Big Ten, Notre Dame & the College Football Playoff

How the Big Ten’s unique circumstance logically helps Notre Dame’s CFP argument in years to come.

The Big Ten is set to start their college football season in late October with games beginning the weekend of the 24th.  If Notre Dame plays like they’re capable of there is a great chance the Irish will be 6-0 before a Big Ten team even kicks off a game.

What a strange year.

The conference will also be playing an eight game schedule that is set to be released later this week and each team will play the team who finished the same spot in the standings as them in the other division during the conference title game (Ex:  second place Minnesota in the West would play second place Penn State in the East, third place Iowa would play third place Michigan State, and so forth).

Before things were called off and eventually put back on by the Big Ten, Ohio State was set to enter the year seemingly as talented as any team in the nation.  The Buckeyes will still be loaded, but will they be able to compete for a national championship?

May the best team win it all and if it’s Ohio State or someone else from the Big Ten then more power to them.

On thing to keep in mind with this each year going forward is something longtime NFL scout Greg Gabriel brought up today:

It ends up that it won’t be just seven or eight games, but instead nine. However, it’ll still be two fewer games played than the 11 the SEC Champions will have played and will be fewer than the 12 the ACC Champion will have played and 11 the Big 12 champs will have participated in.

I say that to say this:

When things get back to normal and we don’t have to scurry to see teams and conferences throw together a season due to a pandemic, don’t bring up the lack of a conference championship game in your case against Notre Dame not deserving a potential College Football Playoff spot ever again.

One less game didn’t matter before, it shouldn’t matter in the case of Ohio State or any other potential unbeaten Big Ten champion this year and it shouldn’t matter going forward, either.

When an extra game is actually just a way to distract from the likes of New Mexico State, Georgia Southern and Northwestern State being one of the 13, then it’s not a point that carries any actual weight.

If Ohio State, Penn State or Wisconsin go unbeaten this year they should be in the College Football Playoff, even if they play a game or two fewer than the ACC or SEC Champion or runners up.

Just like if Notre Dame goes unbeaten with their annual schedule, they should be in the College Football Playoff annually even if they play one less game than some.

Now can we keep that same logic now going forward?

I’m Nick Shepkowski and I hope you enjoyed my Ted Talk.

Don’t Feel Sorry for the Big Ten or Pac-12 Now

college football never left, only certain conferences and teams did

Let me preface this by saying that I feel awful for the student-athletes that lose a football season, some the last they were ever supposed to play, with almost half of college football calling off the 2020 season and I feel bad for the coaches who don’t get to spend the fall game-planning as well.

But I don’t feel sorry for the Big Ten, specifically those in the most power of the conference.

Ari Wasserman does a great job covering college football for The Athletic.  So great in fact that he just received a well-deserved promotion in becoming their national college football recruiting reporter.

But.

There’s always a but.

His suggestion that those who didn’t prematurely cancel college football for 2020 couldn’t possibly be a worse thought.

Wasserman is certainly right that it would be better if all teams and conferences were included, certainly.

But it’d also be better if the world was empty of hate, if everyday was 75 degrees and sunny with a very slight breeze and if your childhood pet lived forever.

Unfortunately that isn’t the case for any of those.

Let’s start by recognizing that if something doesn’t ever leave then it is impossible for it to come back.

If I never leave my house to go to the office then I can’t possibly come back home from being at the office. Simple enough, right?

College football, for 76 of 130 FBS programs, was never canceled.  Perhaps delayed a couple of weeks but it was never called off.  In other words – college football never left, only certain conferences and teams did.

The Big Ten felt the need to try and force the hands of the other Power Five conferences to join them in calling football season off.  God forbid the others think on their own (save the Pac-12) and figure out a way to salvage the season.

If I decide on my own that I’m going to show up for work late on Monday and not be present for my first meeting, do I just get to tell my boss to hold up and wait for me until I’m ready for it to get started?

If my best friend is getting married and I decide to leave my house late to get to the chapel, when I walk in after his bride has already walked down the aisle do I get to push open the doors and demand the restart the entire service?

