Booze and baseball? Sounds great as Brew Pig Sooie back for Florida series

Uh, yes, please!

If there’s one thing Arkansansans like, it’s alcohol and sports together.

Well, actually, who doesn’t.

Brew Pig Sooie, a beer festival introduced in the fall during Arkansas soccer season, is returning this spring. The tasting event will be held Sunday, April 28 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. presumably at or near Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville, though the press release did not state an exact location.

For $40, attendees get a ticket to the event with access to more than 20 breweries, several of which are local, a five-ounce tasting glass, and a Brew Pig Sooie t-shirt. With the five-ounce glass, attendees get unlimited sample pours.

Arkansas is encouraging fans who attend Brew Pig Sooie to stick around for the Diamond Hogs’ series finale against Florida. Tickets for that game can purchased for $20 in the Hog Pen and both tickets can be purchased together at the link.

SEC Baseball Power Rankings: Week 3-Florida falls, Vandy rises, and LSU stays on top.

Florida falls, Vandy rises, and LSU stays on top in this week’s addition the SEC Power Rankings.

Another week of SEC baseball has passed us by, and the picture is slowly beginning to come together.

There was quite a lot of movement after this week’s games, with most of it coming from the middle of the conference.

Vanderbilt made the biggest jump after going 5-0 with a win over Texas. South Carolina, on the other hand, fell 4 spots after it faced its first test of the season in Clemson.

The top stayed relatively the same. LSU remains No. 1, but Arkansas and Tennessee move a spot as Florida drops from 2 to 4. Texas A&M also moved upwards after becoming the only remaining SEC team without blemish.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State had much better weeks, combining for an 8-1 record and moved up in the rankings. Mizzou, contrarily, was awful, going 1-3 and losing its series to N Kentucky.

Diamond Hogs up two spots to No. 3 in USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

LSU is the only SEC team ranked ahead of the Diamond Hogs, while the league had 10 teams in the top 30.

After a 4-0 week, the Arkansas baseball team is back close to where it started.

The Diamond Hogs jumped two spots to No. 3 in the nation in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll released on Monday. Arkansas leapfrogged Texas Christian, which fell to No. 4, and SEC rival Florida, which dropped to No. 8.

Arkansas beat Grambling by 20 runs last week midweek then swept Murray State in a three-game at Baum-Walker Stadium over the weekend. The Razorbacks are 9-2 and own a resume-building win over No. 6 Oregon State, who they beat two weekends back in Arlington, Texas.

The SEC, per usual, dominated the poll. LSU was ranked second, Texas A&M sixth, Tennessee eighth and Vanderbilt 10th to give the league six teams inside the Top 10. Alabama (13th), Auburn (20th) and South Carolina (21st) also cracked the rankings, while Georgia and Kentucky were de facto No. 27 and No. 30.

Arkansas is back on the diamond Tuesday against Central Arkansas and will host McNeese State for a three-game series on the weekend.

Beyond the Box Score: Improved lead-off hitting led to a more efficient offense

The Diamond Hogs don’t have to be the best batters in the country, they just have to be efficient.

With the 5-3 win yesterday, Arkansas completed the sweep of Murray State.

The midweek game against Grambling State turned out to be a great confidence boost for Arkansas’ batters. They batted an average of .294 versus the Racers, scoring 21 total runs.

Arkansas has struggled with stranding runners, but this weekend, the Hogs only left 19 runners on bases. Compared to last weekend, when they left 31 on bases, 19 is a tremendous step forward.

Yet again, the Razorback bullpen performed amazingly. It’s almost become boring… almost.

Diamond Hog pitchers combined for 13 hits, 5 earned runs, and—in the least surprising stat of the day—50 strikeouts against 100 batters faced. Even more impressive, though, is they did it with 9 total pitchers.

Overall, the Hogs were completely dominant. With less than two weeks to go, Arkansas looks to be in a prime position to start SEC play. Here, we’ll cover some key stats that made their performance so domineering.

Mason Molina money as Diamond Hogs sweep Murray

Mason Molina struck out 10 batters in Arkansas’ series-sweeping win.

Mason Molina is getting after it.

The Texas Tech transfer struck out 10 batters in five innings for No. 5 Arkansas on Sunday, leading the Diamond Hogs to a sweep of Murray State in a 5-3 win.

Molina gave up just one run on two hits and a walk as his lineup picked him up in third and fourth innings, plating two runs in each.

Nolan Souza started the third with a solo shot before Kendall Diggs gave Arkansas the lead on a sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Souza plated two more on a two-run single to give the Razorbacks all the runs they’d need.

Souza was the only Arkansas batter to pick up more than one hit, but every starter had a knock. Once the lead was secure, Will McEntire came on to finish the final 3 2/3 innings, giving up just one more Murray State run in the process.

Arkansas is back in action Tuesday at Baum-Walker Stadium when Central Arkansas visits from Conway for a one-off game at 3 p.m.

The brooms are out. Can the Diamond Hogs sweep?

The Arkansas baseball team will going for a sweep Sunday when the fifth-ranked Razorbacks host Murray State in the finale of their three-game set from Baum-Walker Stadium.

Arkansas took the first and second games while only allowing the Racers to score one run in each. Saturday’s Diamond Hogs win clinched the series and ended in eight innings after a run-rule, 11-1.

