Bucs make roster moves after preseason opener

Tampa Bay swaps out quarterback Zack Annexstad for punter Nolan Cooney

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut quarterback Zack Annexstad and signed former Arizona Cardinals punter Nolan Cooney, the team announced Monday.

Annexstad was signed as an undrafted free agent and was the fourth quarterback on Tampa Bay’s depth chart. However, the former Illinois State and Minnesota quarterback had missed all of training camp after he was placed on the non-football injury list on July 23.

Cooney entered the league in 2021, spending the last two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, both on their practice squad and main roster.

According to head coach Todd Bowles, Cooney’s addition was to add another punter for the preseason while expressing disappointment with punter Jake Camarda’s performance against the Bengals on Saturday (via Pewter Report):

Cooney is unlikely to threaten Camarda for the Bucs’ punting job. Camarda has stronger punt yards and net yards per attempt and generally has a stronger leg.
