 1-2 at UCF before last year’s controversial loss with the Vols. The guy knows the Orange Bowl, though. He was the starting quarterback for Oklahoma in the 13-2 2001 BCS Championship win over Florida State.

The Orange Bowl has been wildly hit-or-miss. It was a dog as a College Football Playoff semifinal last year – a 34-11 Georgia win over Michigan that was over after a few drives.

Going all the way back to 1996, 19 of the last 26 have been decided by double-digits. That’s totally misleading – there were some classics in there – but the bowl deserves something wild. This might be it.

CFN Experts CFP, NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Clemson Will Win The Capital One Orange Bowl

If you want the Cade Klubnik national breakout party to begin – America’s attention wasn’t exactly on the ACC Championship when the Big Ten title game was going on at the same time – here you go.

DJ Uiagalelei struggled against North Carolina, Swinney made the call right away and put in Klubnik, and …. boom. 20-of-24 for 279 yards and a touchdown in the blowout.

Now he gets the Tennessee secondary.

At some point this year the Vols were going to pay for their problems on defense. Florida’s Anthony Richardson rolled for over 450 yards, Georgia’s Stetson Bennett had an efficient day in a win, and ol’ Bryce Young came up with 455 yards and was a Jahmyr Gibbs drop away from Bama probably winning in Knoxville.

But it was South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler who went totally bonkers with 438 yards and six touchdowns – and, most shockingly for him, no picks – in the 63-38 win.

Now it should be Klubnik’s turn against the fifth-worst pass defense in the country. That, and the ball control aspect to this game should matter.

Clemson doesn’t dominate the clock, but it should have the ball for at close to 35 minutes, mainly because Tennessee doesn’t care a lick about time of possession and was dead last in the nation at it.

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why Tennessee Will Win The Capital One Orange Bowl

For all the talent and all the NFL star power on the Clemson defense, it wasn’t all that hard to move the ball on this bunch.

Wake Forest did it through the air, Notre Dame did it on the ground, Florida State did it however it wanted to, and Spencer Rattler had himself a day against the Tigers right after he disposed of the Vols.

Oh sure, the superstars up front can get into the backfield and be disruptive, and the overall stats are fine, but for Tennessee it’s going to be about cranking up the running game for over five yards per carry and getting a monster day out of Joe Milton.

The former Michigan quarterback got the start for Josh Heupel last year, but he was quickly replaced by Hendon Hooker. Thrown into a tough spot when Hooker went down, Milton wasn’t bad with a few deep plays in the loss to South Carolina and was just fine in the blowout over Vanderbilt.

The spotlight will be on Klubnik. Milton has the arm and enough experience to be okay, but as long as he can get things moving with his legs along with his arm, and if the running backs can help the cause, the offense will keep moving.

Here’s the problem …

Why North Carolina Will Win

Here comes the passing game.

It struggled a wee bit over the last few games in losses to Georgia Tech and NC State, but Drake Maye and company should cranking it back up against a shaky Clemson secondary.

The ACC Championship and an Orange Bowl appearance are on the line. The offense will be pushing from the start.

Clemson might be loaded with NFL talent – the line has its share of next-level starters – but the pass defense couldn’t hold on against a hot South Carolina passing game last week allowing 360 yards in the stunning loss. It had a hard time against Louisville’s attack, got bombed on by Wake Forest, and got run over by Notre Dame.

Even with the problems of the last few games, North Carolina is still No. 1 in the ACC in total offense and scoring, averaging 481 yards and 37 points per game.

It’s doing this without a slew of turnovers – just two in the last five games – or penalties, and there’s a good chance the defense finally starts to take the ball away.

Forcing mistakes has been a problem for the Tar Heels, but Clemson can’t stop screwing up. The penalties have been kept to a bare minimum, but the O turned it over 15 times in the last five games.

If this is going to be a shootout, Clemson can’t blink.

However …

College Football Playoff Final Top 25 Prediction
What it means for CFP: Utah beats USC for Pac-12 title

Why Clemson Will Win

Even if the Clemson passing game struggles like it did against South Carolina, the running game should pick up the slack if needed.

DJ Uiagalelei didn’t get a whole lot of help from the receiving corps, but he wasn’t great completing just 8-of-29 passes for 99 yards with a touchdown and a pick in the loss. However, he ran for 51 yards, Will Shipley went off, and the round attack came up wit 237 yards averaging over six yards per carry.

Keeping the momentum going shouldn’t be a problem against the North Carolina defensive front.

The Tar Heels don’t get gashed too much, but they get picked apart with teams having no issues cranking up the carries because they can.

Six teams ran the ball 40 times or more against the UNC defensive front – all ran for 170 yards or more. Notre Dame was the only team that ran it more than 40 times against Clemson.

North Carolina is a dangerous team for Clemson because of the way it can throw and throw some more. On the flip side, it’s a great fit with no pass rush, no plays in the backfield, and almost no takeaways – the D hasn’t come up with multiple turnovers since mid-October.

The Tiger skill parts need all the time and room they can get. That won’t be a problem.

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Clemson is back in the ACC Championship.

The loss to South Carolina might have been a massive disappointment with a possible College Football Playoff trip still in play, but after missing out last year, Clemson has a chance to make it seven ACC Championships in eight years.

Of course the bar is set at a whole lot higher for the program, but being that dominant in conference play is amazing no matter what.

It’s going to take a lot of points to get there, though. This won’t be quite like the 51-45 Clemson win over Wake Forest, but it might not be far off.

