Arkansas State vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The O will get going from the start.

The defense might not be doing a whole lot of anything, but the passing game should hit 300 yards, and the team is a wee bit rested with nine days off since pushing Louisiana way too hard in a 28-27 loss.

Layne Hatcher doesn’t throw interceptions, he’ll drive the ball down the field, and now he and the attack should be give South Alabama’s secondary all it can handle.

The Jaguar defense has been solid all year, but it’s coming off a rough day in a shootout loss to ULM – it gave up 369 yards through the air – and hasn’t played a whole slew of high-powered passing teams.

This is the most dangerous O USA has faced, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why South Alabama Will Win

This is the worst defense South Alabama has played.

Arkansas State is dead last in America in total D, allowing 579 yards per game, and it’s not getting better.

The Red Wolves allowed 540 yards or more in every game since the opener against Central Arkansas, and now they have to deal with an effective and efficient South Alabama passing attack that’s been terrific over the last few weeks.

The Jaguar ground attack doesn’t do a whole lot, but this is the game to take the pressure off of QB Jake Bentley. The Arkansas State defensive front allowed 200 rushing yards or more in every game but the opener, and gave up over 1,200 yards on the ground over the last three outings.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas State played one of its best games of the season last week against the Ragin’ Cajuns, and it should give South Alabama a hard time in a bit of a shootout.

ULM doesn’t have the most dangerous of attacks, and it went off on the Jaguars last week. However, as always, Arkansas State will put up a ton of yards and points, and its opponent will do a little bit more.

It’ll be a whole lot of fun. Arkansas State games usually are.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Louisiana vs Arkansas State Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

Is that the real Louisiana?

It had a rough start in the loss to Texas, and it didn’t exactly rip through an easy part of the early slate with close win after close win – the blowout over Ohio aside.

But the running game was okay as the first half of the season went on, and the wins were there to mask the other problems, and then, out of the blue … bam. The Ragin’ Cajuns pulled off their best performance of the year by a mile, rolling through Appalachian State 41-13 in a game that was over about six minutes in.

By the way, Arkansas State is totally miserable against the run.

Everything started out fine against Central Arkansas, but everyone else came up with 200 rushing yards or more in the five-game losing streak.

If it’s possible to hit the 200-yard rushing mark on the first drive, Louisiana might do it against this D. But …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas State Will Win

It’s not like Louisiana has faced a who’s who of top passing attacks after starting the season against Texas.

The offenses that could throw a little bit were able to do it, but there were issues against South Alabama and a Nicholls State attack that rolled for close to 360 yards through the air.

No, Arkansas State doesn’t do much on D, but the passing game would be able to start bombing and keep going against a Ragin’ Cajun secondary that’s been good, but is about to be pushed harder than it has all year.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not like Arkansas State doesn’t have talent.

Yes, the defense has been bad, and yes, it’s been a rough start to the Butch Jones era with five straight losses after the opener. But there might be a reason for that …

Memphis, at Washington, at Tulsa, at Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina.

The Red Wolves either played teams that were better, or lost a tough road game, or both.

That doesn’t excuse a D that’s had such a rough time, but as good as Louisiana has been, it’s playing someone its own size at home.

It’ll be a good battle, but the Arkansas State defense won’t be able to get the job done when it needs a few big fourth quarter stops.

Coastal Carolina vs Arkansas State Game Preview

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

This isn’t exactly working like it’s supposed to for Arkansas State.

It was coming off a bad 2020, but head coach Butch Jones was a good hire to help change around the defense all while keeping the O going and …

Nope. The D has allowed 52 points or more in three of the last four games, the team is dead last in total defense, and it’s not able to keep up with an offense that lost its running game because the passing attack has to spend so much time bombing away.

Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina just keeps on humming along, ripping through everything in its path.

No. 1 in the nation in third down conversions, No. 1 in passing efficiency, and without a whiff of any pressure so far outside of a road date with Buffalo, both sides of the ball are humming.

The Chanticleers won their last two games by a combined score of 112-9. However, those two games were against …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas State Will Win

UMass and ULM.

Yeah, beating Buffalo 28-25 on the road was nice, but Coastal Carolina has gotten nice and fat on a schedule full of NO ONE.

Kansas? Nah. Citadel, UMass, and ULM?

It’s not like Arkansas State is crushing it at 1-4, but at least it played Washington, Tulsa, and Georgia Southern on the road after getting into a firefight with Memphis.

