Bullpen lifts Diamond Hogs to series win over Alabama

Arkansas is in a tie for first in the SEC West with LSU. Both teams are three games ahead of everyone else.

Ben Bybee started his first SEC game for Arkansas on Sunday. He recorded only two outs before being removed.

It’s easy to think the Diamond Hogs would have lost that game, huh? But instead, the weirdest series of the season capped itself in appropriate fashion as No. 6 Arkansas beat Alabama, 5-4, to take the weekend.

Cody Adcock, Dylan Carter and Gage Wood gave up just five hits for the remaining 8 1/3 innings. Adcock’s performance, as the first guy after Bybee, was especially important in settling things. He struck out three in 3 1/3 innings.

The bats were awfully light for Arkansas, too, as the Razorbacks plated more runs than they had hits. Jared Wegner had three of the team’s nine, including a two-run home run in the fifth that gave his team a 4-3 lead.

Arkansas’ series win is its second straight and lifted the Razorbacks to a tie for first in the SEC West after LSU lost the series finale against Tennessee. The Tigers own the tiebreaker. Both teams are three games ahead of third place.

The Diamond Hogs will host Arkansas State at Baum-Walker Stadium on Tuesday before heading to Oxford for a three-game set with Ole Miss.
