Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at sixth-year inside linebacker Josey Jewell, No. 47.

Before the Broncos: Jewell (6-2, 236 pounds) played college football at Iowa, leading the Big Ten with 136 tackles as a senior in 2017. He started 37-straight games in four seasons, finishing his college career with 433 tackles. Jewell is one of just three players in Hawkeyes history to total more than 115 tackles in three separate seasons.

He was named a first-team All-Big Ten defender in 2017 and won numerous awards as a senior, including the Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year award, the Jack Lambert Trophy and the Lott Trophy. Jewell was named a unanimous All-American in 2017 and he was named the Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year.

Broncos tenure: After his impressive senior season, Jewell was picked by Denver in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL draft. Jewell was a rotational linebacker and fill-in starter through his first two seasons before becoming a full-time starter in 2020, totaling 113 tackles that year. He then missed all but two games in 2021 due to injury. Last season, Jewell was healthy for 13 starts and he totaled 128 tackles, 2.5 sacks and two interceptions in those contests.

Chance to make the 53-man roster: Jewell is a lock to make the team and he is expected to start next to Alex Singleton as one of the team’s top two inside linebackers in 2023.
