Army vs Navy Game Preview

Why Army Will Win

Army does what it does better than Navy does what it does.

The Navy ground game is terrific, but Army’s has been far more effective. Granted, the stats are a tad skewed when you’re rolling against UMass, Bucknell, and UConn – but also ran wild for 416 yards on Wake Forest and was just effective enough against Wisconsin’s No. 1 run D to keep the game close late.

Actually, the Black Knights stayed alive against the Badgers by throwing the ball on a fourth quarter drive. They were able to throw a bit against Wake Forest, and they got past Air Force by winging it around for over 200 yards.

Navy can hit the big play down the field, but again, Army does this better.

The biggest difference, though, is the speed of the option attacks. Navy allows way too many plays behind the line, and Army doesn’t allow anything in the backfield.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 14

Why Navy Will Win

It’s not like Army is that much more effective than Navy.

Again, the overall stats, style, and records are a tad skewed because of the schedules. Army was able to beat WKU and Georgia State early in the season, and it rolled through Liberty, but it lost the two games against Power Five teams and the Air Force win was an overtime nail-biter that could’ve gone either way.

Navy? It pushed Cincinnati. It dealt with Notre Dame, and it had to face an American Athletic Conference slate. No, it wasn’t like playing in the SEC West, but there wasn’t the fluff like Army got to fatten up on.

Army is the 11th bowl bound team Navy will face. At least according to the official NCAA Toughest Schedule Report, Navy played the third-toughest schedule in the country – it’s based on cumulative wins and losses.

Army? 93rd.

Yeah, Army might be a bit more effective in the key areas Navy has to be great in, but it’s not like the game is going to get out of reach.

Even if the Knights get up, this is going to be a low scoring, ball control game with the Midshipmen getting plenty of chances to go on a drive or two to take over.

Navy can run the ball, too.

What’s Going To Happen

Army is off to the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl to face Missouri after this. Navy will be done.

As always with the service academies, it’s going to be a low scoring game that will go by in a blink – the clock will never stop with the two ground attacks doing what they do.

Navy is a wee bit more about power and Army is a wee bit more about speed, but it’ll end up coming down to the three passes Army will complete that Navy won’t.

Army vs Liberty Game Preview

Why Army Will Win

What happened to the Liberty offense?

It’s experienced, QB Malik Willis is red hot on the NFL scouting circuit, Hugh Freeze knows how to coach up attacks, and …

It just fizzled last week in an ugly 42-14 home loss to Louisiana.

Liberty has been able to beat UMass, North Texas, and that’s about it over the second half of the season. there’s a turnover problem, the defense has been just okay, and Army should be able to take advantage of all of it.

The Knights are DESTROYING teams in the time of possession battle – even more than usual – leading the nation by holding the ball for close to 37 minutes a game. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Liberty Will Win

Liberty really is better than it’s looked over the last month.

The run defense has held up well, the offense is good at holding on to the ball and controlling the clock on its own, and there should be enough pressure from the defensive front to at least keep Army’s ground attack from taking full control.

Willis has the downfield passing ability to push Army’s secondary just like Wake Forest did in its 70-56 win, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, Army has been strong …

Against Bucknell, UMass, UConn, and a whole slew of mediocre teams. It beat Air Force in overtime, but that’s against a mirror image team – those games are always low scoring and close.

Liberty hasn’t been playing all that well, but the offense will take over in the second half to overcome the 250 yards from the Army ground game. Willis and this group won’t lose the regular season finale.

Army vs UMass Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

UMass has a whole slew of issues, and doing anything against anyone’s passing game is front and center.

Not an issue in this.

It’s a lost year with a new coach coming in for 2022 – there’s truly nothing to lose in this if the team wants to take a whole slew of chances.

Army doesn’t force takeaways, the defensive front doesn’t get into the backfield, and UMass has a way of keeping control of games just enough give the defense a little bit of a rest.

There’s a decent running game that should be able to come up with a few good drives, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Army Will Win

Army should be able to do whatever it wants with the running game.

UMass hasn’t been all that bad against the run, but that’s partly because it went against a few FCS teams and UConn. Army’s No. 2 running game – Air Force leads the nation – hit 400 yards in two of the last three games and should be able to roll at will.

But Army can throw just a little bit, too. It’s not going to go airborne too often, but against the nation’s least efficient pass defense, there should be two big plays.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

It all depends on how much Army wants to keep it all rolling. The problem is that there’s no way to not slow down what it does – what is it supposed to do, throw to try to be nice?

UMass couldn’t hold up against Rhode Island and Maine, and now it’s about to have a long afternoon against the Black Knight option attack.

Army vs Bucknell Game Preview

Why Bucknell Will Win

The Bison don’t often beat themselves.

