Cardinals fall in new power rankings after loss to Eagles

The Cardinals have the third-highest ranking in the NFC West and fall to No. 18 after losing to the Eagles 20-17.

The Arizona Cardinals are now 2-3 on the season after a 20-17 loss at home to the 5-0 Philadelphia Eagles. They held the Eagles to their lowest offensive output of the season, both in yards and points, and could have sent the game into overtime had kicker Matt Ammendola not missed a 43-yard field goal with 22 seconds left in the game. `

But even with the tough, competitive loss to the Eagles, the Cardinals fell two spots in the latest power rankings from Touchdown Wire’s Mark Lane.

After being No. 16 last week, they enter Week 6 at No. 18.

The Cardinals have one more week to endure until Kyler Murray can start getting reinforcements. The matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles would have been interesting to see if the Cardinals indeed had those weapons. The NFC West is still not out of reach with the Los Angeles Rams tumbling.

The Cardinals face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6 and have the chance to be 3-3 in the six games they play without receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who has been serving a six-game PED suspension.

Entering the season, a 3-3 record with the schedule the Cardinals had to start the year seemed like a longshot and here they are, despite having scored exactly zero points in the first quarter this season.

The Eagles maintain the No. 1 spot in these rankings.

As for the rest of the NFC West, the 2-3 Rams are the highest-ranked team at No. 13, followed by the division-leading 49ers at No. 14. The Cardinals are 18th and the Seahawks are 27th.

Justin Pugh goes off on those blaming kicker for Cardinals’ loss to Eagles

Pugh interrupted Matt Ammendola’s postgame interview to make it clear the one play was not the reason for the loss.

The Arizona Cardinals’ 20-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles will be remembered for the 43-yard field goal that kicker Matt Ammendola missed in the final seconds. Had he made it, the game likely would have gone into overtime.

Naturally, the reaction from fans is to blame Ammendola for missing the kick and to suggest he should be cut immediately.

Ammendola spoke to reporters after the game about the missed kick. He said it felt good off his foot and that he would have to look back at the tape to see what went wrong.

In the middle of his postgame interview, offensive lineman Justin Pugh interrupted with some strong words for reporters and likely fans. He also had words of encouragement for Ammendola.

“It’s not one (expletive) guy,” Pugh said. “I missed a block. We missed touchdowns. We should have had the ball and been able to score. It’s not on one (expletive) guy.”

He then told him to “keep (his) (expletive) head up” so that they can rely on him another time.

Pugh had his teammate’s back. He didn’t like seeing reporters waiting to talk to the guy who missed the kick. He was clearly fired up about the loss, as were many of the Cardinals players.

Ammendola was not the reason the Cardinals lost, but he did not make the kick to keep them from losing.

That is frustrating, for sure, but Pugh wasn’t wrong when he attempted to deflect some of the blame from Ammendola for the results of a very disappointing finish.

6 things that went wrong at end of Cardinals’ 20-17 loss to Eagles

Matt Ammendola missed a potential game-tying 43-yard field goal but a number of things went wrong for the Cardinals in the final minutes.

The Arizona Cardinals suffered a gut-wrenching 20-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday afternoon at State Farm Stadium. After another slow start, they rallied to tie the game and put themselves in position to tie it at the end of regulation.

However, in the end, kicker Matt Ammendola, signed at the beginning of the week to replace Matt Prater, who was out with a hip injury, missed a 43-yard field goal wide right that would have likely sent the game into overtime.

That wasn’t the only thing that went wrong at the end.

There were several things that didn’t go the Cardinals’ way — either mistakes or things that just went wrong.

They face an Eagles team that averaged 28.8 points a game and have not had fewer than 24 in any of their four games.
