Why Ball State Will Win

The offense should be fantastic.

The Cardinals were No. 1 in the MAC in total offense and scoring, and they’ve got the pop to set a pace that Miami won’t be able to deal with. The RedHawks have good offensive parts, but they didn’t do a whole lot to turn it loose – they might have to Wednesday night.

Drew Plitt is a solid veteran quarterback, the running game will be among the MAC’s best, and as long as the line can keep the passer upright, this thing will move. Again, MU has some decent players, but it has a long way to go offensively after finishing 122nd in the nation in total offense. However …

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Why Miami University Will Win

Once again, Miami will have one of the MAC’s best defenses. It might lose a few key tacklers, but this group will still get into the backfield on a regular basis against this Ball State offensive front.

The secondary is going to be fantastic, and the linebacking corps is good enough to hold its own against the run. It’s the other side that should be the key.

No, Miami isn’t going to wing the ball all over the yards, but Ball State has a questionable pass rush and isn’t going to be great on third downs. MU will be great at controlling the clock and the tempo.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Ball State will be one of the more interesting teams in the MAC. If the offense can just get up right away, the veteran defense should be able to come up with just enough stops to get by. However, MU will show off more of a passing game than it did throughout last year.

The Cardinals won 41-27 last year, but things will flip. Brett Gabbert – Blaine’s brother – will work well with the veteran receiving corps and all of the team’s experience to take the opener.

Big Ten Cancels Fall Season. What’s Next For College Football?

The Big Ten has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The Big Ten has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The Big Ten is going to do it. It’s going to cancel its 2020 college football season.

[jwplayer CKtYFVZx]

It was rumored to happen for the last few weeks, and now it’s actually happening the Big Ten is cancelling college football for the 2020 fall.

The details of what’s next are still sketchy, but commissioner Kevin Warren has been hinting at the idea of a spring football season. Forgetting that it would mean two college football seasons in ten months, and that college football in Minneapolis and Madison would be delightful in February, there aren’t any details yet on how that might work.

This all started rolling over the weekend with reports of a meeting among conference presidents about the viability of a college football season, and then Monday morning the Dan Patrick Show went with the story that the Big Ten was going to shut things down.

In the end, it was just too much. The Big Ten types have been hinting from the start that they didn’t believe they could safely make it all work. There were liability concerns, player safety issues, the lack of revenue from no fans in the stands, and then when it finally came time to practice and get it all going, the college presidents couldn’t make it work.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget the player movement side of things. Squashing the demands and the voices of players isn’t a bad thing for those who run the higher-levels of college athletics.

The Big Ten just gave the whole #WeWantToPlay movement one giant, “bless your heart.”

And now, very predictably, college football gets politicized. What could possibly go wrong?

What’s next for college football coming in a moment …

MAC Cancels Football Season. What Does It Mean For The Rest Of College Football?

The MAC has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The MAC has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The MAC becomes the first conference to cancel the college football season, at least for the fall.

[jwplayer muPr0F4N]

The MAC announced on Saturday that it’s cancelling/postponing all fall sports due to the COVD-19 concerns. There’s a thought the league will try to play in the spring, but that’s not a huge part of the discussion at the moment.

The MAC had several issues go against them. The main issue was the concern over keeping the players safe, and part of that came with the cost and the resources to adequately test as needed. The other big problem was the Big Ten’s decision to go to a conference-only schedule.

11 MAC games vs. the Big Ten were affected by the scheduling change. In all, the MAC was expected to lose the paychecks from as many as 21 non-conference games. Every conference is different, but the lost revenue side of those games was devastating.

It might be a bit of a cynical overstatement to say that the MAC would still have fall football if the non-conference games weren’t cancelled, but that certainly – at the very least – tipped the scales. Combine the lost revenue with the massive health concerns, and there was a “what are we doing here?” aspect to the MAC”s decision.

There’s the idea that the MAC will play in the spring. In a perfect world, the rest of college football is able to play and figure out how to do this, and the MAC has the spotlight to itself and gets back some of the lost revenue – and does it all safely – through March and April.

And now all eyes turn to the Power Five conferences. Remember, every conference is different, every conference has a different power structure, and every conference has a different revenue stream for football to work off of. However …

Watch out for the Big Ten. Its season has been hanging by a thread for the last several weeks, and while there seemed to be hope after a schedule was announced, the training camps have changed the dynamic. Many teams aren’t practicing full out over concerns for player safety.

