The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the 2019 season hoping that former first overall pick Jameis Winston would prove his worth to the franchise and erase any doubt that he was their quarterback of the future (still).
But, things didn’t go exactly as planned. While Winston did throw an NFL-best 5,109 yards to go along with 33 touchdowns, his 30 interceptions were the biggest blemish on his season resume. The Bucs and head coach Bruce Arians decided to see what else was out there this offseason, and lo and behold, Tom Brady is now the team’s quarterback.
Winston may be done in Tampa Bay, but weeks into free agency, the quarterback remains unsigned. Still, Bucs quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen, appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, talked about Winston and his work ethic, making it clear the former Heisman Trophy still has a lot to offer.
Per Christensen (via the Tampa Bay Times):
“[Jameis] works. It was a shock to me. He is humble, he works every bit as hard as Peyton (Manning) and Andrew (Luck) did. I mean he works. This guy overworks, probably over-trains is one of his problems. But I think it’s going to click. Hopefully, he lands exactly in the right place. I trust God he’ll get to the right place.”
Christensen thinks Winston could have a bounce-back performance with a new team, much like Ryan Tannehill did last season with the Tennessee Titans. Winston will eventually land somewhere, but for now, he may have to settle for a backup role.
