Mike Tomlin said Steelers took ball 1st vs Rams to protect the defense

The Steelers pulled off the upset win over the Rams on Sunday.

Typically when a team wins the toss, they will defer to the second half, the other team takes the football and life moves forward. But when the Pittsburgh Steelers took on the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Pittsburgh chose to take the football after winning the toss.

On Tuesday, head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the curious decision to put his offense on the field. According to Tomlin, it was done to protect his defense was dealing with Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford after 13 days off.

The decision delayed the Steelers defense by only mere moments as the Steelers offense showed off its first-quarter ineptitude with yet another three-and-out.

The Steelers used a huge fourth-quarterback comeback by quarterback Kenny Pickett to pull off a big 24-17 upset win over Los Angeles.

Studs and duds from the Steelers 24-17 win over the Rams

The Steelers won on another up and down performance on Sunday.

I put this list together every week and every week it is more and more confounding as to which Pittsburgh Steelers to put where. In the Steelers 24-17 win over the Los Angeles Rams, there were some guys who played like studs. Mostly. And others who played like duds. A lot of the time.

But finding guys who were either good or bad for an entire game is just about impossible. So when you see this list and you think to yourself, “Hey that guy had some good plays, he’s not a dud” remember this team is all about the Jekyll and Hyde routine when it comes to playing.

Mike Tomlin on the taunting penalties: ‘I’d rather say whoa than sic ‘em’

The Steelers got two taunting penalties at key times on Sunday and were lucky they didn’t cost them the win.

On Sunday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Steelers mounted a successful comeback win over the Los Angeles Rams thanks in part to some huge plays by wide receivers Diontae Johnson and George Pickens. Having said that, both guys also negated two of their own huge plays with completely unnecessary taunting penalties.

Pickens penalty negated a long reception. Johnson’s penalty came after a big play and a penalty by the Rams and forced the team to replay the down. After the game, Tomlin addressed the penalties by saying they must learn and grow from them. He also said, “I’d rather say whoa, than sic ’em.”

If you want to point to a reason why this team can’t play consistent football, it is this mentality. Tomlin doesn’t want to address the tough issues within the team. It’s easy for him to deflect because the team won but this won’t always be the case. We saw the same thing when Antonio Brown used to do what Brown does. When asked he typically dismissed it and indicated he would not address it with him at all. Why? Because he’s a talent.

Let’s hope this doesn’t need to be addressed again at any point in the season where childish moves like these cost the Steelers a game. The fact is this team isn’t good enough to pile on immature play on top of everything else.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin on his team’s resiliency: ‘They cut their eyelids off’

Mike Tomlin says it’s just part of the business of the NFL to have to fight back the way the Steelers have this season.

It feels like it is time to accept that the opportunities for the Pittsburgh Steelers to come out and play a full four quarters of football are going to be few and far between this season. But knowing that, Pittsburgh still found a way on Sunday to overcome an ugly two-and-a-half quarters to come back and beat the Los Angeles Rams on the road.

But for head coach Mike Tomlin, he’s more or less decided it is just part of the business of Steelers football.

“They don’t blink,” Tomlin said. “They cut their eyelids off, and they go at it. Like I told them, it’s not a compliment. It’s required. I’m just acknowledging it.”

It is definitely not a compliment that this team falls behind so often only to have to claw back. And while we can appreciate that the team is able to fight back, it doesn’t mean putting yourself in that position is a good thing.

Now the Steelers head home to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars before a short week and Thursday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers.

Social media reacts to the Steelers upset win over the Rams

Social media is all over the place after the Steelers upset win.

Sunday was a huge day for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team traveled out to Los Angeles and after their usual rope-a-dope through three quarters, Pittsburgh ramped things up and pulled off a 24-17 win to go to 4-2. Here’s what X, the artist formerly known as Twitter had to say about the win.

6 big takeaways from the Steelers upset win over the Rams

The Steelers found the run game and then found a way to pull off yet another late upset win.

On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers found a way to start off miserable, finish strong and beat the Los Angeles Rams 24-17. This team has become a modern version of the cardiac kids with these slow starts and fast finishes but the win moves the Steelers to 4-2 and keeps them only a half-game behind the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North.

Here are six big takeaways from the win.

Steelers 1st quarter futility continues vs the Rams

Right on schedule, the Steelers opening drive stalls against the Rams.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got the football first in Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. Thanks to a swing pass from quarterback Kenny Pickett to running back Najee Harris for eight yards on first down. But a sack and an incompletion later and the Steelers go three-and-out on its opening drive.

This continues the first-drive futility for the Steelers offense. Pittsburgh has run 14 offensive drives in the first quarter this season. And in six games, the Steelers have gone three-and-out on 10 of them.

This is a drive the Steelers had an opportunity to spend days fine-tuning and scripting this opening drive. But thanks to a blown blocking assignment by tight end Connor Heyward on second and short, Pickett gets sacked and on third and long, Pickett takes another huge hit as he overthrows wide receiver George Pickens. Who was well short of the first down if that matters.
