Aggies QB competition adds candidate as Elko proclaims ‘Henderson is always ready to go’

Weigman entered the season as the Aggies starting QB but another injury to the incumbent has opened the door for multiple other candidates.

Junior quarterback Conner Weigman entered the season as the unquestioned Texas A&M starter but another injury to the incumbent has opened the door for multiple other candidates to emerge from the signal caller competition.

Redshirt freshman QB Marcel Reed is making a strong case after starting the last three games. However, Aggies head coach Mike Elko mentioned another option following a 21-17 win against Arkansas in the Southwest Classic at AT&T Stadium.

“We have great relationships in that room, in general. Jaylen Henderson is always ready to go, as well. We have three QBs we trust that can play. Marcel was the guy today,” Elko said yesterday. “Marcel is still growing. Still up and down moments with him. He is a young kid. For us to be an explosive offense, we need Noah (Thomas) to be a playmaker. It was great to get him in the offense today.”

Next up for No. 21 Texas A&M is a challenging SEC morning matchup against No. 11 Missouri. The Aggies host the Tigers at Kyle Field on Saturday at 11 a.m. on ABC.

Coach Elko has ‘built a culture of brotherhood’ at Texas A&M according to RB Le’Veon Moss

When Mike Elko replaced Jimbo Fisher as Texas A&M head coach, he created a culture of accountability by holding the team to a high standard.

When Mike Elko replaced Jimbo Fisher as head coach at Texas A&M, he created a culture of accountability by holding his coaching staff, players and himself to the highest standard.

In the process, Elko has also created a family environment in College Station. Following a 21-17 win against Arkansas in the Southwest Classic at AT&T Stadium, Aggies junior running back Le’Veon Moss spoke to the media.

“We are playing more together. He built a culture of brotherhood. It’s ‘Play for the man next to you.’ It’s a brotherhood. We stand strong together,” Moss said yesterday. “We pride ourselves on finishing the fourth quarter. That was the main focus, just finishing the fourth quarter.

“I knew my defense would get the stop, and we would run the clock out.”

Instant reactions to No. 24 Texas A&M football team win over Arkansas

The Aggies concluded the Southwest Classic era at AT&T Stadium on Saturday with a gritty conference win vs. Arkansas on national television.

The Texas A&M football team concluded the Southwest Classic era at AT&T Stadium this weekend with a gritty conference victory versus Arkansas on national television.

On Saturday afternoon at Jerry’s World in Arlington, the No. 24 Aggies (4-1, 1-0 SEC) won their fourth consecutive game with a 21-17 win against the Razorbacks (3-2, 1-1) on ESPN. The victory is Texas A&M’s 12th in the last 13 meetings versus Arkansas.

The conference contest looked like it would be a shootout initially as both teams scored on quick, three-play possessions to tie the score at 7-7 in the first quarter. The Aggies scored on a 58-yard touchdown pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Marcel Reed to junior wide receiver Noah Thomas.

Texas A&M knotted the score 14-14 early in the second period with a 5-yard rushing score from Reed that was set up with a forced fumble in the red zone by junior defensive lineman Shemar Stewart. In the final quarter, Reed threw a go-ahead 5-yard tuddy to senior tight end Tre Watson.

Next up for the Aggies is a challenging SEC morning matchup against No. 11 Missouri. Texas A&M hosts the Tigers at Kyle Field on Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. on ABC.

How the No. 24 Texas A&M football team defense can stop Arkansas in the Southwest Classic

The Aggies are heading 200 miles north to Arlington for their second SEC matchup of the season on Saturday against Arkansas at AT&T Stadium.

The Texas A&M football team is heading 200 miles north to Arlington this weekend for its second SEC matchup of the season on Saturday afternoon against Arkansas at AT&T Stadium.

The No. 24 Aggies (3-1, 1-0 SEC) will need a strong effort from their defense versus the Razorbacks (3-1, 1-0) to remain unbeaten in conference action. Texas A&M beat Arkansas 34-22 in the 2023 Southwest Classic.

A duo of upperclassmen defensive linemen with the same name, senior Shemar Turner and junior Shemar Stewart, each recorded a sack last week during a 26-20 victory against Bowling Green at Kyle Field. Aggies head coach Mike Elko and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman will be looking for similar production from the Shemar pairing on Saturday at Jerry’s World.

Texas A&M will be facing a familiar foe on the opposing sideline, Razorbacks offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, who was the OC and quarterbacks coach in College Station under former head coach Jimbo Fisher.

Experienced Aggies like Stewart and Turner should have an advantage versus junior QB Taylen Green after practicing against Petrino’s playbook in 2023.

Texas A&M battles Arkansas at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN.

The experts weigh in on the Texas A&M vs Arkansas matchup in Week 5

Texas A&M is a slight favorite in their Week 5 matchup against Arkansas at AT&T Stadium

Saturday marks the last time Texas A&M and Arkansas will play in the Southwest Classic in Arlington at AT&T Stadium. The Aggies have been the bully over the last 10 games with a 9-1 record.

