Broncos Wire podcast: Can Denver make a playoff push?

On the latest Broncos Wire podcast, Ryan O’Leary and Jon Heath react to the big Chiefs upset and debate if a playoff push is now feasible.

Following the Denver Broncos’ big upset win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, contending for a playoff spot suddenly appears to be a realistic goal.

To talk about that and much more, I joined host Ryan O’Leary on this week’s Broncos Wire podcast. You can listen to episode No. 92 below:

NFL trade deadline
The streak is OVER!
  • After 16 straight losses to the Chiefs, the Broncos finally knocked off Kansas City thanks in large part to 5 turnovers and a stout defense.
  • Right when I was ready to give up on the Broncos, they’ve sucked me back in again. If not for a 1-point loss to the Raiders and 2-point loss to the Commanders, Denver would be 5-3 and right in the playoff picture.
  • The Broncos honestly have a decent shot of getting back into the playoff hunt. After the Bills, they’ve got the Vikings (without Kirk Cousins), the Browns, the Texans and the Chargers. It’s not over yet!
I need to apologize
  • First, I need to apologize to you, Ryan, for essentially saying the Broncos should tank. You were right. I was wrong. The tank is OFF!
  • Second, I need to apologize to Vance Joseph. Dude! Two weeks ago they held the Chiefs to just 19 points and the only reason they didn’t win was Denver’s inept offense that game. On Sunday the offense showed up and the defense did it again, completely shutting down KC’s defense.
  • Joseph deserves credit. I blasted him when things were going poorly and I need to praise him for getting things back on track.
  • A few notable changes on defense in recent weeks:
  1. Randy Gregory benched, then traded. Frank Clark cut.
  2. Baron Browning returned from PUP and is team’s best OLB.
  3. Slot CB Essang Bassey cut. Ja’Quan McMillian playing GREAT in slot.
  4. Damarri Mathis benched at CB2. Fabian Moreau playing great at CB2.
  5. Players back from injuries: Jewell, Simmons, P.J. Locke.
What’s next?
  • Bye in Week 9 followed by Bills on the road in Week 10.

Ryan and I will return each week during the season to react to every game.
