Celtics trade ideas: Jaylen Brown for Anfernee Simons and Portland’s No. 3 pick

Is such a move even necessary so soon, or is this a panic trade?

With the arrival of the NBA’s 2023 offseason, you can expect a bevy of trade proposals from fans and analysts looking to play armchair general manager in pursuit of improving the Celtics’ roster to contend for a title next season.

In the latest episode of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast, the crew talks about the offseason, the league’s new collective bargaining agreement, and the potential cap situation with Jaylen Brown being eligible for a nearly $300 million supermax contract extension just a season ahead of Jayson Tatum being eligible for an even larger extension.

If — for one reason or another — the Celtics move on from Brown, what are some of the deals they could or should pursue?

First on the docket is a trade suggested by The Ringer which would send Jaylen Brown to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons and the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft. Would the Celtics do this deal? The gang discusses in the video embedded below.

Should the Boston Celtics pursue Chris Paul if he is waived by the Phoenix Suns?

Would it mean the Celtics would move on from one of their guards?

As the 2023 NBA Finals take place without the Boston Celtics, the rest of the league waits to kick off their offseason and retool their rosters. One of those teams, the Phoenix Suns, is looking at making some big moves with their roster, including potentially waiving veteran point guard and former superstar Chris Paul.

While toward the tail end of his Hall of Fame career, CP3 is still an elite playmaker in short bursts and arguably a top-five floor general in the history of the NBA. In the event he is waived, should the Celtics try to court the veteran? Would it mean the Celtics would move on from one of their guards?

Join the hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast as they discuss and debate a potential move for Chris Paul in the clip embedded below.

Damian Lillard confirms he’s out on a deal to Boston, and Jayson Tatum gives him grief about it

Lillard found himself getting some fun poked at him by Boston Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum for his stance on not wanting to be dealt to the Celtics.

On a recent Instagram Live session put together to respond to comments made by Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes on the “Courtside Heat” podcast about his future with the Portland Trail Blazers, Damian Lillard found himself getting some fun poked at him by Boston Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum for his stance on not wanting to be dealt to the Celtics.

Tatum expressed amusement at Lillard’s seemingly anti-Boston stance. While the Blazers star reportedly considered teams such as the Miami Heat as a potential destination, Boston was not among his preferred choices.

The confirmation of Lillard’s lack of interest in joining the Celtics from the man himself might have crushed some fans hopes for such a deal becoming reality, but it was likely a long shot even if the Portland star wanted to be dealt to Boston.

All of the best of ‘Shaqtin’ a Fool’ for the NBA’s 2022-23 season

The Celtics make an appearance in it alongside their Atlantic Division rivals, the Philadelphia 76ers.

By now, if you have not seen an episode of the “Shaqtin’ a Fool” segment put together for former Celtic Shaquille O’Neal while watching the Hall of Fame big man on the call for an NBA game, we have to wonder if you might have just emerged from cryonic sleep or some similar time-distorting device.

The wildly popular segment poking fun of some of the zaniest moments to be seen on a basketball court in the league has had another annual compilation assembled for the 2022-23 campaign, and the Celtics make an appearance in it alongside their Atlantic Division rivals, the Philadelphia 76ers.

You might already be able to guess the moment in question even based on those sparse clues given the hilarity of the moment.

But just in case you can’t, take a look at the clip embedded above to see it for yourself, along with much of the funniest moments on the hardwood last season.

Former Boston point guard Gary Payton, Sr. believes an NBA return to Seattle is coming soon

“”I think we have got a good chance of getting (an NBA team in Seattle) back in 2025-26,” said Payton.

Quite a few members of the wider Boston Celtics family have ties to the Pacific Northwest, from Bill Russell, Dennis Johnson and Bill Walton up to Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley and many others.

With rumbles of expansion rippling through the league and Commissioner Adam Silver strongly hinting that adding teams to the NBA is just beyond the process of wrapping up a new media rights deal, a return of the NBA to the state of Washington seems the most logical next step to take.

One person interested in seeing a revived Seattle SuperSonics franchise is former Celtics defensive menace Gary Payton, Sr., who recently spoke with Sports Illustrated’s Landon Buford about such a prospect and Silver’s words to such an end. “Silver is great as a commissioner, he knows what he’s talking about,” related Payton.

“We have already done the collective bargaining agreement; now we have to deal with the TV deal, which will be next year,” he continued.

“I think we have got a good chance of getting (an NBA team in Seattle) back in 2025-26, and it will be there,” the former Celtics guard suggested.

“I’m not worried about that. I think Seattle is the first one on the list of getting an expansion team, and it should be that way.”

Should the Boston Celtics have traded Jaylen Brown for Kevin Durant?

Some analysts are pondering whether the Celtics should have traded Jaylen Brown for KD when they could have.

At the end-of-season presser, Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens expressed a strong desire to keep star wing Jaylen Brown on the team. However, tension between Brown and the Celtics still seems to exist, possibly related to previous trade rumors that connected him to now-Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant as a potential trade option.

It could also be related to the fact that a small but vocal subset of analysts and fans have been putting Brown into every trade machine they see after the Georgia native’s tough showing in the 2023 East finals, but it could also simply be a product of Brown staying quiet about a supermax extension he doesn’t want to lose leverage with.

Some of the weird vibes from the end of the season had the hosts of the Athletic “NBA Show” podcast pondering whether the Celtics should have traded Jaylen Brown for Kevin Durant when they had the chance.

Check out the clip embedded below to hear where they came down on Brown’s future in Boston.

How new CBA could force the Boston Celtics to make tough roster choices sooner than later

The new CBA introduces punitive measures that make it difficult for high-spending teams like the Celtics to maintain their competitiveness.

The NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement poses serious team-building challenges for the Boston Celtics at a critical moment in the franchise’s pursuit of another title, potentially leading to it to make tough roster decisions sooner rather than later to dodge the worst of those penalties early in what remains of the team’s contention window.

The new CBA introduces punitive measures that make it difficult for high-spending teams such as the Celtics to maintain their competitiveness and retain their talent over time. But Boston has a shot at getting the team both better next season and better positioned to avoid those penalties in the short term.

NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg recently linked up with cap expert Ryan Berardoni to talk over all of the above.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear what they have to say about Boston’s choices this offseason.

Do the Boston Celtics need a new point guard?

Could it make more sense to try and go the point Tatum route?

Do the Boston Celtics need a new point guard after most of a decade with the role never firming up under any one player over time?

On one hand, the team’s offense lacked structure, and Marcus Smart’s role as a playmaker needs to be better defined if he is going to continue as Boston’s lead floor general.

On the other hand, star forward Jayson Tatum has been seen as a capable offensive creator and could grow into a point forward type of role similar to how Luka Doncic plays with the Dallas Mavericks. Could it make more sense to try to go the Tatum route?

The hosts of the Athletic “NBA Show” sat down to talk it over.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear where they came down on the issue of who ought to be manning the point for the Celtics moving forward.
