Steelers vs Raiders: 4 keys to victory for the offense

Here’s what the Steelers offense needs to do against the Raiders.

Through two games, the Pittsburgh Steelers offense has been the worst in the NFL. If you thought this offense was going to be a finished product after just a couple of weeks, you are pretty disappointed. If the Steelers want to get things right against the Las Vegas Raiders here are the four keys to victory for the offense.

Who ya got? Steelers vs Raiders

Cast your vote for who wins Steelers vs Raiders.

Sunday Night Football matches up the Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders in a battle of 1-1 teams struggling to find an identity and stay competitive in their very divisions.

For the Steelers, the focus for two weeks has been the futility of the offense but as we’ve talked about, we can’t let the defense off the hook after allowing nearly 800 yards in two games.

Pittsburgh is coming off of a huge 26-22 win over the Cleveland Brown. This was due to an incredible performance by the Steelers defense which included two defensive touchdowns.

Right now the Steelers are 2.5-point underdogs and might not be favored much this season. This isn’t to say the Raiders are a great team, they aren’t. They are coming off a loss to the Buffalo Bills where they got pushed around. This might be an ugly low-scoring game but we are counting on it being close.

Steelers LB Kwon Alexander gets the green dot vs Raiders

Kwon Alexander has proven to be the best ILB on the Steelers roster.

From the moment the Pittsburgh Steelers signed inside linebacker Kwon Alexander, we said he was the best one on the roster. The team gutted out the depth chart and added Elandon Roberts and Cole Holecomb first but Alexander has asserted himself through two games and will be wearing the green dot this weekend against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Alexander talked about the transition:

“It’s been smooth,” Alexander said. I’ve had the dot before. I played Mike linebacker my first four years. It ain’t nothing different. I just get the call and then go out there and do the work.”

Alexander currently leads the team with 17 total tackles. The run defense has been dreadful through two games and at least some of it has been because of communication issues. Giving Alexander the green dot puts the onus on him to help keep the front seven on the same page to help slow down Las Vegas running back Josh Jacobs.

Steelers vs Raiders: 5 players we want to see more of this week

The Steelers need to shuffle the roster this week against the Raiders.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are sitting at 1-1 and both sides of the football have plenty of problems. The offense is near the bottom in nearly every category and the defense is getting gashed, only getting biled out by a few splash plays.

This week the Steelers take on another struggling team in the Las Vegas Raiders and someone has to come out on top. If Pittsburgh wants to come out on top, here are five guys we want to see more of it this week.

Steelers vs Raiders: WR Gunner Olszewski listed as OUT

The Steelers will be minus Gunner Olszewski this week against the Raiders.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday night, they will do it without wide receiver Gunner Olszewski. Olszewski remains in the concussion protocol.

Olszewski was in the lineup filling in for wide receiver Diontae Johnson who went on IR with a hamstring injury. Now look for the Steelers to utilize wide receiver Calvin Austin III as well as the tight ends this week against the Raiders defense.

Another spot where Austin might have an impact is as the team’s kick returner. Olszewski slid into the primary kickoff return specialist when running Anthony McFarland Jr. was injured but now Austin might end up returning all the kickoffs and punts.

All other Steelers who missed all or part of practices this week were a full go. This includes safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi.

For the Raiders, the only player on their game status report is rookie defensive end Tyree Wilson who is listed as questionable.

Steelers vs Raiders: Areas of concern for this week

The Steelers offense is still struggling and the Raiders have some talented players.

This week the Pittsburgh Steelers travel out to Las Vegas for a Sunday night showdown with the Raiders. Pittsburgh currently sits at 1-1 and is hoping to keep the momentum going after beating the Cleveland Browns last week.

Meanwhile, the Raiders are 1-1 and after starting the season with two road games, get their first game of the year at Allegiant Stadium. Both teams are staring up at the rest of their respective divisional teammates and are looking for answers on offense.

The game is basically a pick ‘em and is going to come down to which offense can find a way to crack the code on the opposing defense. Last week was a win for Pittsburgh but it hardly inspired confidence. Here are our big concerns for this week.

Which version of the Pittsburgh Steelers will show up in Vegas?

This game could very well look like it did when the Steelers and Raiders met last Christmas Eve.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders went head-to-head. Midway through the 2022 season, Pittsburgh finally found its grove and finished the last leg with a 7-2 record to pull just above .500 on the year.

When the Raiders sailed into Acrisure last Christmas Eve, the Steelers did not look sharp — a game of all field goals for the Black & Gold until its waning moments. In the battle’s last stand, Pittsburgh came out throwing. Kenny Pickett went 9-of-10 and, with 46 seconds to spare, zipped a pass to George Pickens over the middle of the end zone for a 14-yard score. The game-winning drive, the only time Pittsburgh had a lead, took 2:09 and covered 76 yards.

The defense sealed the deal when the Steelers picked off Derek Carr for the third time that night.

The Week 3 2023 matchup of the 1-1s, this time in enemy territory, could play out much as it did in December. Pickett looked scattered as if the moment was too big for him, and then suddenly, the light came on.

Which version of the Steelers will the Raiders get? The 2022 version that stumbled into a late win or an offense that finally finds its identity and proves to be the improved unit we all expected?

Steelers vs Raiders: 5 Steelers listed on Thursday practice report

Only two Steelers were listed as DNP on Thursday.

The news on Wednesday from Pittsburgh Steelers practice was not great. Eight players were listed as DNP, although some missed just for veteran days off. Nevertheless, with defensive tackle Cam Heyward and wide receiver Diontae Johnson on IR, the team cannot afford more losses as they get ready to head to Las Vegas to take on the Raiders on Sunday Night Football.

Here’s the Steelers Thursday practice report.

Steelers vs Raiders: 8 players miss Wednesday practice

Several Steelers starters sat out Wednesday practice.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got back to work on Wednesday after pulling off a tough win over the Cleveland Browns on Monday night. Pittsburgh now must turn its attention to the Las Vegas Raiders. The Steelers have their first road game of the year this Sunday night and are desperate to keep the momentum going of last week while trying to sort out why the offense is so bad.

Here is how the Wednesday practice report shook out.
