The current perception is that Tom Brady’s passing abilities and weapons should lead to an onslaught of touchdowns and deep balls.
The 43-year-old was gifted with a sturdy offensive line and deep threats in Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Cameron Brate and even Antonio Brown now. Because of this, he began the first seven weeks throwing 14-of-39 with deep passes going further than 20 yards. Brady had two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 101.2 passer rating in this category.
Over the past four weeks, Brady has been 0-for-19 with the same passes and he’s accrued three interceptions. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 7-4 and they’ve lost close games that would’ve ended differently if Brady sealed the deal.

Looking at the New England Patriots, Cam Newton is 4-of-7 over that time span with 145 yards and a touchdown, via NESN’s Doug Kyed. This was one of Brady’s issues toward the latter part of his Patriots career and it would be problematic if he was still on the team. Newton’s ability to run the ball makes up for some of the team’s flaws, but it’s difficult to believe Brady could keep this depleted offensive unit afloat.
It’s hard to say the Patriots are better off with Newton at this moment, but it holds some truth.
