Too many bodies?
Is it actually possible that the Bills have too many offensive lineman? That is, too many with talent? Looking at this roster, maybe. And that’s something that’s very rare, and we’ll have to see how that plays out.
We already mentioned the starting line. But the No.2 roles are important. Leading candidates as second-stringers are Daryl Williams, Evan Boehm, Ryan Bates, Trey Adams, and Spencer Long. Most of these guys all have the Beane-Sean McDermott trait: versatility. It’ll come down to play during training camp, but these second-string spots could be huge. We saw that last year when Ford became the full-time starter once Nsekhe went down, and with that in mind, the Bills didn’t stuff many other injuries along the line a year ago. Hopefully they remain just as lucky again.
In addition, do the Bills have any trade candidates here? We’ve seen depth lineman dealt in the past by Buffalo. It could happen again, but maybe the COVID-19 offseason and upcoming training camp makes that difficult. Plus there’s an expanded practice squad, potentially up to 16 players, to consider.
For those wondering about youthful pieces, the name to watch is Adams, who was previously considered an early draft prospect until injuries derailed him. For others such as Ike Boettger, Garrett McGhin, Brandon Walton, Marquel Harrell and Victor Salako, it’ll be a uphill battle.
