Bucs GM Jason Licht gives update on timeline for re-signing Baker Mayfield

Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht updates the contract talks with quarterback Baker Mayfield

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have already locked up two key free agents this offseason, re-signing wide receiver Mike Evans to a two-year contract extension, and keeping safety Antoine Winfield Jr. for at least the 2024 season with the franchise tag.

Now, their attentions have turned to working out a long-term deal with quarterback Baker Mayfield, who is set to hit the open market when free agency opens up this week.

Appearing on the “Rich Eisen Show,” Bucs general manager Jason Licht gave an update on the timeline for getting a new contract extension hammered out to make sure Mayfield remains in Tampa Bay for the foreseeable future:

Mayfield enjoyed a career year for the Bucs last season after signing a cheap one-year deal with Tampa Bay in free agency last year. He earned a Pro Bowl nod, and clearly earned himself a much bigger pay day this time around.

Whether or not that comes from the Bucs still remains to be seen, but both parties have made it clear they’d like to work something out and build on last season’s success.
