Caleb Williams’ instincts and retention of knowledge set him apart

“There’s nothing like Caleb Williams right now.” — an Oklahoma analyst when talking about Caleb Williams 13 months ago

Caleb Williams has an obvious and electric package of athletic skills and physical traits. Those details naturally make him a top NFL prospect. However, the mental element of the game and Caleb’s ability to process plays and situations are the qualities which make him the favorite to be the top pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Riley Files analyst Kegan Reneau explains:

“You point out the Jim Knowles game (versus Oklahoma State in 2021). There’s a play that happens in the second quarter of that game,” Reneau began. “It’s the first or second quarter where Oklahoma runs wide cross, but the outside receiver is running a vertical route. He is just running a straight streak down the field. Caleb misses it.

“Later, there’s 2:20 left in the game. In the fourth quarter, Oklahoma runs the same play. Oklahoma State runs the same defense. And guess what? Caleb Williams remembered that whole shop. The play might be there. ‘I could attack it if possible,’ (he thought). Oklahoma State made a hell of a play on it, but he still remembered it. He still saw it. He still attacked it. You just don’t see 19-year-olds anymore in college football doing that. You don’t even see Bryce Young doing that. You don’t see C.J. Stroud doing that. You don’t, and it’s crazy stuff. I know OU fans are sick and tired of talking about him. You know, they’re mentioning that his production wasn’t as good as Dillon Gabriel’s, but you know, I’m sitting here and telling you, I’ve studied a lot of college football this (2022) offseason. I don’t think there’s another (who’s) better, in terms of what he’s going to become before he’s done playing college football. There’s nothing like Caleb Williams right now.”
