California struck down the hammer?

College football in 2020 will get weird and will very much likely not be conventional and the latest maneuver came from the California State system which stated that most classes will be held virtually with just a few exceptions.

The NCAA has already come out and recommended that students need to be on campus for fall sports. So, if these Cal State schools aren’t on-campus there will be no sports.

There are three Mountain West schools that are in that system are Fresno State, San Diego State, and San Jose State.

Here is part of the statement regarding schools for the Cal State System.

“Consequently, our planning approach will result in CSU courses primarily being delivered virtually for the fall 2020 term, with limited exceptions for in-person teaching, learning and research activities that cannot be delivered virtually, are indispensable to the university’s core mission and can be conducted within rigorous standards of safety and welfare. There will be hybrid approaches and there will be variability across the 23 campuses due to specific context and circumstances.”

There will be some classes in-person but while the nursing classes or hands-on research classes will be enough to satisfy what the NCAA wants with in-person classes for sports to resume.

The three Mountain West schools released a joint-statement, basically saying it is too soon to make a determination.

San Diego State and Fresno State are looking at doing a model of in-class and virtually classes which would allow for sports to continue in the fall.

This will be an interesting development to watch because if these three Mountain West teams can’t play in the fall it would leave the conference with nine teams and drastically change not only the league slate but other teams as well which are to play the Spartans, Aztecs, and Spartans in non-conference play.

Everything will be done to make sure these teams can play football at some point but if they can’t it will be a huge loss financially for these California schools and there will be a ripple effect in the Mountain West and beyond.
