Keaontay Ingram showed why he could be Cardinals’ No. 2 RB

In his first action of the preseason, he was one of the Cardinals’ bright spots in their loss to the Chiefs.

The Arizona Cardinals were quiet all offseason at the running back position. They brought back Corey Clement and added Emari Demercado as an undrafted rookie.

Expecting to rely more on the running back and with the history of missing games that starting running back James Conner has, it made sense to believe that they would add a veteran.

But maybe that was because they believe in second-year back Keaontay Ingram.

Ingram missed the preseason opener and much of training camp with some injury the team never disclosed (Pro Football Focus indicated once that it was an abdomen injury, but that is the only place I saw anything). but he returned to action and was a bright spot in the team’s 38-10 preseason loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday.

Ingram rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, he caught two passes for 20 yards and returned a kick for 13 yards.

His five-yard touchdown run was a display of effort and strength.

“I thought he looked good,” head coach Jonathan Gannon said after the game. “(He) made some runs and made a couple of guys miss. That touchdown run was pretty special so it was good to have him back in there. That was his first exposure in a live game. I know he was lathered up pretty good, he had a good attitude, he did a good job. And the O-Line did a good when they were in there with him. They opened up some holes and created some displacement.”

Ingram showed burst, strength and the ability to make guys miss.

He made plays in the passing game.

After last week in the preseason opener looked like they were missing something in the running game, if Ingram can keep healthy and look how he looked against the Chiefs, the Cardinals might be just fine with a running back duo of him and Conner for the regular season.

Cardinals’ starting defense was bright spot in loss to Chiefs

The starting defense has not allowed any points in two games and allowed only 17 total yards to the Chiefs.

In the Arizona Cardinals’ 38-10 preseason loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at home Saturday night, there weren’t a lot of things to be happy about.

They allowed 504 yards of offense. They did not take the ball away or have a sack on defense.

On offense, they mustered only one touchdown and 286 yards.

However, there was one clear positive and that was the Cardinals’ starting defense.

The defense only had all its starters on the field for two series.

In those two series, they forced a three-and-out, and they allowed only 17 total yards and one first down. The Chiefs had to punt on both possessions.

Once the Cardinals subbed out safety Budda Baker, linebacker Kyzir White, cornerback Marco Wilson and their starting outside linebackers, that was when the Chiefs started moving the ball.

In four defensive series in two games with the defensive starters (Baker and White did not play in the opener), the starting defense has not allowed any points.

It is a defense not expected to be very good. It is only two preseason games and four series, but it is something to look at with some level of optimism at this point.

Cardinals move around O-linemen in 2nd preseason game

The Arizona Cardinals had some offensive lineman swap sides in the game against the Chiefs.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon promised some changes on the offensive line. They happened in their second preseason game, although it was not with the starters.

The starting lineup remained as it has been since the offseason program. D,J, Humphries was at left tackle, Elijah Wilkinson at left guard, Hjalte Froholdt at center, Will Hernandez at right guard and Paris Johnson at right tackle.

The switches happened with the second team.

Last week, Kelvin Beachum played left tackle with the starters and Josh Jones played right tackle with the second unit.

Against the Chiefs, Jones was at left tackle and Beachum at right tackle.

The guards swapped sides as well. Dennis Daley, who played left guard against the Broncos, was on the right side.

Marquis Hayes started at left guard after playing on the right side last week.

The Cardinals’ offensive starters vs. Chiefs

The Cardinals sent out all their healthy offensive starters against the Chiefs on Saturday.

The Arizona Cardinals held out a few starters in their preseason opener last week. They did not in their second preseason contest on Saturday, facing the Kansas City Chiefs.

With the exception of quarterback Kyler Murray, who is ineligible to play right now because he is on PUP, and tight end Zach Ertz, who was just activated from PUP this week, they had a starting lineup that will resemble the one they send out in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders.

Here are the starters on offense for Arizona.

  • QB Colt McCoy
  • RB James Conner
  • WR Marquise Brown
  • WR Michael Wilson
  • TE Trey McBride
  • TE Geoff Swaim
  • LT D.J. Humphries
  • LG Elijah Wilkinson
  • C Hjalte Froholdt
  • RG Will Hernandez
  • RT Paris Johnson

Rondale Moore came in as a third receiver, replacing Swaim.

On their second possession, Zach Pascal also got snaps at receiver.
