What happens with Dion?
Like Ford, the Bills traded up in the second round for Dawkins, but all the way back in 2017. With that in mind, Dawkins is entering the fourth season of his career. As a non-first rounder, Dawkins is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Is a big pay day en route? It could be, and it appears the Bills will take things through the regular season with Dawkins in regard to inking him to a new deal.
Beane previously expressed an interest in locking up his own guys, such as Dawkins, before next season. But perhaps due to the ongoing pandemic, it’s been harder to do so with so many other things to consider. Since it looks like Dawkins will play into the 2020 season with his contract expiring, his play could push him to a bigger salary or perhaps a slightly smaller once since the NFL is a “what have you done for me lately?” type of league.
Dawkins is worthy of a decent pay day, though. In 2019, Pro Football Focus ranked Dawkins as the 25th best tackle in the NFL, which includes both left and right tackles. Not bad. Then the eye test shows Dawkins’ play only really, truly dipping in 2018, when the Bills’ O-line fell apart all around him.
