Who can make the roster as a surprise?
It’s going to be a long shot, but the major player on the outside looking in is Antonio Williams. A UDFA from North Carolina, Williams ran sparingly over the past two seasons as a Tar Heel. He rushed 139 times for 826 yards and five touchdowns over the past two seasons in college.
The roster seems to be set at this time with the running back position. However, Williams could be an option for the practice squad. If he shows out on special teams, a unit that the Bills love, he could nudge his way onto the roster conversation. Without an injury to one of the running backs, Williams’ shot at being active during this season is not great.
Another option in case of an injury could be Buffalo testing the free agent market. However, if they have not invited someone into the fold at this point, it would be very surprising for someone to have any sort of a shot at a roster spot later in the process.
Wade, who arrived in Buffalo via the International Player Pathway, took his first touch to the house in the preseason. Training camp will be the time to see how much Wade has acclimated to the American game. If he’s made some major progress, he could force the Bills to make some questions about Yeldon’s spot.
Once again, though, Wade could be another feel-good story who is outside the fringe of the roster.
The lack of team activities due to coronavirus is making is less likely that a player will be able to push their way onto the roster. Anything is possible, though.
