Rookie QB Clayton Tune to face impressive Browns defense

The rookie’s first NFL start comes against the league’s No. 1 defense.

The Arizona Cardinals face the Cleveland Browns on Sunday in Week 9 and will have fifth-round rookie quarterback Clayton Tune in the starting lineup. Making his first NFL start, he will be immediately tested.

Cleveland’s defense is impressive.

They are No. 1 in total defense, allowing only 260.0 yards per game. They rank No. 1 in pass defense, allowing only 163.3 yards per game and seventh in rushing defense, giving up 96.7 yards per game.

They allow 19.9 points per game, 12th in the league.

They have 20 sacks as a team, led by Myles Garrett’s 8.5, which is fourth in the NFL and 1.5 behind the NFL leader, Minnesota’s Danielle Hunter.

Their passer rating allowed is 78.9, fifth-lowest in the league.

Their rush defense is not elite. They allow 4.0 yards per carry and have allowed seven rushing touchdowns this season.

The Cardinals will need a great showing by Keaontay Ingram and Tony Jones at running back.

Tune will have his work cut out for him.

Cardinals add WR Andre Baccellia, QB Jeff Driskel, RB Corey Clement to roster

The Cardinals add QB Jeff Driskel, RB Corey Clement and WR Andre Baccellia to the active roster for the game against the Browns.

The Arizona Cardinals announced three roster additions for their game on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Two were elevated from the practice squad and a third was signed to it.

For the second week in a row, the Cardinals signed receiver Andre Baccellia to the active roster, presumably because either Greg Dortch or Michael Wilson, both questionable to play, will be unable to go.

The Cardinals used their two practice squad elevations to add running back Corey Clement and quarterback Jeff Driskel to the roster.

Clement will be the third running back and play mostly special teams while Keaontay Ingram and Tony Jones handle offensive duties.

Driskel will be the backup quarterback to Clayton Tune. Driskel will be active for the first time as a member of the Cardinals.

A signing is different than an elevation because players elevated are reverted to the practice squad on Monday. A player signed remains on the roster unless released and would then have to clear waivers to re-sign with the practice squad.

The Cardinals and Browns kick off Sunday at 11 a.m. Arizona time.

Cardinals do not activate Kyler Murray from PUP for game vs. Browns

Kyler Murray’s 2023 debut will come in Week 10 against the Atlanta Falcons.

The 2023 debut of Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray will wait another week, as expected. The team did not activate him from PUP on Saturday, making him ineligible to play on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

He wasn’t going to start on Sunday anyway.

The Cardinals must activate him by Wednesday or he would be ineligible to play the rest of the season. All signs point toward a return to the lineup in Week 10 at home against the Atlanta Falcons.

Rookie Clayton Tune is expected to start on Sunday in Cleveland.

Murray tore his ACL last December, had surgery in January and has spent all season on PUP. He was designated to return over two weeks ago and has had three full weeks of practice. He will have eight games to play this season and show he is still the team’s franchise quarterback.

The Arizona Cardinals face the Cleveland Browns on the road in Week 9. They have lost five in a row and will have rookie quarterback Clayton Tune making his first NFL start.

They face the league’s No. 1 defense, one of the best pass rushers in the game in Myles Garrett and a very tough secondary.

The Cardinals’ defensive numbers aren’t good. Neither are the offensive ones.

Perhaps they can run the ball but they are down two running backs.

Clayton Tune expected to start for Cardinals vs. Browns

Tune will make his first career start in Cleveland for the Cardinals, giving Kyler Murray one more week before he returns.

The Arizona Cardinals did not announce who would be their starting quarterback on Sunday when they take on the Cleveland Browns on the road in Week 9. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said the decision would be made between activating Kyler Murray from PUP and starting him or going with rookie Clayton Tune by Saturday morning.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday that Tune is expected to get the start.

This matches what Schefter told ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss on Monday.

Tune will make his first career start. He has played one snap all season, a fake punt pas he completed for four yards.

If Tune starts, Jef Driskel will likely be elevated from the practice squad to be the backup. Murray will likely remain on PUP one final weekend before having to be activated by Wednesday.

It will be a tough game for Tune, who faces the league’s No. 1 defense, one of the league’s best individual pass rushers in Myles Garrett and will be without running backs James Conner and Emari Demercado, tight end Zach Ertz and might be without receiver Michael Wilson.

Cardinals injury report: Emari Demercado out, Kyler Murray questionable

Check out who won’t play and who might not play for the Cardinals on Sunday.

It sure sounds like Clayton Tune will start for Cardinals vs. Browns

There is no official word, but Tune sure sounds like he knows he is starting on Sunday.

The Arizona Cardinals have not announced who will be their starting quarterback on Sunday when they take on the Cleveland Browns on the road in Week 9. In fact, head coach Jonathan Gannon made it a point to say the decision would come after the team traveled to Cleveland.

However, it sure sounds like the starter will be rookie Clayton Tune.

That was the report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter earlier in the week.

Tune himself sounds like a guy who knows he is starting.

“It’s exciting to have this opportunity. Feel like I’ve been preparing the same way I have been all season. But you know, just excited for this opportunity to go out and give my team an opportunity to win,” Tune said to reporters this week. “Obviously, it’s a road environment, it’ll be wild, there’ll be a lot going on. So just gotta operate clean and efficiently and if given the opportunity, go out and make the most of it.”

Cardinals still mulling starting quarterback vs. Browns

Jonathan Gannon said that he decision to start Clayton Tune or Kyler Murray wouldn’t come until after the team left for Cleveland.

The Arizona Cardinals have wrapped up the week of practice and have released their final injury report of the week. Quarterback Kyler Murray, who participated fully in all practices this week, is officially questionable for the game.

But head coach Jonathan Gannon is not saying who his starting quarterback will be for Sunday’s game.

“We’ll see as the day goes,” he told reporters before Friday’s practice. “All three of them had a good week. We’ll see how the day goes and then we’ll make some decisions.”

When would that decision be coming?

“Probably in the plane or in the morning,” he said.

The Cardinals were to travel to Cleveland on Friday. The Cardinals have to decide by Saturday afternoon whether to activate Murray from PUP.

The Browns clarified their quarterback situation, announcing Deshaun Watson, who had been out with a shoulder injury, would start against the Cardinals on Sunday.

So based on what Gannon says, he doesn’t know whether Murray will make his 2023 debut or whether it will be the first career start for rookie Clayton Tune.