Basically, college football doesn’t have a plan. It didn’t create a real plan over the last four months, it didn’t get creative in figuring out whether or not players could play safely, and the sport kicked the can down the road as far as it can go. Now the season is here, and now the sport is realizing how hard it is to ethically and practically play college football. With that said …

No, the college football season isn’t done yet. Even if the Big Ten decides to follow the MAC’s lead, no matter what the optics, the SEC, ACC and Big 12 will still likely do everything humanly possible to play. However, it’ll be a bad, bad look if other conferences try to push things to the spring and everyone else doesn’t follow suit.

So let’s say the other conferences do play. Get ready for the transfer portal to be loaded with top MAC players. Buffalo RBs Jaret Patterson and Kevin Marks, UB DE Malcolm Koonce and LB James Patterson, Toledo RB Bryant Koback, Western Michigan defensive front seven stars Treshaun Hayward and Ali Fayad, and Miami University OT Tommy Doyle are Power Five starters if they choose to leave.

Through all of this, just remember, this will go by in a hurry. There will be college football again, even if it’s not everywhere for right now.

2020 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Jaret Patterson, Jr. Buffalo

It’s not just Patterson.

Give junior Kevin Marks a little credit – a lot of credit, actually – for being more than just a No. 2 guy in the Buffalo offense with close to 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns over the last two seasons. Great in the rotation, he’s able to keep Patterson fresh.

The MAC is loaded with terrific backs this year, but the 5-9, 195-pound Patterson is the star of the bunch coming off a 1,799-yard, 19-touchdown season. He’ll catch a little bit, but one of the toughest pound-for-pound runners in college football – he carried the ball 181 times over the final six games with 15 touchdowns – is there to take over the offense and make it his.

2020 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Treshaun Hayward, Sr. Western Michigan

The guy found his stride after being an okay backup in his first two seasons.

The 6-1, 225-pounder turned into the best player on a solid Western Michigan defense, coming u with 142 tackles with 4.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss as he seemed to get in on every play.

Consistently great, he came up with ten tackles or more in nine games including an 18-stop performance against Eastern Michigan, and he turned into a rock in the open field.

Watch out for teammate Ali Fayad to be in the mix for the MAC Defensive Player of the Year with his pass rushing ability, but Hayward should be in for a special season again.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Ball State Cardinals Offense 3 Things To Know

– The offense couldn’t quite do enough in three brutally close losses, but Ball State was No. 1 in the MAC in offense and scoring, averaging 463 yards and 35 points per game. The running game was good, the passing game was better, and now there’s a lot to like with a ton of talent returning.

CFN in 60 Video: Indiana Preview
[jwplayer wf9Enzmh]

The passing game was fantastic as Drew Plitt grew from a part of the puzzle to the bomber who threw for close to 3,000 yards with 24 touchdowns and seven picks. He can run a little bit – he ran for five scores – but he’s a passer. Sophomore John Paddock didn’t see too much time, but he’s used to being in the No. 2 role.

A few of the key receivers from last year are gone, but 5-9, 181-pound speedster Justin Hall is back after leading the way with 684 yards and six scores. He’s the smallish, quick target, and 6-3 junior Yo’Heinz Tyler is the big playmaker, averaging close to 19 yards per catch with five scores. Throw in the return of Antwan Davis for one more year, and the receivers are there to crank up the yards for Plitt.

Pass protection was a problem for the Cardinal offensive front, but the running game blasted out close to 220 yards per game. Three starters are back, but all-star Danny Pinter is gone at one tackle spot. 6-5, 304-pound Curtis Blackwell is the strongest blocker of the bunch at his right guard spot, and the left side is set, too.

5-10, 226-pound senior Caleb Huntley carried the ground game with 1,275 yards and 12 scores in a brilliant Second Team All-MAC season.

Receiver Justin Hall is the second-leading returning rusher with 726 yards and two scores, but Huntley needs more rest. That’s where 236-pound sophomore Tye Evans comes in to bring some thump, and junior Will Jones should help a bit.

Ball State Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Best Case Scenario

8-4: Ball State gets past Wyoming at home for a decent 2-2 start, and then comes the big early statement with a win at Buffalo to kick off MAC play. With home wins over Northern Illinois and Akron, it becomes the story of the early part of the conference season, and it survives the run of three road games in the final four dates with two wins – including at Toledo – to take the West.

Ball State Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Worst Case Scenario

3-9: There are too many problems on the road. The Cardinals lose to Buffalo, Miami University, Central Michigan and Toledo to go along with losses to Michigan and Indiana to make going bowl game a stretch. The season ends up worse than expected with home losses to Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.
