Arkansas softball falls late against Florida – finale set for Sunday

A big sixth inning for the Gators broke things open.

Two outs, bases loaded. Games are won or lost in those moments.

For Arkansas on Saturday, the result was the latter.

The Hogs fell to Florida, 11-4, giving up six runs in the sixth inning, all of which came with two outs. The Gators’ win evened the series ahead of the finale from Bogle Park on Sunday.

The second biggest crowd in that park’s history watched Saturday. Hannah Camenzind gave up a single and allowed another base-runner to reach via error before striking out her next batter and inducing a flyout. But after another bean-ball, Florida loaded the bases.

Walk. Hit-by-pitch. Double. Single. Wild pitch. Walk.

Ball game.

Camenzind allowed five of the six runs, though none were earned.

Arkansas had taken a one-run lead in the second, 3-2, when Rylin Hedgecock was hit by a pitch. Florida then grabbed the lead for good in the fourth when Sarah Langley hit a three-run homer off Robyn Harron.

The teams are set to play the finale at noon.

No. 17 Arkansas softball knocks of No. 10 Florida at Bogle Park in Game 1

Hannah Gamill homered twice as Arkansas took down Florida at Bogle Park.

Arkansas softball’s fortunes may be turning.

After being swept by Texas A&M in their SEC opener, the Razorbacks took two of three from Alabama in weekend No. 2. On Friday, with No. 10 Florida in Fayetteville, the winning ways continued.

Hannah Gammill hit two home runs to lead Arkansas past the Gators, 6-2, in the series opener.

Gammmill’s first of the game came in the fourth. With Arkansas trailing 1-0, she tied things as the first batter of the inning. Cylie Halvorson then singled and advanced to second base on a passed ball, third on a wild pitch, then scored on a fielder’s choice. Atalyia Rijo knocked in the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly and the Razorbacks would not look back.

Chenise Delce pitched all seven innings, giving up the first run on a groundout and the second on an Arkansas error. The Razorbacks’ ace gave up five hits and four walks to go with her six strikeouts.

Gammill tacked on her insurance homer in the fifth, another solo shot.

The two teams are set for Game 2 at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Hedgecock homers in 10th to give Arkansas first SEC series win

Chenise Delce struck out two in a row with the bases loaded to finish off the complete game.

The weekend’s series between two top-10 teams in Tuscaloosa could play massively down the stretch in Division I softball.

It lived up to the billing, too.

Arkansas took the series, two games to one, over Alabama in dramatic fashion Monday. Rylin Hedgecock’s solo home run in the 10th inning proved the game-winner in the Razorbacks’ 2-1.

More than Hedgecock, though, Monday was about Chenise Delce. Arkansas’ ace last year had already lost more individual games this year than last, four to three, but her ancillary numbers have been arguably better. The results met up with them against the Crimson Tide.

Delce threw a complete game, all 10 innings, while giving up five hits and walking four. She struck out eight.

But she was in trouble in the 10th. After induced a flyout to start the inning, Delce gave up three straight singles to give the Crimson Tide the bases loaded with just one out. She then struck out two consecutive Alabama batters swinging to end things.

Arkansas is back at Bogle Park on the weekend when the No. 12 Razorbacks host No. 11 Florida for a three-game set.

Is it time to worry about the Arkansas softball team? Just a little?

They’ll make the NCAAs, almost certainly. But Tuesday’s loss to Wichita State was hard to watch.

Arkansas softball is good. Awfully good. They will make the NCAA Tournament barring a miracle.

One of the bad ones.

But right now, heading into a big weekend against No. 13 Alabama on the road, No. 12 Arkansas is looking at a tumble next week. A series loss to unranked Texas A&M followed by a 10-2 shellacking at the hands of Wichita State will do that. Nevermind the team’s loss to Central Arkansas last week in a game in which they scored just a single run.

Tuesday’s loss was the most troubling. All three Arkansas pitchers gave up runs, while starter Callie Turner didn’t manage to record a single out before being pulled. Wichita State tagged her for five runs on four hits – two of which were home runs – and a walk.

By the time the first inning finished, WSU led, 8-1. The Razorbacks scored first, in the top of the frame on a Rylin Hedgecock RBI double.

The only other runs scored in the whole game came in the sixth and final inning as Cylie Halvorson had an RBI single for the Razorbacks and Wichita State walked off via run-rule with two in the bottom.

Arkansas has some time to recover, at least. The Razorbacks play in Tuscaloosa from Saturday to Monday.

Razorbacks fall in finale against Texas A&M, lose series

Texas A&M jumped on Arkansas early to send the Hogs to a series loss in both teams’ SEC opener.

Texas A&M had just dropped out of the Top 25 softball rankings entering the rank. Odds are, the Aggies will be back next week.

Arkansas lost its opening SEC series Sunday when A&M rolled past the Razorbacks, 9-1, from Bogle Park, to win the series two games to one.

The Aggies jumped on Arkansas starter Chenise Delce for runs in each of the first three innings. They chased her in the third, ultimately scoring five runs in the frame to open a 7-1 lead.

It all came from the sticks as Delce didn’t walk a batter. Instead, A&M had 13 base knocks in the five-inning game, including solo home runs from Trinity Cannon and Morgan Smith.

