The Brooklyn Nets have a lot to look forward for the next few seasons as they have standout young players in Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, and Nic Claxton. Brooklyn’s future outside of the players currently on the roster gives them reason for optimism as well.
In a recent article by Bleacher Report, Eric Pincus ranked the Nets as the fifth-best in the NBA in terms of draft assets. For the purposes of the article, Pincus ranked all 30 NBA teams with regards to draft capital from 2024 to 2030.
To get a sense of how well Brooklyn ranks on the list, only the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, and Utah Jazz rank ahead of them. The Nets do not have much of their own draft capital for the near future as they owe their first-round picks in 2024 and 2026 to the Houston Rockets, but they do have some important investment in the future of the Phoenix Suns.
Here’s what Pincus had to say about Brooklyn’s ranking:
“The Brooklyn Nets have a complex set of books with expensive obligations owed to the Rockets for James Harden (two unprotected firsts). But Brooklyn pivoted well when the relationship soured and replenished its draft capital in the Kevin Durant deal with the Phoenix Suns.
Of the team’s five incoming firsts, four are entirely unprotected. They can hold onto those selections and develop over time or cash them out via trade for a star player (Lillard?). The list of seconds is adequate (5-8), but Brooklyn’s list of firsts reflects an overall net positive to give the franchise a top-5 ranking.”
