Brian Kelly and LSU control their destiny for the SEC West

Alabama’s recent loss has opened the door for LSU, can they take advantage?

Coming off the 6-7 season in 2021 the belief is that 2022 would be a season in which new LSU head coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] would need to reload. While the team did load up on transfers this past offseason, they also added some key pieces in the 2022 transition class.

Both tackle positions have been manned by freshmen and FIU transfer Miles Frazier kicked inside to play right guard. The team also has freshman tight end, Mason Taylor, in the No. 1 spot on their two-deep depth chart. Defensively the most impacted positions were in the secondary with Greg Brooks Jr, Joe Foucha, Mekhi Garner, and Jarrick Bernard-Converse joining the team from other programs.

Even with the loss to Florida State at the beginning of the year, Kelly has the LSU Tigers poised to make some noise in the SEC West. The remaining games on the schedule really set this team up well if they can beat Ole Miss this weekend in Baton Rouge.

The Current SEC West Standings:

  1. Ole Miss 7-0 (3-0)
  2. Alabama 6-1 (3-1)
  3. LSU 5-2 (3-1)
  4. Mississippi State 5-2 (2-2)
  5. Texas A&M 3-3 (1-3)
  6. Arkansas 4-3 (1-3)
  7. Auburn 3-4 (1-3)

After seven weeks of college football in the SEC, the LSU Tigers are tied with Alabama for the No. 2 spot with a 3-1 record in conference play. The undefeated Ole Miss Rebels lead the way. If the season ended today it would be Georgia vs Ole Miss in the SEC title game but we still have five or six games left for each team.

Ole Miss vs LSU on Saturday is a massive game for both teams. The Rebels haven’t won in Baton Rouge since 2008. History is on the side of the Tigers but can they defend the home turf against a top-10 Rebels team? Should LSU win this game, they would be tied with Alabama at the top of the division if the Tide beats Mississippi State.

That would make the game against the Tide on Nov. 5 the biggest of the year. Winning that game would kick LSU into the driver’s seat with three games left on the slate. The Tigers couldn’t afford to lose a game after those two massive games with the top teams in the SEC West. LSU will have Arkansas and Texas A&M left on the SEC schedule.

The loss to Tennessee for Alabama opened the door for the SEC West, mainly Ole Miss and LSU. First things first, the Bayou Bengals need to win against Lane Kiffin and the Rebels to take advantage of a golden opportunity.
