Razorbacks cap home tournament with win over Drake to go 5-1

Arkansas rolled to a shutout to take the Razorback Invitational on the weekend.

Defending Bogle Park will be one of the keyes to the Arkansas softball team’s season in 2023.

The weekend was a solid start to that end.

The Razorbacks won their home tournament, the Razorback Invitational, with a title-clinching win over Drake on Sunday afternoon, 7-2, in five innings. The victory made Arkansas 5-1 on the weekend with a three-game sweep over the Bulldogs and two wins over No. 19 Arizona.

Sunday’s capper was Arkansas’ from the word go.

Drake had just two hits off Arkansas starter Callie Turner through the first five innings while Hogs’ hitters scored five runs in the first two innings alone.

Rylin Hedgecock smacked a three-run shot in the first inning and Hannah Gammill had a two-run single in the second. Rylee Cloud and Hannah Camenzind had an RBI double and RBI single respectively in the fifth inning to cap things.

Arkansas is actually back at home on the upcoming weekend, as well. Iowa State, North Texas and Texas-Corpus Christi are all in Fayetteville for two games apiece against the Razorbacks for the Woo Pig Classic. The Hogs’ first game of the tournament is Thursday at 4 p.m.

Bingo, Bango! Arkansas wins doubleheader over Drake and Arizona

Arkansas scored a pair of one-run wins in dramatic fashion in Day 2 of the Razorback Invitational.

After splitting a doubleheader in the opening day of the Razorback Invitational on Thursday, the Arkansas softball team took both games of the doubleheader Friday.

The Razorbacks needed 11 innings, but knocked off Drake in the first of two games Friday, 4-3. They followed by taking the rubber match against Arizona, 2-1. The victory over the Wildcats gave Arkansas two in three against Arizona.

Rylin Hedgecock broke the 1-all tie the second game with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Chenise Delce came back out to the mound in the seventh and struck out the side, though Arizona did advance a runner to third base because of a single, a wild pitch and a passed ball.

The opener Friday was even more dramatic as Arkansas forced extra innings in their final chance in the seventh inning against Drake when Cylie Halvorson’s RBI single scored Hannah Gammill to tie the game at three.

Then, in the 11th inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, Halvorson singled to left field to score Lauren Camenzind for the game-winner.

Arkansas has two games remaining against the Bulldogs. The first is Saturday at 1 p.m. from Bogle Park and the finale is Sunday at 11 a.m.

No. 8 Arkansas splits doubleheader against No. 19 Arizona

Hannah Gammill’s walk-off earned Arkansas one win, but a big Arizona inning in the second game forced a split.

The first two games of Arkansas’ six-game weekend took place Thursday in Bogle Park as No. 19 Arizona played the eighth-ranked Razorbacks in a doubleheader.

Arkansas took the opener, 3-2, in walk-off fashion as Hannah Gammill’s RBI single scored Reagan Johnson in the bottom of the seventh.

Johnson had a bout of fortune as she had actually struck out to lead off the inning but reached first on a passed ball. After a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, she was on third base with two outs as Gammill stepped in.

Arizona had tied things in the top of the inning when Devyn Netz hit a two-run home run with just one out in the frame. Arkansas starter Chenise Delce allowed a single in the next at-bat before getting a strikeout and a groundout to keep the game tied headed into the bottom.

The Wildcats took the second game, 5-2. A four-run fourth inning saw Arizona bat around the lineup as Netz’s second homer of the day was the big shot of the inning. Arkansas had led 2-0 to that point.

The Razorbacks’ break is short as they’re back for two more on Friday. Arkansas plays Drake at 1:30 p.m. and follows with a final game against Arizona immediately after.

Arkansas to get two opponents in six games over four days on the weekend

Arkansas softball is set to host the Razorback Invitational at Bogle Park on the weekend.

The eighth-ranked Arkansas softball team has a big weekend ahead.

The Razorbacks will play six games from Friday to Sunday at Bogle Park as part of the Razorback Invitation. Arizona and Drake join the round-robin where each team will play the others three times.

Arkansas fell four spots from No. 4 in the country when the rankings were released this week. But it wasn’t exactly a hard fall. The Hogs lost to No. 6 Florida State and No. 15 Duke at the Clearwater Invitational before finishing the weekend with three straight wins.

Arizona is first on the slate for the Razorbacks on Friday. The first game between the two is scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday, then the two will play again immediately after the same day. Arkansas follows against Drake on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and will play Arizona immediately following. The home team will play Drake once on Saturday and again on Sunday to close the invitational.

The tournament is Arkansas’ third of the season. They’re the only kinds of games the Hogs will have played through the first four weeks, too, as Arkansas’ next weekend will be the Woo Pig Classic, again at Bogle Park.

But as the Razorbacks continue to get the reps in, Arkansas should be in good shape when SEC play rolls around March 10 against Texas A&M.
