Carolina Panthers add former LSU linebacker Deion Jones to active roster after Shaq Thompson’s injury

Deion Jones was released by the Panthers in August but rejoined the team’s practice squad earlier this month.

Former LSU linebacker Deion Jones has been elevated from the Carolina Panthers practice squad to the 53-man roster following an injury to starter Shaq Thompson.

Thompson suffered a broken leg in the Panthers’ Monday Night Football game against the Saints in Week 2, which will require surgery and likely cause him to miss the remainder of the season.

A former second-round pick, the 2017 Pro Bowler played for the Atlanta Falcons from 2016-22. Jones was traded to the Cleveland Browns midway through last season after he spent the beginning of the year on the Falcons’ injured reserve.

Jones signed with Carolina in July but was cut on Aug. 29 during the preseason. He re-signed to the team’s practice squad on Sept. 11, and now he’ll have a chance to contribute on Sundays.