There aren’t a lot of penalties, they don’t have a massive turnover problem, and they’re decent at finishing off drives they get the chance – at least over the last few games.

To have any chance in this, they have to be at least +2 in the turnover battle. The problem for Army is that the defense doesn’t take the ball away. Bucknell has to force a few fumbles – it’s good at coming up with recoveries – and has to take advantage of every opportunity because …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Army Will Win

You know how most football teams like to score points? Yeah, Bucknell doesn’t really do that.

The Bison offense failed to score more than six points in four of the fist five games and average just 9.8 points per outing. That’s one side of the ball

The run defense is a bigger problem.

There aren’t any plays behind the line and the run defense struggles to come up with stops. Army should be able to run at will.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Coming off the win over Air Force, Army busted through a three-game losing streak and now can become bowl eligible win.

This will be a scrimmage.

Bucknell doesn’t control the clock, can’t score, and it doesn’t holt up against the run. Army will go on a few long marches to control the game from the start. It’ll be over by halftime.

Army vs Air Force Game Preview

Why Army Will Win

The Army rushing offense is still the Army rushing offense.

It was great to start, it struggled – by Army’s standards – against Ball State with just over 200 yards, and he was stuffed by the great Wisconsin D. 416 yards on the ground against Wake Forest later, it’s back to doing what it does.

Air Force is amazing at controlling the clock. It’s second in the nation in time of possession – Army is No. 1, and by a whopping two-plus minutes a game.

Air Force is amazing against the run. It’s allowing just under 100 yards per game – Army is better, allowing 93 yards per game.

On the flip side …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Air Force Will Win

Air Force has a better all-around defense.

Yeah, Army might be great defensively, but it only stopped a slew of mediocre running games – Wisconsin was able to run for close to 200 yards.

Air Force has stuffed a few strong ground games – it kept San Diego State to 157 – and it already dealt with an option attack holding Navy to just 36 yards in a dominant 23-3 win.

Of course, neither side is all that great at throwing the ball, but Air Force does it a wee bit more. For those few times either side goes up top, the Air Force secondary is stronger.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be a low scoring game – as always.

These two always place close, tight battles that come down to a few mistakes and a few key stops. These two do the exact same thing – with slightly different styles – but the main different will be the takeaways.

Air Force has forced 11 turnovers, Army has forced six – with just one in the last three games – and at home, Air Force will get that one extra stop.

Wake Forest vs Army Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Wake Forest offense should have enough consistent pop to force Army out of its comfort zone.

WKU didn’t get its passing game going until late, Wisconsin didn’t get its passing attack going at all, and no one else on the slate has shown enough offense to bring a whole lot of push.

Wake Forest has been a 400-yard total offense machine after shutting it down after getting up big in the opener against Old Dominion. The attack works fast and should be able to push the Army secondary for a full 60 minutes.

The Demon Deacon defense is outstanding at getting into the backfield, it’s excellent at forcing takeaways, and …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Army Will Win

The Army ground game will work.

Wake Forest gave up 354 rushing yards in the tough win over Syracuse, and allowed over 200 yards to the Louisville ground game the week before.

Army might have had a hard time running against the killer Wisconsin run defense, and the team lost when it didn’t dominate Ball State, but it should be able to control the clock – it’ll hold the ball for at least 38 minutes – and it’ll own third downs, but …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

For this all to work, Army really has to dominate on the ground.

It’s 4-0 when running for 250 yards or more, and 0-2 when running for fewer.  Wake Forest has only allowed more than 210 rushing yards once, and it has the passing attack to strike quickly and keep the Black Knight offense on its toes.

Wisconsin vs Army Game Preview

Why Army Will Win

Outside of the top teams with the elite talent, few teams are better suited to deal with the Wisconsin slow style.

The Black Knights certainly don’t have the Power Five-caliber guys, but they do what they do, they hold the ball for forever, and they do it all really, really well.

Wisconsin has to win games through control. When things are working like they’re supposed to, it dominates the time of possession battle – Army leads the nation, holding the ball for over 40 minutes a game.

Wisconsin has to win the turnover battle. It’s 130th in the nation in turnover margin and Army is third in turnovers lost.

Wisconsin has to run the ball well. Army is third in the nation in run defense – UConn is the only team to come up with more than 48 yards, and it ran for 116.

This is a Badger team hanging by a thread. It’s coming off a dominant win over Illinois, but this 2-3 group can’t pull through the slightest bit of in-game adversity. The last thing it needs to deal with the knuckleball of an Army O.

However, on the flip side …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Wisconsin Will Win

There’s no team better suited to handle Army.

