Cade Cunningham to miss Pistons’ preseason opener with ankle injury

Cunningham was listed by the Pistons as out on the injury report after turning his ankle last week in practice.

No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham will not play on Wednesday in the Detroit Pistons’ preseason opener versus the San Antonio Spurs due to a right ankle sprain.

Cunningham was listed by the Pistons as out on the injury report after turning his ankle last week in practice. Casey said on Tuesday that Cunningham still had some fluid on his ankle and has been unable to practice with the team recently.

Casey said the team would be cautious with the injury in an effort to get him fully healed ahead of the season. He said that Cunningham would need to participate in 2-3 practices before gaining clearance to play in order to get him up to speed.

With the Pistons playing it safe, it is possible Cunningham will be ready to make his debut on Monday versus the Memphis Grizzlies. The layover in between games will allow him to continue to rehab his ankle while also going through the needed practices to be cleared.
