Which offensive positional unit is on top?

Barring any moves in the next week, the Pittsburgh Steelers opening weekend roster is in place. Several players were placed on IR and former Steelers cuts were re-signed to take their places. Just using the players on the roster now, let’s rank the Steelers offensive positional units.

Projecting the Steelers Week 1 starting offense vs the Bills

Who starts on offense against the Bills?

Now that the Pittsburgh Steelers have trimmed down to their final 53-man roster and shuffled some players to account for injuries. In just over a week the Steelers will kick off their regular season on the road against the Buffalo Bills. Let’s take a stab at predicting the Steelers Week One starting lineup.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are slowly putting together their practice squad after the team’s final round of cuts. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Pittsburgh is going to bring back running back Jaylen Samuels and ESPN reporter Brookey Pryor is reporting that wide receiver Nico Bussey will be coming back as well.

These two moves are in addition to the report that Pittsburgh is also bringing back offensive lineman John Leglue.

The Steelers will fill all 16 spots on their practice squad in the coming days and should continue to shuffle their 53-man roster ahead of the season opener against the Buffalo Bills.

Giants claim Steelers LB Quincy Roche off waivers

Pittsburgh let Quincy Roche slip away for no good reason.

[mm-video type=video id=01fef0n6qp8vby4vrmf4 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fef0n6qp8vby4vrmf4/01fef0n6qp8vby4vrmf4-2a03cc35e7a32bce2f96a643d7eb474a.jpg]

According to the NFL transactions wire, former Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher Quincy Roche has been claimed off waivers by the New York Giants.

The Steelers had opted to cut Roche in their final round of cutdowns and instead keep undrafted edge rusher Jamir Jones. There’s no denying Jones had a more productive preseason but you have to wonder if the Steelers were banking on Roche slipping through the cracks and landing back with Pittsburgh on their practice squad.

Pittsburgh selected Roche in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft out of Miami and the pick looked like a steal at the time. However, Pittsburgh took a calculated risk and missed on this one. Instead the Steelers opted to keep an extra inside linebacker when the reality was no one was going to claim a guy like Ulysees Gilbert III off of waivers instead.

The Steelers were rewarded no players off of this initial round of waiver claims.

Final Steelers 53-man roster prediction

Here’s our final shot at predicting the Steelers roster.

Between now and Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers will cut their training camp roster down to 53 for the start of the season. The Steelers announced their first nine cuts on Saturday leaving the roster at 71. Out of those remaining players, here is our prediction for the 53 to make the final roster.

By the end of business on Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers and every NFL franchise must have their rosters trimmed down from 80 to the mandatory 53 ahead of the start of the regular season.

On Saturday, the Steelers announced the first nine players to be released. Here’s the list according to the team:

TE Marcus Baugh

RB Tony Brooks-James

WR Mathew Sexton

WR Anthony Johnson

CB Shakur Brown

CB Lafayette Pitts

S Lamont Wade

DT T.J. Carter

G Malcolm Pridgeon

The only surprise on this list is Sexton who looked like a guy who might be able to stick around on special teams. Then he went and had a dreadful game on Friday against the Carolina Panthers and probably played himself right out of a job. Brown was the big name among the undrafted free agents as many pundits had a draftable grade on the former Michigan State cornerback. However, he struggled throughout the preseason and could be a candidate to bring back on the practice squad.

Steelers DT Cam Heyward checks in at No. 57 on NFL Network Top 100

The first Steeler on the NFL Network’s Top 100 is Cam Heyward.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=none image=https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The NFL Network is doing their ranking of the Top 100 players in the league and the first Pittsburgh Steeler on the list is defensive tackle Cam Heyward.

Heyward might be 32 years old but he seems to get better every season. In 2020 Heyward only got four sacks but it had more to do with the abundance of pass rushers on the roster and less about him.

The Steelers have one of the best defenses in the NFL and Heyward is the undisputed leader. Heyward had made four Pro Bowls and named an All-Pro three times. He has 58 career sacks, most of which come as an interior pass rusher.