Yeah, the D is struggling, but the O is keeping things moving through the air. Averaging 379 yards per game, ASU should be able to make this fun, but …

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Coastal Carolina is playing too well.

QB Grayson McCall has this attack humming. He’s not missing, the O is ripping through everyone to put games away fast, and against a team that’s getting hit for over 260 rushing yards per game, it’s all going to look pretty on a national stage.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arkansas State vs Georgia Southern Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The offense has the ability to oubomb Georgia Southern.

Both teams might be 1-3, but the Red Wolves are scoring and the Eagles aren’t. The problems with ASU are on the other side of the ball, but the quarterbacks are pushing the ball down the field – and not screwing up – averring over 360 yards per game.

Georgia Southern is having a huge problem in the secondary – everyone is fattening up, averaging over ten yards per throw against a pass defense allowing 328 yards per game – but so is Arkansas State. The difference? Arkansas State can take advantage of it.

However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Georgia Southern might finally get its own passing attack working.

It’s Georgia Southern, so in a perfect world it would love to run well and controlling the game with a versatile way of getting the backs going. However, Justin Tomlin is a good all-around quarterback with the potential to do far more.

The Eagle pass defense is bad, but Arkansas State has the nation’s worst defense, the nation’s worst pass defense, and it’s allowing over 42 points per game with Washington the only Power Five team on the slate so far.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas State head coach Butch Jones isn’t going to have a bad defense for forever, but it’s not going to get stronger overnight.

Georgia Southern isn’t going to have a bad offense for forever, and it will improve now that it’s playing against the ASU defense.

Not only will Arkansas State get the O going a better, but the D will take the ball away. The Red Wolves have eight takeaways in the first four games. The Eagles have forced as many turnovers as you have.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arkansas State vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The Red Wolves ran in to a brick wall of a Washington defense that finally started playing up to its talent, but for the most part the offense has been great all year.

It cranked up close to 600 passing yards in the loss to Memphis, it pushed past 500 yards of total offense against Central Arkansas, and the parts are there to crank it back up against Tulsa.

The quarterback combination of James Blackman and Layne Hatcher is working, the downfield plays are there, and there aren’t a ton of mistakes to give away a ton of points.

However …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Tulsa Will Win

The Arkansas State defense that was a problem throughout last year continues to be an issue.

Washington’s offense didn’t do anything over the first two games, and then it came up with 600 yards against the Red Wolves a game after Memphis put up 680.

It’s only three games in, but ASU has the second-worst defense in America, and Tulsa should be able to take advantage.

This isn’t a high-powered Golden Hurricane O, but the passing game rolled against Ohio State last week with Davis Brin bombing away for 428 yards in the loss.

Arkansas State will give up yards any way Tulsa wants to take them, and …

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Golden Hurricane defense is just good enough to come up with a few stops needed to get through this alive.

Arkansas State will come up with enough offense to keep this interesting, but the defense will get hit hard by a balanced day from the Tulsa attack.

It’ll be an off-the-radar game that should be a whole lot of fun.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Washington (0-2) vs Arkansas State (1-1) Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The offense has been a whole lot of fun so far.

The Red Wolves have always had a good attack, but last week they blew up for 582 passing yards in the 55-50 loss to Memphis. They’re going to bring the big plays against a Washington team that desperately needs anything to work offensively.

This isn’t how it was supposed to go for the Huskies.

The defense was miserable against the Michigan running game, but it held Cade McNamara to 44 passing yards with 33 of those coming on one play. However, that happened because the Wolverine offense didn’t have to press – the UW offense wasn’t going anywhere.

This week, former Florida State QB James Blackman and veteran Layne Hatcher will each get their turns trying to keep the pressure on Washington to crank up the O.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington Will Win

Enough is enough, Washington.

The offensive line hasn’t even been close. This was supposed to be a tough running team that controlled games and then relied on the defense to do the rest.

This week, a win is a win is a win no matter how it happens, and it has to start with the passing game. Dylan Morris hasn’t been anything special so far, but he’s going against a secondary that struggled against Central Arkansas and got ripped to shreds by Memphis.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

As bad as the start has been, Washington has all of its realistic goals still on the table.

The College Football Playoff is gone, but the Pac-12 season hasn’t started yet. This is too good a team with too much strength on the lines to be this bad.

Arkansas State won’t be able to do enough with the passing game to overcome a breakout day from a Washington offense that’s going to do everything it can to establish the ground attack. When that doesn’t work, it’ll throw for over 300 yards.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Memphis (1-0) vs Arkansas State (1-0) Game Preview

Why Memphis Will Win

The defense might have been a tad iffy against Nicholls in the 42-17 win, but the offense showed it could move on from the Brady White days.

