Denver Broncos general manager John Elway made a big splash on Wednesday when he traded a seventh-round pick to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jurrell Casey.
The pick that Denver traded to Tennessee was No. 237, according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala. The Broncos acquired that pick and cornerback Duke Dawson from the New England Patriots last summer in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.
Here’s an updated look at the team’s order of draft selections after the Casey trade:
Round | Pick | Overall |
1 | 15 | 15 |
2 | 14 | 46 |
3 | 13 | 77 |
3 | 19 | 83 |
3 | 31 | 95 |
4 | 12 | 118 |
5 | 33 | 178 |
6 | 2 | 181 |
7 | 38 | 252 |
7 | 40 | 254 |
Elway has certainly been maximizing the value of the team’s late-round picks. Last year, he traded wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and a fifth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for fourth- and third-round selections in this year’s draft.
Elway used that fourth-round pick from San Francisco to trade for Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback A.J. Bouye. So as a result of the Sanders trade, Denver landed Bouye and an extra pick in the third round.
In exchange for a mere sixth-round pick, Elway ended up landing both Dawson and Casey.
With 10 draft picks remaining, Elway might not be done making trades. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Broncos make a few moves during the weekend of the draft, which is scheduled to be held April 23-25.
