Why Chandler Jones deserves to be NFL Defensive Player of the Year

A look at the resume and the other competition from around the league.

The 2019 NFL season is almost drawing to a close which means that it will soon be time for players to be recognized with the annual NFL honors.

The Arizona Cardinals will look to have one of their players receive one of those honors when the award for NFL Defensive Player of the Year is given out. That player is none other than Arizona Cardinals All-Pro linebacker Chandler Jones.

Jones has been a force in the league since the New England Patriots was drafted him with the No. 21 pick from of Syracuse University in 2012. Jones spent the first four seasons with the Patriots before being traded to the Cardinals in 2016 where he would go on to manage double-digit sacks each season with the Cardinals and would become a force on the Cardinals’ front seven.

Chandler Jones currently leads the league in sacks with 19.0 and has a great chance to break Michael Strahan’s single-season of 22.0. Let’s take a deeper look into why Jones should easily be the NFL’s Defensive of the Year.

The Resume

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Chandler Jones has been a force to be reckoned with this year but has not received the national recognition that he has deserved.

As stated earlier, Jones leads the NFL in sacks with 19.0. That total is almost three sacks more than the next defender which is Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquill Barrett who sits at 16.5 sacks on the year. Jones has a realistic shot to obtain the single-season sack record of 22.5 if he gets four sacks in a game against the Los Angeles Rams in the season finale. Jones has reached the four-sack mark twice this year in games against the New York Giants in Week 7 and their Week 16 meeting against the Seattle Seahawks. The star edge-rusher only ended up with 0.5 sacks in their previous Week 12 matchup against Los Angeles but still got to Rams quarterback Jared Goff twice overall.

Chandler Jones also leads the league in forced fumbles with eight. This means that he causes a fumble on almost every two sacks. His combination of finesse and bone-crushing hits have been pivotal in winning the turnover battle.

Offseason priorities for the Cardinals

Arizona has a lot of optimism going into the 2020 offseason – that doesn’t mean they don’t have holes to fill however.

Three weeks ago, things did not look good for the Cardinals heading into the offseason: everyone and everything needed to be replaced is what the fans were feeling. Outside of Kyler Murray, Kliff Kingsbury, and Chandler Jones, nothing was set in stone.

What a difference a couple of games make!

However, despite the recent optimism that comes from winning two games, there are still quite a few holes to fill on this roster in the offseason. Here are a few that stick out:

Re-sign Kenyan Drake

At this point, it would be a huge disappointment if they don’t re-sign Drake. Whether he can re-create his success remains to be seen, but he has earned his next contract after rushing for 583 yards in just 7 games (this translates to over 1300 yards rushing in a full 16 game season for those wondering).

7 Christmas wishes Cardinals fans have

This is what fans hope to get from their team.

It is Christmas Day and that means giving and receiving gifts. For Arizona Cardinals fans, what Christmas wishes do we have for the team?

A win over the Rams

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

The Cardinals take on the Rams on the road in the season finale. They have not beaten the Rams since 2016. They were embarrassed by them a few weeks ago. It would be wonderful to end the season with six wins, a three-game winning streak and wins over the Seahawks and Rams to end the year.

Kliff Kingsbury’s offensive flexibility shouldn’t be surprising

He has had a top running game, a top tight end and top receivers and QBs in the past. Why should that change now?

Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury has done what he was hired to do so far. He has turned around an offensive unit that was one of the historically worst ever and develop a young quarterback.

What has been a bit of a surprise is how he has done it.

After all, when he was hired, even the team highlighted how Kinsgbury’s offenses in college never were outside the top 20 in total offense and never outside the top 15 in passing offense.

Famous for his high-flying, prolific passing attacks while coaching in college, he has turned the Cardinals into a powerful running team. They average more than 200 yards per game in their wins. They are ninth in the league in rushing and second in yards per attempt.

It didn’t happen overnight. He changed his approach from early in the season.

According to Scott Bordow of The Athletic, the Cardinals ran plays with four wide receivers and one running back on 60 percent of their plays in the first four weeks of the season. That has changed dramatically. In the next 11 games, that percentage has dropped to 21.3 percent.

People expected a lot of what he did in the first four weeks, but Kingsbury insisted the offense was not a finished product and that much of what happened was the result of falling behind in games.

He has insisted he would build his offense around what his players do successfully. He has sometimes bristled at people calling his offense the Air Raid or, now with the success in running the football, the Ground Raid.

And the truth is, no one should be surprised to see this flexibility. After all, even though he has made a name for himself for heavy passing attacks, points and lots of receivers, he has done things a number of ways.

He pointed out on Sunday after the game his Texas A&M offense in 2012 led the SEC in rushing. While at Texas Tech, running back DeAndre Washington was a 1,000-yard rusher two consecutive years, something that hadn’t been done at the school since the mid-90s.

And while it is said he doesn’t use tight ends, in 2013, his first year as head coach at Texas Tech, his tight end, Jace Amaro, was tied for seventh in the nation with 106 receptions and 11th in receiving yards with 1,352.

He has had quarterbacks, receivers, tight ends and running backs all put up big numbers.

Why should that change in the NFL?

What Kingsbury is doing is essentially what he did in college. He is finding success no matter the personnel.

Bruce Arians admits Cardinals were going to draft QB Deshaun Watson

They ended up with Haason Reddick when the Texans traded to select him one pick before the Cardinals’ selection.