Arkansas’ lone run came in the second. Already down 2-0, Kacie Hoffman and Lauren Camenzind hit back-to-back doubles to start the inning and Spencer Prigge followed with a walk. But A&M starter Emily Leavitt recorded a strikeout and two foul outs immediately after to limit the Razorbacks.

Arkansas is back for a tune-up Tuesday on the road against Wichita State before heading to Tuscaloosa for a three-game set against Alabama from Saturday to Monday against the Crimson Tide.

Kramer tabbed as SEC Player of the Week for Razorbacks

Slugging more than 1.500 will typically earn a player some dap. Raigan Kramer was an easy choice.

Monday’s loss to Central Arkansas was the bigger bummer, but the Razorbacks could be happy for their teammate that night, anyway.

Arkansas outfielder Raigan Kramer was named SEC Player of the Week for her run during the Razorbacks’ 6-0 run last week.

The sophomore had a slash line of .667/.706/1.583 in wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Iowa State and North Texas. She hit three home runs among her eight knocks and knocked 11 RBI to go with her 19 total bases, five runs, four walks and sacrifice fly.

Kramer became the third Arkansas softball player to be honored this season by earning the award. Chenise Delce was SEC Pitcher of the Week during the final week of February and Atalyia Rijo was SEC Freshman of the Week for the week of February 13.

Arkansas opens SEC play Friday at home against Texas A&M.

Sugar Bear Stunner! Central Arkansas stuns No. 7 Hogs in Fayetteville

Arkansas discovered leaving runners on-base is a bad idea no matter who you’re playing.

Central Arkansas softball is good. Not sure if the Sugar Bears are supposed to be that good, though.

UCA left Fayetteville on Monday evening in a stunned state and left the home team in a stunned state, too, as the Sugar Bears scored two runs in the sixth and held Arkansas off for the final six outs in a 2-1 shocker from Bogle Park.

The Hogs led 1-0 after the first inning when Rylin Hedgecock’s sacrifice fly opened the scoring. Turned out, it also closed the scoring.

Central Arkansas starter Jordan Johnson never the Diamond Hogs get going. She threw a complete game, giving up just the one run one five hits and four walks while striking out seven.

The hits and walks are evidence Arkansas had its chances. The Razorbacks had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, and final, inning. They also had the bases loaded with nobody out in the fifth. Each time Johnson worked around it.

The game was the last nonconference tune-up for Arkansas, which opens SEC play Friday against Texas A&M at Bogle Park.

Hogs softball beats North Texas on Sunday to sweep six games in Woo Pig Classic

In six games, Arkansas outscored their opponents 51-6.

One more warm-up is all the Arkansas softball team has before SEC play begins.

But the warm-up has been stellar.

The Razorbacks beat North Texas, 11-1, in five innings Sunday to take all six games of the Woo Pig Classic on the weekend. Arkansas beat Iowa State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and North Texas by a combined score of 51-6 from Bogle Park.

Raigan Kramer was the hero Sunday. The leftfielder went 2 for 2 with a walk, a home run, two runs and three RBI. Lauren Camenzind also hit a home run, hers opening the scoring in the second inning, a two-run shot to left-center that scored Kramer, as well.

Robyn Herron needed only work three innings as she struck out three and gave up two walks and a hit to pick up her sixth win of the year.

Arkansas will play its seventh game in five days Monday when Central Arkansas visits Fayetteville. The Razorbacks open SEC play Friday at home against Texas A&M.

Lefty freshman throws second complete-game shutout

The Razorback softball pitching staff is filled with stars, and one of them is a freshman.

The Razorbacks softball pitching staff is filled with stars, and one of them is a freshman.

Arkansas opened the Woo Pig Classic at Bogle Park with a 4-0 win over Iowa State.

Left-handed freshman Robyn Harris pitched seven innings against Iowa State and finished with 12 strikeouts, allowing only one run after facing 26 batters. It was the third time this season Harris finished with double-digit strikeouts. She only gave up a single in the fifth season.

The Hogs’ pitching staff has been lights out this week. Delce was named National Pitcher of the Week, leading a shut-out against Drake. As a staff, they have a 1.98 ERA and 136 strikeouts.

At the plate, the Hogs tallied four runs on 10 hits. Rylie Hedgecock hit a home run, her sixth of the year. Raigan Kramer also hit her second home run of the season.

The Razorbacks walk into the weekend on a five-game win streak. The Woo Pig Classic continues for the Hogs with a doubleheader on Friday and Saturday, including another game against Iowa State.

Razorbacks ace, Chenise Delce, named SEC Pitcher of the Week

The SEC named Delce pitcher of the week for her performance in the Razorback invitational last weekend, her third time receiving the honor.

Another day and another accolade for Arkansas ace Chenise Delce.

The SEC named Delce pitcher of the week for her performance in the Razorback invitational last weekend, her third receiving the honor.

Delce was 4-0, two of those wins coming from ranked Arizona. She finished the weekend with a .076 ERA and 25 strikeouts. Batters only compiled a .127 batting average and two runs during her 18.1 innings on the mound.

She leads the Razorbacks staff with seven wins, three against top 25 teams. She is on pace to eclipse her 2022 numbers, which earned SEC Pitcher of the year honors, her first season in the conference.

After spending three seasons in Tulsa, winning 15 in her first season, she has made a home in Fayetteville. Next for the Hogs and Delce is the Woo Pig Classic, which includes two doubleheaders.
