Denver Broncos general manager John Elway hasn’t drafted a player from Alabama during his time with the team, which has led to much speculation that he has intentionally ignored prospects from the school.
Elway cleared up that rumor during a conference call with reporters on Monday by pointing out that it’s just a coincidence that he hasn’t landed any Alabama players in previous drafts.
“It just kind of fell that way,” Elway said. “There’s really no reason. I know that obviously we have a great deal of respect for the program down there that Nick Saban has and the football players that they have in their system. It’s just kind of fallen that way. There’s really nothing more than that.
“It just hasn’t worked out. I think to be able to say there’s a reason we haven’t drafted anybody from Alabama — we really don’t have a reason other than the fact it’s just not fallen that way.”
Elway could emphatically prove his point by selecting one of Alabama’s wide receivers on Thursday. Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs are widely considered two of the top three receivers in this year’s class and Denver needs more playmakers at the position.