North Carolina will get to 300 passing yards, the defense will give up over 450 yards of total offense, and it’ll be an entertaining back-and-forth fight before the Tiger running game takes over in the fourth quarter.

Why South Carolina Will Win

Can we all get that Spencer Rattler again?

The arm talent is undeniable and the next-level skills are all there, but he was a tad too tentative at Oklahoma and there have been too many misfires and picks and South Carolina so far. And then he got a hold of the Tennessee secondary, and … BOOM.

438 yards, six touchdown passes, no interceptions, 63-38 win.

It’s not like the pressure is off now going against Clemson in the big rivalry game, but that was a sigh of relief performance for the program. It knows it can win, it knows big things should be coming under head coach Shane Beamer, and it knows it has the passing game in this.

Clemson’s pass defense isn’t as rocky as Tennessee’s, but it’s been hit by teams that can throw – there haven’t been too many of them on the slate.

Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman went off for 337, and cranking up 200 yards hasn’t been a problem for just about everyone else who tried. But if that Rattler shows up, he’s the best quarterback the Tiger secondary has faced so far.

But …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Clemson Will Win

Here comes the Clemson pass rush.

The defensive line has hardly been a disappointment this year, but considering the NFL talent and skill up and down the line – even with some injury issues – it hasn’t been quite as dominant as it should’ve been. Now it gets to eat against a Gamecock offensive front that allows way too many plays in the backfield and way too much pressure on Rattler.

Forget where the expectations were set, it’s hard to argue with a defense that leads the ACC in tackles for loss and allows 104 rushing yards per game.

The offensive side should be okay. DJ Uiagalelei doesn’t have to force anything, the running game can take over – South Carolina was hammered against the run over the last three games allowing close to six yards per pop – and the defense will take care of the rest.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Which South Carolina shows up?

It’s not like it’s not fully focused and isn’t going to bust it, but this team has a way of occasionally falling very, very flat.

The turnovers that weren’t there against Tennessee will show up this week. The Tigers will come up with two takeaways – to offset their own offense’s two mistakes – the home crowd atmosphere and energy will be a big boost, and they’ll make it seven in a row in the series.

Why Miami Will Win

The defense has to rise up and come up with big plays and stops.

Coming up with a lot of takeaways hasn’t locked in wins, but Miami is 3-0 when coming up with three or more, and Clemson has been mistake-prone lately with four giveaways in the win over Syracuse, two in the loss to Notre Dame, and three in the win over Louisville.

On the other side, as long as the running game is at least serviceable, things might be okay. Miami doesn’t have to run for 250 yards, but hovering around four yards per carry is a must.

It’s a stretch to call the Clemson defensive front a disappointment, but for all the NFL talent it hasn’t been the rock it should be. Notre Dame was able to rip through for 5.6 yards per carry, and four times teams have been all to get past four yards per pop.

Miami is 3-1 when running for four yards per carry and 3-1 when it comes up with a rushing score, but …

Why Clemson Will Win

The Miami offense overall just isn’t consistent enough.

It’s not that great at grinding out the ground game, and the passing attack has been sketch with Tyler Van Dyke – who’s questionable for this, by the way – trying to get past a shoulder problem and freshman Jacurri Brown great against Georgia Tech and just okay when thrown into the mix against Florida State.

Clemson had a rough day at the office against Notre Dame, but it picked it back up with a great day on the ground in last week’s win over Louisville.

There are going to be misfires with the passing game – DJ Uiagalelei will have his moments both good and bad – but the offense will be balanced and …

What’s Going To Happen

Really, Miami can’t win this without a ton of turnovers. Clemson might give up a few, but at home it will be able to overcome the issues.

With South Carolina up next and the ACC Championship vs North Carolina to follow, the Tigers might be looking ahead a wee bit, but looks matter now. 12-1 with a Power Five championship – at least according to history – should be enough to get into the College Football Playoff, but now they need to look the part.

They’ll look good enough. Miami’s offense will stall way too often.

Miami is 0-5 when allowing more than 14 points, so …

Clemson vs Louisville Game Preview

Why Louisville Will Win

Louisville turned everything around in a hurry by taking the ball away.

It had a 2-3 record, the season was slipping into the abyss, and the offense couldn’t seem to come though in key moments. Turning the ball over nine times in the first four games was a big part of the problem.

And then the defense saved the day.

It wasn’t a rock, but it started taking ball away in bunches with 23 in a six game stretch. It didn’t come up with one against James Madison, but it didn’t need to in a dominant 34-10 win.

Clemson turned it over six times in the last two games, it’s been run over way too easily – Louisville’s ground game has been fantastic lately – and it’s almost certain to be a bit down after a rough day in South Bend.

However …

Why Clemson Will Win

Don’t count out the Tigers just yet.

No, losing 35-14 at Notre Dame didn’t do anything to help the College Football Playoff dreams, but there’s still plenty of time to get back on track. That was the last road game of the season.

This has been a rocky year with the team struggling way too much week after week, and then Notre Dame’s offense ran wild.

Yes, Louisville is running well, and yes, it has one of the nation’s best pass rushes to be disruptive. However, the Clemson defense might just raise up its play after all that happened last week.

The Cardinals haven’t faced lines like they’re about to deal with. They’ll get into the Tiger backfield enough to keep this close, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the Clemson ground attack.

It didn’t go anywhere against Notre Dame, but so far this year the problems on the ground have mostly come away from Death Valley. Again with the home side of things – Clemson should be far stronger energy-wise right out of the gate.

It’s Clemson – nothing is going to be easy – but the lines will look for redemption after that trip to South Bend. They’ll get it.