New starting QB Seth Henigan wasn’t razor sharp, but he hit enough downfield plays to be fine. The running game took care of the rest with over 300 yards, and there really wasn’t any drama even though the D gave up some yards.

Arkansas State might have a good defensive front, but the Tigers should be able to run the ball just enough to keep on hammering away. Slow and steady isn’t how the Tiger O works, but in this case, the trickle could lead to a waterfall – the big plays will be there as the game goes on.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas State Will Win

Butch Jones got his first win as the Arkansas State head coach with a 40-21 day against Central Arkansas, and it helps that he has his quarterbacks to carry the load.

While former part-of-the-puzzle QB Logan Bonner left with Blake Anderson to Utah State, former Florida State starter James Blackman stepped up and showed he’ll be just fine under the new coaching staff. Layne Hatcher was even better, making all 12 of his throws for 150 yards and four scores.

The Red Wolves have the lines to hold up against the Tigers, the defense is going to be improved under Jones as the season goes on, and there might just be the right mix to pull this off it the D can keep the big gashes to a minimum.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be fun.

With all the positives and good things happening in the Sun Belt, it’s almost like Arkansas State has been forgotten about. Jones has the pieces in place to make a whole lot of noise, and pulling off a win over the Tigers would be massive.

It’ll be a back-and-forth game with the Arkansas State quarterbacks playing a bit stronger than Henigan, but Memphis will come up with a few more big plays to get out alive.

In a season full of low scoring battles so far, hope for this one to go back-and-forth for a full four quarters.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arkansas State (0-0) vs Central Arkansas (0-0) Game Preview

Why Central Arkansas Will Win

The Bears bring the defensive intensity.

They scored a bunch in 2020 – the passing game is effective enough to keep pushing – but they roll with their pass rush. They’re going to once again be great at getting into the backfield, and that’s when the mistakes come.

Central Arkansas was No. 1 in the FCS in 2020 in takeaways, generating 23 turnovers highlighted by 14 takeaways. The pass rushing combination of Jason Bedell inside and Logan Jessup on the outside should give the Red Wolves fits. But …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas State Will Win

New head coach Butch Jones gets a good O line to work with.

The Red Wolves have the quarterbacks – Florida State transfer James Blackman and Layne Hatcher should both see work – and the receiving corps should be able to crank up the production against the aggressive Bear defensive backs.

Central Arkansas has good parts on offense, but they’re not strong enough to take advantage of a reworked ASU D that should struggle, but will bring the head throughout.

Week 1 College Football Schedule

What’s Going To Happen

Central Arkansas is good enough to provide more than just a light scrimmage.

The Arkansas State offense will give up a few turnovers – UCA is all about the takeaways – but it’ll come through just fine as the game goes on to overcome the mistakes.

Jones will get his first win as the new guy, and at least for this week Arkansas State will show glimpses of being a team that – all of a sudden, and with the spotlight on so many other teams – could be a factor in the Sun Belt race.

2021 CFN Sun Belt Preseason Rankings: East

1. Appalachian State Mountaineers

Quick Take: Sort of lost in the fun of Coastal Carolina and Louisiana last season was how Appalachian State didn’t fall off – at least, it didn’t drop all that much. This year’s team should be back to its dominant, Sun Belt-championship-level self as long as the quarterback play is solid.
ASU Preview | Schedule

2. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Quick Take: There’s no reason to expect any semblance of a drop-off with QB Grayson McCall leading another loaded offense to go along with a defensive side that should be special in the back seven.
Coastal Carolina Preview | Schedule

[lawrence-related id=532457]

3. Georgia Southern Eagles

Quick Take: Can the quarterback situation settle itself fast? Shai Werts left for Louisville, but the ground game will be still be dominant and the defense could be the best it’s been in several years. If the Eagles don’t have the Sun Belt’s best secondary, they won’t be far off.
Georgia Southern Preview | Schedule

4. Georgia State Panthers

Quick Take: There’s only one major issue with the 2021 Panthers – the schedule. It’s going to be a fight to get to six wins and bowl eligibility, but the team has the offensive chops to hang around with just about anyone.
Georgia State Preview | Schedule

5. Troy Trojans

Quick Take: Welcome to your possible Sun Belt sleeper. Troy wasn’t bad last season, and now it should be a whole lot stronger with a great defensive back seven and enough good skill parts to be a problem for all the hot conference teams on the slate.
