The Brooklyn Nets are trying to make moves this offseason as they to make their team as competitive as possible for the 2023-24 season and beyond. After recent reports that the Nets were looking to trade some of its wing depth, it looks like Brooklyn’s price on one of its wings is finally known.
According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports, the Nets have discussed trading forward Dorian Finney-Smith with various teams throughout the offseason. Fischer continued by noting that according to his source, Brooklyn wants a draft pick and a player in any trade involving Finney-Smith which shows how important he is to the franchise.
Finney-Smith, 30, is coming off a 2022-23 season in which he averaged 8.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 39.1% from the field and 33.7% from three-point land. Surprisingly, Finney-Smith’s numbers during his 40 games with the Dallas Mavericks last season (9.1 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 1.5 APG, 41.6 FG%, and 35.5 3FG%) were better than his 26 games with the Nets (7.2 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 1.6 APG, 35.1 FG%, and 30.6 3FG%), but the dip in his numbers make sense given the new surroundings he had to play through in Brooklyn.
Finney-Smith played his role as a 3-and-D wing to what was expected of him, but with wing-needy teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, he may be able to command that kind of price on the trade market. It seems that the Nets are being patient knowing that they don’t have to trade Finney-Smith until the demand for him is high enough to essentially create the opportunity for the organization.