This has the potential to be one of the games of the week. It’s not on par with Alabama vs. Georgia, but bragging rights are on the line, and Razorback coach Sam Pittman is in a make-it-or-break-it season. The Aggies are still working out something, and Arkansas is starting to come around on both sides of the ball.

Each team will come out of this game with a solid understanding of where they stand, as both teams have enough talent to press each other in all three phases. It’s a contest that’s too close to a call, and predictions will be mixed for the Aggies over the previous week.

Here is who the experts are picking to come out victorious in this week’s matchup:

Steven Lassan / Athlon Sports

Thomas Neumann / Athlon Sports

Pete Fiutak / CFN

Shehan Jeyarajah / CBS Sports

Richard Johnson / CBS Sports

As you can see, it’s a mixed bag, and as cliche as it might sound, this contest will probably just come down to who wants it more.

Texas A&M football team to travel the third furthest among SEC programs

During Mike Elko’s first year as the football head coach, Texas A&M will have to travel the third furthest among the 16 programs in the SEC.

During Mike Elko‘s first season as the football head coach in College Station, Texas A&M will have to travel the third furthest among the 16 programs in the Southeastern Conference.

According to bookies.com, the Aggies will rack up over 5796 miles this year traveling to only four road games. The only SEC squads that have to go further is LSU and Mizzou. The respective Tigers from Louisiana and Missouri each travel long distances for non-conference contests. Therefore, Texas A&M is traveling the furthest for its SEC games.

Texas A&M‘s longest route is 1847 miles to Columbia, South Carolina for a matchup versus the Gamecocks. The Aggies’ closest away contest is still pretty far, 967 miles away in Starkville against Mississippi State. Per BetMGM, Texas A&M has the eighth best odds to win the conference at +2000.

When it comes to the Aggies’ SEC opponents this year, they rank in the following order regarding miles traveled: LSU (1st), Mizzou (2nd), Texas (4th), Mississippi State (5th), South Carolina (8th), Florida (12th), Arkansas (13th) and Auburn (16th).

Texas Tech’s best hitter commits to Arkansas softball

Texas Tech’s Kailey Wyckoff announced her commitment to Arkansas softball on Sunday.

The Arkansas softball team added its first player via the transfer portal this offseason with the addition of Texas Tech’s Kailey Wyckoff.

Razorbacks coach Courtney Deifel hinted at an announcement in a social media post to X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday before Wyckoff made the announcement in her own post to X.

A left-handed batter, Wyckoff led the Red Raiders in hitting last season. She batted .407 with seven home runs, 12 doubles and 35 RBIs in 50 games (49 starts). She also had a 1.144 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging) and earned First Team All-Big 12 honors.

In 2023, Wyckoff was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year. She was also a top 25 NFCA/TUCCI Freshman of the Year and a D1Softball Freshman All-American. She batted .393 her freshman year with nine home runs, 17 doubles and 31 RBIs.

Wyckoff played games at catcher, first base and the corner outfield spots in 2024 with Texas Tech. The Red Raiders went 29-21 overall and failed to reach the NCAA Tournament.

Alex Collins, Dave Van Horn on Arkansas’ 2024 Hall of Honor list

Arkansas baseball coach Dave Van Horn and the late Alex Collins are two of the nine Razorbacks greats who will be inducted into the school’s Hall of Honor in 2024.

Arkansas baseball coach Dave Van Horn and eight former Razorbacks athletes across six sports are on the University of Arkansas’ 2024 Hall of Honor class.

An induction ceremony will be held at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville on Friday, September 13, the night before the Razorbacks play UAB at Donald W. Reynolds Razorbacks Stadium. The list of inductees was announced by the university late Tuesday.

Van Horn has been Arkansas’ baseball coach since 2003 and has led the school to seven College World Series and 20 NCAA Tournament appearances. Arkansas was the 2018 College World Series runner-up to Oregon State.

Among the eight former athletes who will be inducted into Arkansas’ 2024 Hall of Honor class is the late Alex Collins. Collins passed away at the age of 28 in 2023 and will be inducted posthumously.

Collins is second on the school’s all-time rushing list with 3,703 yards and 36 touchdowns in three seasons. A fifth-round selection in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, Collins played in parts of five NFL seasons between 2016-21.

Other Razorback athletes set to be inducted are former quarterback Matt Jones (2001-04), linebacker Ravin Caldwell (1982-85), baseball pitcher David Walling (1998-99), men’s basketball guard Kareem Reid (1995-99), track and field star Matt Hemingway (1992-96), women’s basketball’s Wendi Willits (1997-2001) and softball’s Devon Wallace (2012-15).

Jones was the Razorbacks’ starter from 2002-04, leading Arkansas to two bowl games. Caldwell helped lead the Razorbacks to 32 wins in four seasons (1982-85) before going on to play for the NFL’s Washington Redskins. He was a member of Washington’s two Super Bowl-winning teams in the 1987-88 and 1991-92 NFL seasons.

Here is a full list of accomplishments of Arkansas’ Class of 2024 Hall of Honor inductees.
