Steelers provide concerning update on Joey Porter Jr. injury

Joey Porter Jr.’s injury may leave the Steelers shorthanded as they face Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs on Christmas Day.

Regarding the injury woes that have haunted the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, when it rains, it pours. Week 16’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens brought yet another setback for the Black and Gold, as starting CB Joey Porter Jr. suffered a calf injury during the contest.

Initially, the injury seemed minor, with the Steelers cornerback managing to return to the Week 16 matchup. However, the true severity of the injury revealed itself shortly afterward.

ESPN’s Brooke Pryor would report that sideline trainers indicated Porter’s knee was injured as well, and this combination with the calf injury was too much for the young cornerback to play on.

HC Mike Tomlin couldn’t ease concerns about Porter’s injury, stating that it is unlikely the Steelers cornerback will recover in time for the Christmas Day matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Porter is arguably the Steelers’ best lockdown corner, and his absence will be deeply felt against three-time Super Bowl-winning QB Patrick Mahomes in Week 17’s matchup between the Steelers and Chiefs on Christmas Day, at 1:00 PM EST.

Steelers injury update: Joey Porter Jr. in trouble for Wednesday’s game

There might not be time for Joey Porter Jr. to get healthy this week.

To add injury to insult, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost starting cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to an ankle injury early in Saturday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Normally this wouldn’t be a panic situation with a full week to recover and be ready to play. Unfortunately, the Steelers have to turn around and play the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas Day which doesn’t give Porter much time to get healthy.

Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on Sunday and didn’t offer much hope that Porter would be able to go against the Chiefs this week.

Fortunately, Tomlin also said that fellow starting cornerback Donte Jackson is trending toward playing this week after missing last week. This would at least give the Steelers one starting cornerback in the lineup if Porter can’t go.

Steelers give optimistic injury update on George Pickens

George Pickens among other injured Steelers are trending toward playing against the Chiefs.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin held his weekly Tuesday press conference on Sunday due to the change in schedule with the Steelers playing the Kansas City Chiefs in a Christmas Day showdown on Wednesday.

A big reason the Steelers struggled on Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens was the absence of wide receiver George Pickens. The passing offense has no punch without Pickens in the lineup. But Tomlin offered an optimistic update about Pickens playing against the Chiefs this week.

According to Tomlin, Pickens, along with several other injured Steelers like safety DeShon Elliott and cornerback Donte Jackson have a real shot of playing this week.

If the Steelers don’t get Pickens back, we can’t see them keeping up with the Chiefs offense. Pickens has missed the last three games and still leads the team in receptions and receiving yards.
