Eagles name Jalen Hurts starting QB vs. Cardinals in Week 15

Eagles HC Doug Pederson makes the announcement on Monday after looking at the film.

The Arizona Cardinals will face a rookie quarterback making his second career start. When the Philadelphia Eagles come to town this week, it will not be Carson Wentz under center. Head coach Doug Pederson announced Monday that Jalen Hurts, who started in Week 14 and led the Eagles to a 24-21 victory over the New Orleans Saints, would again start.

“After going through the film and looking back even to last week and the preparation and everything, I’m going to continue with Jalen this week as the starter,” he said in Monday’s press conference.

Pederson was non-committal on Sunday when he was asked about it immediately after the game. He said he didn’t want to make a quality performance by a number of individuals to be made just about Hurts.

“I was thinking about the rest of the team and how the rest of the team played in the game,” he said. “After looking at the film again, Jalen played well. He was a big part of the success we had on offense and obviously helping us win that football game.”

Against the Saints, Hurts completed 17-of-30 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown. He also added 106 rushing yards on 18 attempts.

Cardinals will face depleted Eagles secondary in Week 15

Rodney McLeod and Avonte Maddox are out. Darius Slay is un the concussion protocol.

The Arizona Cardinals have had to deal with a number of injuries on defense this season. They will face a team in Week 15 with a series of recent injuries. The Philadelphia Eagles will be down at least two starting defensive backs and perhaps a third.

Starting safety Rodney McLeod will miss the rest of the season. He suffered a torn ACL in the Eagles’ Week 14 win over the New Orleans Saints.

They also know for certain they will be down one of their starting cornerbacks. Avonte Maddox suffered  a knee injury against the Saints, exiting the game in the second quarter. Eagles head coach Doug Pederson told the media on Monday Maddox would miss some time and would not play against the Cardinals.

No. 1 cornerback Darius Slay suffered a head injury on Sunday. Pederson said he is currently in the league’s concussion protocol.

If he is unable to play, the Eagles will be down their two top cornerbacks and their top safety.

The Cardinals should be able to do some damage in the passing game.

As the coronavirus surges in the state, the team closes the final two games. Season ticket holders were only able to attend three games this season.

As cases of COVID-19 surge throughout the nation and in Arizona, the Arizona Cardinals have made an announcement about the remaining home games on their schedule at State Farm Stadium. The team announced Friday that their final two home games — Week 15 against the Philadelphia Eagles and Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers — will be closed to the public.

That number was increased to 4,200 for the games against the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills.

The home opener had no fans at all and the other games were limited to close family of players and staff.

Eagles bench Carson Wentz in favor of Jalen Hurts

The Arizona Cardinals are slated to be Hurts’ first NFL road start in Week 15.

The Arizona Cardinals will play the Philadelphia Eagles in two Sundays in Week 15 at home in State Farm Stadium and very likely will be facing a rookie quarterback. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Philadelphia has decided to make Jalen Hurts their starting quarterback this week against the New Orleans Saints in Week 14.

The move sends Carson Wentz to the bench.

Philadelphia is 3-8-1 and Wentz has struggled. He has a league-high 15 interceptions in 12 games and has been sacked a league-high 50 times. He has been sacked on over 10% of his dropbacks this season.

Unless Hurts gets injured against the Saints, Hurts will make his first road start in the NFL against the Cardinals. The Eagles play at home this weekend.

Hurts has seen spot action in 11 games this season. He has rushed 17 times for 82 yards and has caught one pass for three yards.

Before coming into the game to relieve Wentz in the Eagles’ 30-16 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Hurts had thrown three passes and completed them all, one each in three different games.

Against Green Bay, he was 5-for-12 passing for 109 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He was sacked three times.

He was a fantastic player in college, playing three years for Alabama before transferring to Oklahoma for his senior season. In 2019, he passed for 3,851 yards, 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions, and he rushed for 1,298 yards and another 20 touchdowns.

He was drafted 53rd overall in the 2020 draft by Philadelphia.
