The NFL announced the opponents and schedule of the five regular-season game that will be played internationally. The Arizona Cardinals now know when and against whom they will play in Mexico City.
They will “host” a Monday night game at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Nov. 21 at 8:15 p.m. ET. They will face the San Francisco 49ers.
This will be the second time the Cardinals have faced the 49ers in Mexico. The first time was in 2005. The Cardinals, after falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, went on to win 31-14.
Arizona, because they are hosting the next Super Bowl, had to be the home team for one of the league’s international games. They were originally scheduled to play there in 2020 but the pandemic led to its postponement for two seasons.
The Cardinals will have nine home games in 2022 but only eight will be at State Farm Stadium.
They will get prime-time coverage in a divisional game that will likely have playoff implications.
However, one thing that is less than optimal is the fact that the Cardinals are losing home-field advantage in one of their NFC West games.
In terms of intrigue, either of their home games against the Los Angeles Chargers or Kansas City Chiefs would have been perfect. With the Chargers, there is the West Coast connection as the Chargers are a California team, while the Chiefs would have been great because it is Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have already played in Mexico recently.
It will be exciting and it will be later in the season, meaning the Cardinals will have DeAndre Hopkins back from his suspension.