Mason Molina is expected to get the call on the hill for Arkansas. The Texas Tech transfer has been dynamite in his two starts with the Razorbacks. He’s pitched 8 1/3 innings and struck out 19 batters. Opponents are hitting just .103 against him.

Coach Dave Van Horn is hoping his bats keep up the good work, too. After struggling in Arlington, Texas, last weekend – the Diamond Hogs still won two of three – Saturday’s game saw the Razorbacks with 20 baserunners.

Outfielder Kendall Diggs appears to be warming, too, which will help. Diggs hit his first home run in the series against Murray State and he’s now second on the team in both slugging and batting average.

If you can’t make it out to Baum-Walker, here’s how to catch the game.

Beyond the Box Score: Fouls, bench points, and DJ Waggner the difference in loss to Kentucky

Kentucky received unexpected help from deep in tonight’s 112-102 loss.

Arkansas exploded for its second-best offensive performance of the year. Unfortunately, it came up just short.

Just 4 days after losing to an 8-20 Vanderbilt team, the Razorbacks went toe-to-toe with No. 16 Kentucky on Saturday. Both teams produced decent leads over the other. Arkansas led by as much as 9, and Kentucky led by 11 at one point. The lead changed 17 times, and there were 12 ties. It was the very definition of “back-and-forth.”

For the 3rd consecutive game, Khalif Battle blew up the stat sheet with a 34-point, 8-rebound, and 2-steal performance, including knocking down 17-18 free throws. Tramon Mark joined in on the fun and scored 23 points with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals.

The Wildcats, however, had 7 of their 10 players that recorded minutes score in the double-digits. Antonio Reeves led Kentucky with 22 points.

In almost every category, Kentucky and Arkansas were very similar, but a few stuck out at first glance. We’ll go examine a few stats that made the difference in today’s game.

Arkansas beats Murray State, will look for sweep Sunday

Diamond Hogs hitters reached base 20 times and pitchers gave up just three knocks.

Saturday at Baum-Walker Stadium, the Arkansas baseball team did what a top-five team in the country should do.

They rolled a lesser opponent.

Arkansas beat Murray State, 11-1, to take the series and will look for a sweep Sunday. Diamond Hogs pitchers gave up just three hits and the team’s hitters reached base 20 times in the eight-inning game.

Ross Lovich had the best day at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs. Jared Sprague-Lott, Ben McLaughlin and Will Edmunson joined him in the two-hit club while McLaughlin upped him by scoring three runs himself.

Most of the damage came in just two innings. Arkansas scored four runs in the fourth inning and tacked on five in the fifth, an inning in which the Diamond Hogs batted around.

It was more than enough for Brady Tygart, who struck out 10 Murray State hitters in his five innings of work. Will McIntire pitched two perfect innings of relief and Cooper Dossett was perfect in the final frame.

Arkansas will go for that sweep at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Arkansas baseball vs. Murray State – Game 2: How to watch, stream, listen

The outing against Grambling State might have been exactly what the doctor ordered.

Arkansas won its series opener against Murray State yesterday with a score of 5-1.

The overwhelming performance of this season’s pitching staff continued to be the story Friday, allowing just 2 hits and a run against the Racers. Murray State’s leadoff batter, Drew Vogel, homered on the second pitch. From then on, Arkansas dominated from the mound.

Hagen Smith was, again, spectacular, striking out 12 batters in 6 innings. True Freshman Gabe Gaeckle closed the last 1 2/3 innings and recorded 5 strikeouts.

Although it wasn’t the most glaring aspect of the game, the Razorbacks did well from the plate. This team does its best when it hits and scores in bunches. They scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning and 2 in the 8th.

However, the best stat for Arkansas’ hitters was leaving just 6 batters stranded on bases, and only 3 in non-scoring innings. The Hogs have struggled with leaving opportunities on the field, so yesterday’s matchup looks like a step in the right direction.

The Diamond Hogs will take on Murray State again today for a chance to clinch the series. Here’s how you can watch/listen:

Arkansas baseball vs. Murray State baseball: How to watch, stream, listen

Arkansas and Murray State are each 6-2 as the Racers visit the No. 5 Razorbacks starting Friday.

The third weekend of the regular season finds the Arkansas baseball settling into Baum-Walker Stadium.

The fifth-ranked Diamond Hogs are playing games No. 2, 3, and 4 of a 12-game homestand against Murray State on the weekend. Arkansas won’t hit the road again for three weeks when it travels to Auburn for the second weekend of SEC play.

Arkansas is coming off a 21-1 shellacking of Grambling on Tuesday, a game that saw the Razorbacks’ chilly bats warm to the tune of 30-plus baserunners. Murray State, though, isn’t Grambling.

The Racers were picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference in the preseason. The MVC isn’t quite as strong in baseball as it is in basketball, generally, but it’s also a league that could conceivably get two teams in the NCAA Tournament with some luck.

Murray State’s start to the year has validated expectations. MSU is 6-2 with two series wins. The team’s only losses came by one run against Southeast Missouri – a team Arkansas often schedules – and two against Louisiana-Monroe.

First pitch Friday from Baum-Walker is scheduled for 3 p.m. with games two and three on Saturday and Sunday. Here’s how you can catch the action.