[jwplayer nHwDPBLw-ThvAeFxT]

The Arizona Cardinals believe they have found their quarterback of the future in Kyler Murray. However, if things had gone the way they wanted them to, they would have already had their franchise quarterback in 2017.

Former Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians, now the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who play the Houston Texans this weekend, told reporters Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson would have been a Cardinal if things went according to plans.

The Texans traded up to select him with the 12th overall pick. The Cardinals had the 13th pick.

“Would have been drafted in the next pick,” said Arians to Tampa Bay media on Tuesday, according to Texans Wire.

The Cardinals ended up with linebacker Haason Reddick, who has been a disappointment.

Arians, when he was still coaching the Cardinals, once said they thought they would land a quarterback that year. Both Patrick Mahomes and Watson were still on the board as the 10th pick of the draft arrived. They liked both players. However, The Kansas City Chiefs traded up to No. 10 to take Mahomes and the Texans went up to No. 12 to land Watson. The Cardinals were left with nobody.

Carson Palmer and Bruce Arians retired after 2017. Then the Cardinals drafted Josh Rosen and went 3-13 and got the top pick in the 2019 draft, traded Rosen and drafted Murray.

It appears things have worked out now but it came at the expense of a couple of years of being competitive.

Todd McShay’s mock draft has Cardinals landing Kyler Murray’s former teammate

Could the Cardinals find their next big-time receiver in the 2020 draft and reunite Kyler Murray with a teammate?

The NFL draft is still months away, but with many NFL teams eliminated from playoff contention, they must look to the future. That means it is draft season.

To kick off draft season, ESPN’s Todd McShay has released his first mock draft and he has the Arizona Cardinals selecting a player that many fans will get excited about.

Currently with the sixth pick in the draft, McShay has them taking Oklahoma receiver CeeDee Lamb.

The Cards got their quarterback last April, but they really need to find Kyler Murray some help in the offense, especially considering Larry Fitzgerald will be 37 years old next season and isn’t currently signed after this year. So how about Murray’s former Oklahoma teammate? Lamb can create separation and is extremely talented creating after the catch.

One of the Cardinals’ biggest needs in the offseason a big-play receiver. They added four receivers in the last two drafts in Christian Kirk, Andy Isabella, Hakeem Butler and KeeSean Johnson, but Lamb is on another level.

He has length at 6-2. He gets separation. He has the upside to be a dominant No. 1 receiver.

In McShay’s mock draft, Georgia tackle Andrew Thomas is the next pick at No. 7 to the New York Jets.

If both are on the board, who should be the pick?

Cardinals leap forward 10 spots in new USA TODAY power rankings

They move up to no. 18 after snapping their six-game losing streak.

The Arizona Cardinals finally won a game. They snapped a six-game losing streak and defeated the Cleveland Browns 38-24. As a result, they saw a big jump in their status in new power rankings for Week 16.

In USA TODAY’s new power rankings by Nate Davis, the Cardinals moved up 10 spots into the top 20, coming in at No. 18.

This comes after Kenyan Drake dominated against the Browns, rushing for 137 yards and four touchdowns, the most touchdown runs nu a game for the Cardinals since 1993.

Writes Davis:

Remains to be seen if trade for Kenyan Drake ultimately helps anyone other than Kenyan Drake, who’s heading into free agency with full head of steam.

The Cardinals close out the season with road games against the Rams and the Seahawks. The Rams rank 15th this week, while the Seahawks moved into the top five, coming in at No. 3.

This is as high as the Cardinals have been all season. Unless they can sneak a win in the final two, it is probably as high as they will finish.

Cardinals stay in same spot of 2020 draft order after win over Browns

Despite getting a win, their draft status doesn’t change.

The Arizona Cardinals ended their six-game losing streak on Sunday, a 38-24 win over the Cleveland Browns. They improved to 4-9-1 on the season. However, even with the win, it did not change their draft status.

According to the updated 2020 draft order, the Cardinals would still have the sixth overall pick in the draft if the season were to end now.

The top 10 picks would go like this:

  1. Cincinnati Bengals (1-13)
  2. New York Giants (3-11)
  3. Miami Dolphins (3-11)
  4. Washington Redskins (3-11)
  5. Detroit Lions (3-10-1)
  6. Arizona Cardinals (4-9-1)
  7. New York Jets (5-9)
  8. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-9)
  9. Los Angeles Chargers (5-9)
  10. Denver Broncos (5-9)

What sort of player could they land if they ended up with the sixth overall pick?

Here are the last few picks at No. 6 in the draft.

  • The New York Giants selected quarterback Daniel Jones sixth overall this year.
  • The Indianapolis Colts selected guard Quenton Nelson sixth overall in 2018.
  • Safety Jamal Adams was the pick at No. 6 by the New York Jets in 2017.
  • The sixth pick in 2016 was tackle Ronnie Stanley, selected by the Baltimore Ravens.
  • In 2015, defensive lineman Leonard Williams was taken sixth overall by the New York Jets.
  • The Atlanta Falcons drafted tackle Jake Matthews sixth overall in 2014.
  • The Cleveland Browns drafted pass rusher Barkevious Mingo sixth overall in 2013.

This year’s draft will be interesting. Of the five teams ahead of the Cardinals, two already have a quarterback they drafted in the first round in 2019. The Cardinals could be in position to acquire more picks by moving down a little if a quarterback a team wants is still available.

It also looks like it the Cardinals likely will end up with the sixth pick unless something weird happens in the final two games.
