We confirmed the contract for the newest head coach at LSU to be 10 years and $95 million. Starting for the 2022 season he will earn $9 million and by the end of the deal, it caps at $10 million for his base salary.

As with any contract for head coaches, they are filled with incentives. He will earn a $500,000 longevity bonus each July according to Ross Dellenger. He will also earn $100,000 for a New Years Six bowl game appearance and the numbers go up from there.

Bonuses

  • Bowl Eligible: $500,000 and
  • New Years Six bowl participant: $100,000 or
  • CFP Semifinal participant: $200,000 or
  • CFP Final participant: $300,000 or
  • CFP National Champion: $500,000

He will get $500,000 just getting to six wins and earning a bowl invite? Dellenger believed it to be a misprint but it has been since confirmed to be a legit part of the contract. Essentially Kelly could earn his $9 million base salary plus another $1.5 million in bonuses right out of the gate.

Not hard to see why he opted to join the Tigers rather than stay in South Bend with the Fighting Irish. Following his opening press conference and the media sessions to follow, Kelly will work to finalize his coaching and support staff. With just two weeks until the early signing period, plenty of work to be done to improve 247Sports’ No. 15 recruiting class.
