Cam Akers unlikely to play Sunday vs. Chargers

Fans will have to wait at least an extra week to see Cam Akers debut

The Minnesota Vikings struck a deal to acquire former Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers on Wednesday afternoon. On Friday afternoon, head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke to the media and said he was unlikely to play on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Since we last talked, it’s been a couple of days, we did add
Cam Akers via trade. Excited to add Cam to the roster and throw him in the mix with some of our other running backs. I think, he’s a guy I have some personal history with, some of our other coaches do as well, I know he’s really excited to be here and he’ll work towards potentially being a part of what we do next week, but it’s a little too soon to ask him to go this week, so more than likely, he will be down for the game, but he’s off to a great start here in about a day and a half of work or so.”

It makes a lot of sense for Akers to wait a week to make his Vikings debut. Getting acclimated to his new team and the playbook is a smart idea.

In the same breath, O’Connell emphasized his belief in Alexander Mattison.

“We’re excited about that, really excited still though about Alex Mattison and the purpose he’s had coming out here this week and has really had a good week of preparation and look forward to watch him continue to do his thing.”

The running back room will be one to follow moving forward, but it’s not going to be different this week.
