Hawks to host pre-draft workout with Julian Champagnie, others

Champagnie is among the six prospects set to work out with the Hawks on Monday.

St. John’s junior Julian Champagnie is among the prospects set to participate in a pre-draft workout with the Atlanta Hawks on Monday, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

Champagnie, who was named to the All-Big East first team, averaged 19.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, two assists, two steals and 1.1 blocked shots in 31 games. He finished second in scoring in the conference and 35th in the country, overall.

Atlanta enters the pre-draft process with the 16th and 44th picks, respectively. They also hosted workouts on multiple days last week and appear to be ramping up their draft preparation with the combine set to take place May 16-22.

Champagnie is most commonly projected to be a second-round pick. He will also work out with the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets this week and was recently invited to compete in the draft combine May 16-22 from Chicago, Illinois.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.

Paolo Banchero confused for Patrick Mahomes in incredibly awkward F1 interview

The potential No. 1 pick was awkwardly confused for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in an interview at the Miami Grand Prix.

Potential No. 1 pick in the NBA draft Paolo Banchero was among the athletes and celebrities in attendance on Sunday to watch the Miami Grand Prix Formula 1 race.

The event brought out a star-studded crowd with the likes of Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Tom Brady and David Beckham among others on hand. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes also took in the festivities but did not partake in an interview, as one reporter thought.

Sky Sports reporter Martin Brundle took to the grid to interview those celebrities walking around, and ran across a person he thought was Mahomes. As it turned out, though, the subject of the interview was not Mahomes — it was Banchero.

The mix-up made for one incredibly awkward conversation.

Banchero can be seen laughing a bit after the conclusion of the conversation, while Brundle immediately shook it off and seemingly worked to find his next guest. Banchero and Mahomes each had a laugh about it afterward on social media.

Other than playing two different sports, the two athletes are noticeably different in stature with Banchero measuring in at 6-foot-10 and Mahomes at 6-foot-3, which made the confusion even more hilarious. But, with the nature of live TV, mistakes are bound to happen.

The moment certainly proved to be tough to watch but Banchero and Mahomes each made the best of it. Hopefully, that will help limit the embarrassment for Brundle.

Report: Blake Wesley will not play 5-on-5 at draft combine

Wesley, a projected first-round pick, will reportedly attend the combine but will skip the 5-on-5 scrimmages.

Notre Dame freshman Blake Wesley has reportedly earned an invitation to participate in the NBA draft combine, according to Tom Noie of ND Insider.

Wesley, a projected first-round pick, will attend the combine but will apparently not play in 5-on-5 scrimmages. He will instead opt to participate in the individual measurements and other related on-court testing, according to the report.

The combine will run May 16-22 in Chicago, Illinois, and feature representatives from all 30 teams. Teams each year submit a list of the players they would like to see invited, typically those with the highest odds of getting drafted.

Sixty-nine players were invited to the combine last year.

Wesley, who was named to the All-ACC second team, averaged 14.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals in 35 games on 47.1% shooting from the field. He was the only true freshman in the nation to record at least 450 points, 100 rebounds, 75 assists, 50 3s and 39 steals.

Prospects each year often decide to skip certain portions of the combine to better position themselves in the draft. Wesley and his camp likely feel as though he will be better suited to skip the 5-on-5 scrimmages and just focus on the other testing.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.

OVC Player of the Year KJ Williams to transfer from Murray State to LSU

Williams on Thursday committed to play for head coach Matt McMahon next season with LSU.

Murray State transfer KJ Williams on Thursday committed to play for head coach Matt McMahon next season with the LSU Tigers, the program announced.

The news was first reported by Joe Tipton of On3.

Williams was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year after averaging a career-high 18 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 34 games. He helped lead the Racers to the second round of the NCAA Tournament this year before losing to No. 15 seed Saint Peter’s.

The 6-foot-10 forward announced in March that he would declare for the NBA draft while maintaining his collegiate eligibility. He then entered the transfer portal and opted to reunite with McMahon, who was named head coach of the Tigers on March 21.

[mm-video type=video id=01g2abc88k25vd90w718 playlist_id=01f09kz5ecxq9bp57b player_id=01f1jxkahtwnvzepyp image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g2abc88k25vd90w718/01g2abc88k25vd90w718-bdbd0e517d8616d8616c9dffb47be5d0.jpg]

The 22-year-old is not currently projected to be drafted and could elect to return to college. He will have the opportunity to meet with teams and gain feedback on his overall skill set and make a decision prior to the June 1 early-entry withdrawal deadline.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.
