Cal strength and conditioning coach expected to join Steve Sarkisian’s staff at Texas

New Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is bringing in assistant coaches from all over the college football landscape.

Steve Sarkisian’s staff at Texas is quickly coming together.

Although Sarkisian will be coaching in the national championship game on Jan. 11 with Alabama, he’s spending each free moment finalizing his future coaching staff at Texas and forming relationships with current players and recruits.

Each day that passes, it appears a new name reaches the surface with potential of joining Sarkisian’s staff.

A few select assistants from Tom Herman’s staff have a realistic chance of returning under Sarkisian, but it was announced on Monday that Texas would not retain strength and conditioning coach Yancy McKnight.

On Wednesday, Horns247 reported that Cal strength and conditioning coach Torre Becton is the latest to follow Sarkisian to Austin. It’s not much of a surprise considering the two have a history together.

Becton served as Washington’s strength and conditioning coach while Sarkisian led the program from 2011 to 2013. He’s very well respected around the college football landscape and former Cal secondary coach Gerald Alexander praised Becton on social media shortly after the news broke.

The primary coaching vacancy to keep an eye on for Sarkisian will be who he hires as Texas’ defensive coordinator. Will Muschamp reportedly turned the offer down, while Barry Odom is expected to remain at Arkansas.

It was reported by CBS Sports on Tuesday that Mississippi State defensive coordinator Zach Arnett is a candidate for the same position at Texas. Regardless, it appears less and less likely that Chris Ash will return as a part of the Texas staff in any capacity.