For a Badger squad that’s struggling overall, it does one thing really, really, really well.

Army’s offense and style can surprisingly shock and produce against just about anyone, but its No. 3 run defense produced against Georgia State, WKU, UConn, Miami University, and Ball State.

Wisconsin’s run defense?

It’s No. 1 in America, and it went against Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame, Illinois, and Eastern Michigan.

The Badgers just held Illinois to 93 yards of total offense and 26 on the ground. It’s an ultra-disciplined group that should be able to force several 3rd-and-long situations – a killer for this Army attack.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Size isn’t an issue for this Army defensive front seven. There’s just enough bulk to avoid being blasted early, but this is about to be a grind.

The little that Army uses its passing game won’t work at all outside of one deep shot out of the blue, and the running game will only have a few decent drives.

Over the long haul of the 60 minutes, the Badgers will pound and pound and pound, they’re not going to take any unnecessary chances, and they’ll rely on best run defense in college football to get out of this dangerous game alive.

Army vs Ball State Game Preview

Why Army Will Win

Can Ball State stop the run?

That’s always the question when it comes to facing Army, and it’s not really fair since it brings a totally different style of attack.

However, the short answer is that Ball State has struggled so far up front – getting beaten on by the Penn State and Toledo defensive fronts – and it’s not doing enough to get into the backfield to stop the big plays before they start.

And then there’s the real issue – time of possession.

That’s the biggest problem when dealing with the Black Knights. Either you’re able to control the clock or not, and that’s not really what Ball State does.

Army has hit 300 yards on the ground in each of the last three games, but …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Ball State Will Win

Ball State has too much experience to be this mediocre.

The losses to Wyoming and Toledo were galling, only because those were teams that 2020 Ball State beats. The parts are still there, and the passing game should be much more dangerous than it’s been – it just all has to start to work.

Army has had a strange letdown problem late in games lately, but that’s always when it has things won. Ball State has to keep the game close enough at home so that it has a chance to win the fourth quarter.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The problem is that Ball State just isn’t scoring.

It hasn’t come up with more than 13 points in any of its last three games with the offense suffering a massive power outage on the ground.

The Cardinals aren’t controlling games well enough to combat the Army offense that’s predictable, but unstoppable.

Army vs Miami University Game Preview

Why Miami University Will Win

Can Miami University stop the Army running game? Short answer … sort of.

It’s got the veteran linebackers who should be able to stay in their lanes and be coached up enough to deal with what’s coming, and the line proved against Minnesota it can hold up to and smashing style.

This group can get behind the line – it’s among the MAC’s best teams at generating tackles for loss. There should be plenty of big plays to get to the Army option before it gets started, but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Army Will Win

No, really. Can Miami University stop the Army running game? Short answer … probably not.

The Army ground attack is working against everyone.

Georgia State, WKU, and UConn aren’t brick walls, but it doesn’t matter. The Black Knights were able to get the timing down over the first three games and should be able to control the game from the start. Miami University doesn’t do much in the time of possession battle, and it messes up just enough to matter.

Army doesn’t get flagged, doesn’t turn the ball over, and it holds the ball for 41 minutes a game. All of that has to change for MU to win.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Army has a weird way of getting hot early and then sputtering. WKU and UConn were both able to put up points late, but they didn’t matter.

Miami has a balanced enough offense to keep this close – it was able to throw a heck of a scare into Minnesota – but it won’t hold up in the second half as Army goes on one big long scoring drive to finally take over.

Army (2-0) vs UConn (0-3) Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

So is ANYTHING working here?

UConn started out the season getting rocked, the Randy Edsall era was over, and it responded by being nothing more than a light snack for Purdue in a 49-0 loss last week.

There’s a running game hidden among the problems, but it hasn’t emerged yet. No one has been able to get going, and Kevin Mensah has been bottled up from the start, but the Huskies have enough decent options to try pounding away.

The one plus is the ability to get behind the line. The defense isn’t bad at generating tackles for loss – seven per game – but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Army Will Win

UConn is having issues against the run. That’s not a positive against Army.

Even with the ability to get into the backfield from time to time, the defensive front isn’t holding up against anyone who’s trying to run. It’s not getting totally destroyed – allowing 4.3 yards per carry – but that’s partly because the first three teams on the slate spent too much time throwing.

Army is totally on its game, tearing through Georgia State and WKU for a total of 600 yards and eight scores in the first two outings. Inside and out, the option is dominating.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not just the running game for Army. The defense is holding up, doing just enough to survive the new and improved WKU passing game helped by the O holding the ball for almost 40 minutes a game.

Army will run for well over 300 yards, the defense will be far better on third downs than it was last week against the Hilltoppers, and the great season marches on.