The Big Ten presidents and Kevin Warren were the ones that rushed to a decision while business owners in college towns nationwide wondered to even a greater extent how they’ll survive this fall.

The Big Ten presidents and Kevin Warren felt the need to be first to cancel out of conference games, which forced the MAC’s hand and then first to call off the entire 2020 season.

The Big Ten presidents and Kevin Warren made those decisions almost a month before the season was scheduled to kickoff and thought because they’re the Big Ten, that everyone else would just follow their lead.

Again, this flat out sucks for the student athletes it effects, especially those who won’t have a senior season as a result.  The best thing I can say to them is that it’s not their fault and hope their respective conferences can get their acts together sooner rather than later.

The Big Ten, Pac-12, MAC and Mountain West all made theses beds.

Sure, it was the University presidents and not those in the athletic departments making those calls in several cases, but these decisions were made unnecessarily early.

Just over a week ago Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren doubled down on the conference’s decision, saying their postponement of fall sports “will not be revisited”.

Nobody told the Big Ten University presidents that a decision had to be made on August 11.

Nobody told the Pac-12 that they had to follow suit just hours after the Big Ten made their announcement.

The Big Ten presidents and Kevin Warren made their bed.

As did those in the Pac-12.

Now it’s not the ACC, Big 12, SEC, AAC, Conference USA or Sun Belt’s responsibility to have to sleep in it.

Notre Dame Football: Report suggests more annual ACC games to come

Both Notre Dame and ACC have a football fling, but neither appear racing to change their Facebook relationship statuses, either.

If you’ve followed us at Fighting Irish Wire at pretty much any point over the last year or so you’re aware that we refer to Notre Dame’s football relationship with the ACC as a “friends with benefits” situation.

Notre Dame gets six games annually but keeps their independence while the ACC gets Notre Dame on the schedule for six of their teams each year.  The Irish then belong to the conference for every other sport the rest of the year.

Both Notre Dame and ACC have a football fling, but neither appear racing to change their Facebook relationship statuses, either.

According to a report from SI’s Wolverine Digest, Notre Dame staying at six games with the ACC when things return to normal, might not be a given.

From the Wolverine Digest report:

“Notre Dame really wanted to play and was willing to enter into an agreement that could lead to something down the road … at the very least, more games every year against ACC teams,” an insider shared. “They’re adamance about playing was the ace-in-the-hole a group, led by Clemson, needed to really push for a season and turn the tide in favor of ignoring the Big Ten.

“I mean, if Notre Dame, with their academic reputation and their national brand, was willing to go forward … it sort of just sealed the ACC’s fate.”

– Wolverine Digest Staff Report 8/26/2020

There isn’t clarification as to whether that means simply adding a seventh ACC game to Notre Dame’s schedule soon or if it means that Notre Dame has promised to join the conference as a full-time member down the road.

Is the entire ACC only on board with playing football in 2020 because it means that Notre Dame MIGHT one day decide to lose it’s independence?

That seems a bit far-fetched to me.

For instance – if Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Florida State are that set on following the Big Ten’s lead, Notre Dame offering to play more ACC football down the road makes them change their beliefs?

I’m not buying it.

There are a lot more questions from this report than there necessarily are answers – one being why Notre Dame pushing for football, something the Michigan football program is said to have also wanted for this season, is another reason to hate them like this piece flat-out says:

And if you’re looking for another reason to hate Notre Dame, now you have it.

-Wolverine Digest Staff Report 8/26/2020

I won’t sit and question the entire validity of the report, they’ve got to have someone in Chicago and Ann Arbor like they say, if they’re willing to go to press with this.

However, to me this feels like this is written a lot more as a piece trying to throw a life-raft to the Big Ten and its commissioner for the conference overestimating it’s own power than actually accepting any blame for a decision that is only being questioned more and more by the day.

What I do know is that Notre Dame seems a lot more open to the idea of one day joining a conference than it ever has been, but that that decision is anything but imminent, too.

This is compelling and thought-provoking, no doubt – I’m just not too certain it all adds up.

Stay tuned to Fighting Irish Wire for anything else that develops off of this and everything else related to Notre Dame as always.
